Reflection for Historical Foundations in Education

Contemporary education, also known as the Modern Age or Modern Period of Education,

was a historical period that lasted from 1500 to 1945. The important features that I discovered in

this topic based on my observations are Renaissance Education (c. 1400-1600), Enlightenment

Education (c. 1600-1800), Industrial Revolution Education (c. 1800-1900), and Modernist

Education (c. 1900-1945). From 1500 to 1945, there were great advances in education all around

the world. In Europe, Renaissance Education was a time of cultural, artistic, and intellectual

renewal. During this period, education was centered on the classics, including Latin and Greek,

as well as philosophy, history, and the arts. The European Enlightenment was a time of scientific

and intellectual advancement. During this period, education emphasized logic, reason, and

empirical observation, and there was a rising emphasis on education for all, rather than just the

elite.

René Descartes made a statement on reason and education that drew my attention. René

Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher and mathematician. He is widely regarded as

the father of modern philosophy, and his ideas had a significant impact on education and other

fields. When Descartes claimed, "reason is supreme," he was promoting the use of logic and

critical thinking in education. Descartes held that reason should be the foundation of knowledge

and that pupils should be taught to think critically and logically. He believed that education should

inspire students to question their assumptions, challenge their existing views, and seek evidence

to back up their claims. I wholeheartedly agree with René Descartes, because reason should be

the foundation of knowledge, and students should be taught to think critically and logically.

Students should be encouraged to question assumptions, challenge current views, and seek

evidence to back up their claims. For me, reason is the cornerstone of knowledge, and students

or anybody else should use reason to evaluate and comprehend the universe in a systematic

manner. Reason can be used to discover truth and certainty. Students could gain accurate and

dependable knowledge about the world by applying logic and critical thinking. Reason is better

than other systems of acquiring knowledge, such as tradition or authority, since it allows people

to evaluate and appraise assertions independently. Students should be taught to think critically

and logically, as well as to question assumptions and challenge current views, and education

should be practical and applicable in everyday life, with a concentration on disciplines such as

mathematics, physics, language, and history. I believe that reason is necessary for learning and

making informed decisions in all parts of life. Education should encourage the development of

reasoning and critical thinking skills in order to enable individuals to navigate the complexities of

the world in an informed and thoughtful way.

Another statement that also drew my attention is the MAGNA CARTA-R.A. 4670. The

"Magna Carta for Public School Teachers" is a Philippine statute that defines the rights and

responsibilities of public-school teachers. The law, also known as Republic Act No. 4670, was

passed in 1966 and is regarded as a watershed moment in Philippine education. The law outlines

public school teachers' rights, including the freedom of expression, association, and assembly, as

well as the right to fair salary, benefits, and working conditions. For me, fair compensation and

rights for teachers are significant, because teaching is a tough and crucial job that involves much

education, training, and competence. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of individuals,

communities, and nations. They are responsible for preparing pupils to be informed, responsible,

and productive members of society. A teacher's job involves a large amount of time, energy, and

effort, and it frequently extends beyond the ordinary school day. It entails a variety of tasks such

as lesson planning, grading, student evaluation, and extracurricular activities. Teachers who are

appropriately compensated are more likely to be content with their professions and motivated to

do well. Fair pay can also assist attract and retain skilled teachers, as well as keep the teaching

profession competitive with other professions. Furthermore, proper compensation can help

teachers lessen their financial burden, which can lead to less stress and a higher quality of life.

When teachers are appropriately compensated, they are able to focus on their core responsibility

of providing high-quality education to their pupils, as well as invest more time and resources in

their professional development, which benefits their students.

Overall, Group 1's topics emphasize the importance of student-centered learning, critical

thinking, and professionalization of the teaching profession. These are critical considerations

when considering education and its role in molding individuals and societies.
