Worksheet Objectives:

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

At Doehrman Company I am currently employed as an installer. As an installer at Doehrman,


I install automotive service equipment like vehicle lifts, air compressors, hose reels, in/above
ground exhaust systems, custom tool boxes, and more. I began this job as an installer in June of
2022 and still continue to do install to this day, so I have an adequate amount of experience in
the field After I graduate from Arizona State University with my bachelor of arts in
organizational leadership: project management, I will be fully prepared to take on a project
manager role and have a team of installers that work under me. The situation at hand at
Doehrman Company is many employees that have been working here for the last twenty to thirty
years do not want to change the way they do work orders, quotes, and other document
management. Western Pump, the organization that bought Doehrman Company in 2021, is much
more keen on new technology. They use a software called Jonas where all work orders,
documents, quotes, labor hours, job numbers, and more are internalized for the company, that
way the companies entire process is kept under one secure software and no papers can get lost or
misplaced. Doehrman was using pen and paper agreements up until 2021 when they were
Acquired by Western Pump. This is unprofessional and holds too much risk in the eyes of
Western Pump. For the last 3 years Western Pump employees have been coming to Doehrman to
teach them how to use Jonas, but the poor attitudes and pushback continues and only half of the
employees use Jonas consistently. Western Pump is getting impatient with the employees
willingness to cooperate at Doehrman and is considering replacing the employees who are
unwilling to change.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

Doehrman Company’s structure was very old school in everything that did. Started by three
brothers and their father in 1978, they had been doing hand shake agreements and misplacing all
of their important paperwork in folders for nearly 46 years. Gary, the former president of

Doehrman, created an environment that was over-forgiving within the organization. In all 46
years of his working there, ne never fired a single employee. He was too much of a people
pleaser, and people took advantage of him for that. Gary made a lot of great relationships
because he was known as the guy who would drop anything to get something done for a friend,
but that is no way to run a business if youre trying to make money and pay your employees. With
this organizational structure that had been going on for many years, Western Pumps acquisition
was a shock to nearly all of the staff.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

I believe that Western Pump is on point with the structure they are trying to put into place at
Doehrman Company. Western Pump is located in San Diego, California. They have been paying
for employees in San Diego to drive to Phoenix, stay here for a week, and train Doehrman
employees on the Jonas software. Three years of this, and many of Doehrman’s long time
employees still have poor attitude and claim they cannot grasp the softwares user-friendly
interface.

After three years of this Western Pump is running out of patience and resorting to firing the
employees who push back and hiring employees who are willing to learn. An alternative course
of action Western Pump can take is getting the Doehrman employees training by Jonas software
professionals, rather than its employees who were hired to do a job, not be a teacher. Getting a
Jonas software expert to help Doehrman employees sounds like a much better option rather than
taking away your employees from what they were hired to do. And from my personal
experience, its very hard to learn something from somebody that doesn’t want to teach.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

I would not do differently from Western Pump. I feel like they put in a lot of time and effort
toward helping the Doehrman employees learn how to use Jonas, but you can’t force somebody
to do something. Jonas is a software the company has spent a lot of money and time on and the
handful of employees unwilling to make the necessary efforts to learn how to use the software
will be replaced. Wetsern Pump has had a lot of success in their history as an organization, so
they know for a fact that Jonas works. Western Pump will have no choice other than to fire
employees at Doehrman and replace them with people who are. Western Pump has a growth
mindset, and its employees should too.
