N 3 MANDAU
A. Backround of study
English is one of foreign languages that are more popular than any other language in the
world. It means that language is humans tool to communicate to each other and their way to
express or say the idea and thingking. In Indonesia, English teaching aims at mastering four
basic skill of language, which include listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill.
Writing is one activity that the students do in almost of their assignment. Through writing
assignment, they can express their ideas, tell stories and give information; they are expected to
be able to make a good writing. Writing skill is considered as difficult thing to learn because it is
more formal and compact. Writing is more complicated for students to master because it needs
long process. It is started from pre writing up to editing and it involves some kinds of writing
skills or abilities. Many adult of native speakers of certain language say that writing is difficult.
It is based on standard from grammar, syntax, structure and vocabulary. (Masjamiah, 2000:25)
Writing represents what we think, it means that the writing process reflects things in
mind. Students find it difficult when they start looking for some reasons to write and produce
sentences. The students have no experience with writing, Students were confused about which
words to choose to make a good paragraph.
SMA N 3 Mandau is one of the schools in Mandau District. It provide to the students.
Especially writing skill. There are some types of genres that the Tenth grade students learn.
Based on syllabus of English Teaching for the Tenth grade of SMA N 3 Mandau. “students will
be able to express the information of genre of text, such us monologue of descriptive text, spoof,
narrative, and recount text (Hasra Widarti:2014)
The writer chose narrative text as the writing material. Narrative text writing is important,
Meyers (2005) states that Narrative is one of the most powerful ways of communicating with
others. A good story let’s the reader response to some event in they life as if it were own. They
not only understand the event, but they can almost feel it. The action, details, and dialogue put
the readers in these seem and make it happen for them.
In this research, the writer focuses on using Example Non Example strategy. The writer
develops narrative text writing material to make the students interest to study English. The writer
developed narrative text writing material appropriate to students’ need which makes the students
easier in understanding the material.
Writing Narrative text actually is not difficult, but many students can not develop their
idea. They don’t know what should they write. Some of students not able to develop detail in
Narrative text although they know steps write Narrative text they know about it but they still
confuse what should they write.
In writing, students need to know the way of how to write well so that they can produce a
good compotion. If students have no good ideas, they will get bored and uninterested in writing
something. The truth is that there are many students that still have low ability at writing. This can
be seen from the observation in the teaching practice in SMAN 3 Mandau. The writing skill of
the students is still far from the expectation of the curriculum. It can be seen by the symtomps :
1. Some of students are not be able to write the good tenses in sentence based on the types
of text. Although they know kind of tenses
2. Some of students are not express their ideas in from Narrative text. Although they know
form Narrative text.
3. Some of students have difficulties to determine the sequence of events in Narrative text
4. Some of students can not use their vocabulary, although they have many vocabulary.

express in the form written using his or her own. In this research, it can be concluded
that writing is a process to represent someone's ideas, feelings, and opinions through
words between writer, reader, and text.
