COURSE DESCRIPTION
This module is designed for the students who have completed Pre-intermediate (B1) module successfully.
The overall goal of this module is to equip students with necessary language skills which are crucial to be
able to follow the academic courses at faculties next year. The module consists of two courses designed for
developing students’ general and some academic English skills. It is a seven-week period aiming to achieve
some selected B1+ learning outcomes (GSE 51-58) by the end of the module. Those who pass the module
do not take the proficiency exam.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
identify key information in an extended text or article and infer meaning based on information in it,
distinguish between the main idea and related ideas in a simple academic text in order to answer
specific questions,
follow an everyday conversation on common topics,
extract key details from a simple academic presentation on a familiar topic,
take effective notes while listening to a simple, straightforward presentation or lecture,
write a simple essay in response to a specific question by using certain techniques to organize
ideas,
express opinions and attitudes on familiar topics using a range of basic expressions and sentences,
give a short, rehearsed talk or presentation on a familiar topic.
MODULE 4
COURSE MATERIALS
The course book used in this module provides an online platform where students can practice everything
they have learnt during classes. The instructor of the class will assign some exercises to be done by a
certain date. This platform provides instant feedback and automatic grading. The performance of the
students to complete these assignments will be evaluated and graded by the class instructor. This grade will
be counted as 15% of in-module grade.
Presentation:
In this module students are supposed to give a short (5 min.) presentation on a familiar topic they choose.
The presentation should be prepared according to the guideline provided by the class instructor. It will be
graded according to the presentation criteria.
MODULE ASSESSMENT:
*Students are required to get at least 60 in the End-of-Module exam. It is a prerequisite for the Overall
Module Grade to be calculated. In short, if the End-of-Module exam score is below 60, students fail directly.
**The minimum overall module grade required to pass the module is 64.5. Students who score below 64.5
cannot pass the related module.
***The SPEAKING PERFORMANCE Grade will be given assessing certain tasks in course books and the
presentation task. These tasks are provided in MODULE 4 Syllabus for teachers.
Regular attendance and active participation are required to achieve course objectives. Students are
supposed to attend 80% of the course (attendance limit: 35 hours) in a timely manner and for the full time
period of the class and participate in class activities. Attendance and participation will be counted as 10% of
in-module grade.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Students are expected to turn in original work. Plagiarism and any form of cheating such as offering or
receiving assistance in the exams, submitting somebody else’s work as your own and copying from the
internet will not be tolerated and will result in failure and/or formal disciplinary proceedings.
