Dear Families,
My name is Emma Freels, and I am a middle level education major concentrating in mathematics
at Wilkes University. I am from Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, which is a suburb surrounding
Philadelphia. I grew up in Colonial School District, where I had amazing teachers who inspired
me to become a teacher myself. I have always been interested in teaching math because I want
people to enjoy the subject as much as I do. I understand math is difficult for many students and
has a negative reputation, and I want to show students why math is fun and important. I want to
create a classroom where students are as excited to come to class and learn as I was and still am.
I have always enjoyed working with children because I am part of a big family, where there were
always younger children and babies to look after and play with during family gatherings. As
soon as I was old enough, I began babysitting within my neighborhood and family through
middle and high school. Over the past summer breaks, I worked as a camp counselor and a
childcare worker taking care of eight to eleven-year-old children. While in college, I gained
leadership experience as a first-year student e-mentor, resident assistant, and tutor. I have also
completed field experiences alongside my classes typically in middle school settings. My
greatest strength when working with children is my understanding mindset. I see situations from
others’ perspectives to understand their behaviors and determine how to differentiate my
approach to promote success. In a classroom, this means understanding how to motivate students
as well as never giving up on students by acknowledging that no student is the same.
I am excited to begin student teaching in Ms. Gray’s classroom and plan to put everything I have
learned into action. Recently I have been learning how to make lessons interactive and engaging
so that students have the chance to get out of their seats and participate in hands-on learning. My
goal is to find the balance of making learning fun while still ensuring that learning is taking place
for all students.
Sincerely,
Emma L. Freels
