HUMAN HISTOLOGY
LABORATORY ACTIVITY #1: THE MICROSCOPE AND THE CELL
WORKSHEET

Lesson Objectives
At the end of the module, students should be able to:
1. Perform Microscope focusing
2. Identify the different parts of the microscope and the cell
3. Correlate the use of microscope in Histology

PRE-LAB DISCUSSION: THE MICROSCOPE AND THE CELL

The microscope is a simple ocular system that enables the user to view structures and
even organisms that are not seen by the naked eye. In the course of technological advancement,
microscopy developed different techniques and approaches in viewing and focusing important
structures that have been significant to science, and particularly, medical science.

The most utilized type of microscopic technique in the practice of Histology and its abnormal
counterpart, Histopathology, is the brightfield microscope, as it is less costly compared to other
types of microscope yet still effective in viewing important structures that point to important
parts of an organ and in clinical applications, point the user to more accurate diagnosis.

Knowledge of microscopy and its use in Histology will not be effective without the foundation of
its parts and the fundamental knowledge of the cell’s structure and parts and their
corresponding functions.
