Title: Do nuts contain energy?

Aim: To investigate if nuts contain energy and if so, to determine which nut contains the most energy.
Apparatus: thermometer, boiling tube, water, measuring cylinder, peanut, other nuts, timer, mounting
needle, electrical balance, matches and retort stand.
Method: Measure and record the mass of a peanut. Measure the mass of each nut (almond, cashew,
etc.) and trim it, so it is approximately the same mass as the peanut. Stick the peanut onto the pointed end
of the mounted needle. Hold the peanut in a flame until it starts burning. Start the timer. Measure and
record the time it takes for the peanut to burn completely. Repeat this procedure using the different nuts.
For one of the trials, be sure to hold the burning nut beneath a boiling tube of water at room temperature
(initial temperature) until it burns out completely. Record the final temperature of the water. Compare and
analyze the results.

Discussion
Give your introduction on nuts.
State if nuts have energy, give observations or evidence. Compare and analyze your results.
Discuss limitations and improvements of the experiment based on apparatus used.
Conclusion: Summarize your results and answer to your aim in a few sentences.
Marking scheme: MM (Digital scale, thermometer and mounted needle)

 Scale tared to obtain zero balance  Care taken while holding lit nut
 Accurately read the scale stating unit  Accurate measurements of time taken (2
 Read thermometer at eye level marks)
 Ensured that the bulb does not touch  Clean apparatus and area before leaving
container
 Attached boiling tube to retort stand
securely
 Placed mounted needle appropriately
under tube
