EC2104: Syllabus and Administrative Stuff

Aim of EC2104

A pre-requisite for Level 3000 modules


Idea: Economics discipline is quantitative in nature
Provide the tools for Economics discipline in University
Need a good foundation from JC/ high-school level math

Week 12 => NUS Wellbeing Day (6 April 2023), Good Friday (7 April

Tutors will arrange make-up sessions for affected tutorial


classes
Students affected can attend make-up sessions/ any of the
unaffected tutorial classes
But need to email tutor before and after class to confirm
attendance
Valid reasons for missing tutorial/ makeup tutorials or
lectures

According to University protocol, valid reasons would include points


(1)-(3). Point (4) is added as there can be potential class clashes for
makeup tutorial (ONLY).
University protocol will be adhered to in this module. All other reasons
are not recognised as valid reasons.
1. Absences supported by medical certificates
2. Absence due to participation in sport events or events representing
the University or Singapore
3. Absences due to compassionate reason (e.g. demise of immediate
family members including grandparents, excluding cousins, uncles,
aunts etc), supported by death certificate
4. Class clash (Makeup tutorials only. Proper documentation needed
to be excused)
Assessment

Tutorial, Project and Online Quiz: 30%


Class Participation: 10%
Mini Project (Student presentation Week 13): 10%
Online Quiz: 10%

MidTerm*: 30%
Tentatively in Week 7, during lecture
MCQ + Short answer questions

Final Examination*: 40%

Tutorial (10%)

Two components
1. Attendance (5%)
Tutors will track attendance. Minus 0.5 marks for missing 1
tutorial
Attend all tutorial classes to attend full credit

2. Participation (5%)
Students to present solution to a tutorial problem 3 times to get
full credit (To Update)
Tutors will give more information
Mini Project (10%)

Tutors to allocate students into groups of 4 (+/-). Group allocation will


be made available on Canvas folder ”Mini Project Group”

Instructions to be made available in Week 12. Students have 1 week to


complete.

Submit on the Sunday before Week 13. Present during tutorial in Week
13

Mark Allocation
Creativity (4%): Can you think of an interesting scenario? Do you want
to take the risk of looking at a more challenging problem?
Correct Solution (3%)
Presentation(3%): Are your slides readable? Are you able to explain
clearly? Are you able to engage your audience?
Quiz (10%)
4-5 online quizzes. To submit after allocated time.
On Canvas (-> Quiz)
Starting from Week 3
Not every week. Students will need to check Canvas. Plan
ahead and complete the quiz before the deadline

Each quiz has equal weightage


Able to drop 1 quiz with the lowest grade
Quiz available for 1 week
Will be a timed exercise (about 10-15 minutes) with 1 attempt
only

Missed a quiz? No extension of deadline unless with a valid


reason (e.g. MC for a week)

(Mathematics Tools) EC2104 assumes students have a some


knowledge of
1. Algebra
2. Laws of exponent
3. Differentiation: Chain rule, Product rule, Quotient rule
Use throughout the course
4. Integration: As a reverse of differentiation, simple integration
