The wavelet estimation is one of most crucial step in the

quantitative interpretation. The quality of the wavelet
determine the quality of the well to seismic correlation,
therefore, the seismic inversion results.

The wavelet amplitude spectrum may not have similar

shape to the seismic amplitude spectrum. Especially the
well driven wavelet. The amplitude and phase spectrum are
estimated by solving the time-domain operator which
shapes the well log reflectivity to the seismic trace

This is the key to get the optimum seismic inversion results

Let’s take a look at these two example where we invert the

seismic data into impedance using two different wavelet we
have earlier in seismic section view. The inverted impedance
using statistical wavelet is having similar, in fact lower
amplitude spectrum compared to the seismic. Meanwhile
the inverted impedance using well driven wavelet is having
higher frequency content. This can be observed by higher
detail in the inversion result.

In other words, higher resolution.

The higher resolution is one benefit of performing seismic

inversion, not only easier interpreting layer compared to
boundary, but also having a better detail in the earth
property. Therefore, a better interpretability of the data.

Let’s take a look at these another example below where we

flatten the seismic amplitude spectrum and invert it using
its well driven wavelet.

Boosting the high frequency content is one common

practice to enhance the seismic resolution. In the inversion
result on the right panel, even though we increase the
seismic high frequency content, the inversion result doesn’t
have the higher frequency content as much as the seismic.
This is because the wavelet amplitude and phase spectrum
are estimated by solving for the time-domain operator,
which shapes the well log reflectivity to the seismic trace.

Using this wavelet in the inversion will give approximately

correct reflectivity spectrum, therefore, correct impedance
spectrum.

Now Let’s take a look at those three results together.

The inverted impedance using statistical wavelet, green line

spectrum, is having lower high frequency content
compared to the well data in black line spectrum.

Meanwhile, the inverted impedance using well driven

wavelet, both using original seismic and using enhanced
seismic are having the amplitude spectrum more similar to
the well data compared to the inverted impedance using
statistical wavelet.

From here we can see that the inversion process using well
driven wavelet performed better compared to the inversion
process using statistical wavelet on solving reflectivity,
therefore, the impedance.

So the conclusion is, whatever the seismic amplitude

spectrum looks like, low frequency, flat spectrum, or blued
spectrum, the inversion process using its own well driven
wavelet will try to give the result spectrum similar to the
well data.

Interesting experiment..!

First thing: the statistical wavelet is usually estimated presuming a certain

phase degree, the frequency will be extracted from seismic data (and from
your experiment, i’d infer that the amplitude of the wavelet was also

Interesting topic sir..., just curious do we need to consider the range
of angle stack we deal with when we create the synthetic? is it make
any significant improvement to the correlation?

Anyway...both of you look so familiar for me, have we meet before?

ya, we need to consider the range especially when determining

whether using 2 term or 3 term AVO as the curvature is more
affecting beyond 40 deg.

the well to seismic correlation is usually using near to zero angle, or

not always, reflector represents impedance contrast which could be

from lithology contrast, or combined by fluid content as shown in
red arrow in below pic. as you are getting deeper, you will have less
contrast between shale and gas sand, so you will have dim reflector.
