The ongoing economic crisis in Pakistan (2022-present).
I have chosen this crisis as it is a major economic crisis that is pertinent to
ongoing crises in Pakistan.
There are a innumerable amount of causes for Pakistan’s current economic
state, included but not limited to-
- Poor governance:
The poor governance in Pakistan can be boiled down to one issue- corruption.
- Low productivity per capita:
Low productivity per capita means a low economic output per individual.
- Excessive external Borrowing
Debt in Pakistan has consistently doubled every 5 years for the last 25 years, going
from 11 Billion USD in 1999, to 220 Billion USD in 2022.
- Recent floods:
The floods were caused by heavier than usual monsoon rains and glaciers melting.
The issues above cause these consequences:
- Poor governance:
Incessant corruption causes unsustainable growth and this can lead to economic crisis.
- Low productivity per capita:
Low productivity per capita leads to reduced total economic output and a decrease in the
countries GDP.
- Excessive external Borrowing:
Excessive external Borrowing causes a Balance of Payments crisis which leads to
inflation.
- Recent Floods:
The losses from the floods stand at an estimated 10-40 Billion USD, which impacted the
economy greatly and was one of the main factors in the current crisis.
To combat the current economic crisis, Pakistan is introducing additional
taxes, cutting spending in their development budget, and hiking its interest
rate.
