Networking essay was my most difficult essay. It seems abstract, but its not.

Just state how your

network has helped you. I'd share mine. I'd advise no one copy this. If you do, everyone else will.
So it wont be unique.

It was ordinary, but it was me:

CHEVENING NETWORKING ESSAY

In my career and out of it, I have employed a strong networking skill in sustaining valuable ideas
and projects through the years.

In February 2012, I collaborated with a friend at a local mechanical engineering workshop, to set
up an advocacy platform, where we would write on two sides of a contentious issue, and help our
immediate society decide on what would be beneficial for its progress.

The platform, which we named The Courtroom started out as a debate column, which ran from
just three boards, to virtually all press boards in the University of Ibadan. The column was well
read and followed by the University authorities, and it succeeded in shaping public opinion.

As we ran the project, we saw the need to build a network of writers, who could help translate
the vision to workable solutions. Via our networking skills and succession plan, we contacted
thousands of people in the university and trimmed the numbers down to less than a dozen, and
chose those who showed some promise.

It is about three years since I left the university, that network of writers has continually grown,
with the project doing so well. It has been awarded best column for three years running, and the
writers I have mentored have also been awarded best campus journalists consecutively.

As a public speaker, I have also successfully built a network of speakers, developing an essential
tool in communication. In 2013, I trained three other students from the University of Ibadan to
stand in the National Championship of Public Speaking (NCPS) organised by Toastmasters
International.

We competed with dozens of speakers across the country, and won. I was awarded the best
speaker, as my team was also the best team of the tournament. After the contest, I took the drive
back to the University of Ibadan, and kept building a network of speakers, which led to the
resuscitation of The University of Ibadan Central Literary and Debating Society.

With a blueprint I wrote on building a network of speakers in the university, the society has
become vibrant and organises Jaw War, a platform for debating solutions for Africa.

These networking skills have translated into influencing colleagues in my line of duty.
Networking with Chevening Scholars and will be done with ease.

I enjoy meeting people, sharing ideas and have the capability to interact with a wide variety of
stakeholders. My penchant for working with people has influenced my choices of job. Even
though I have a good background in Chemical Engineering, I chose a business development role
in the Telecoms Industry for two reasons: My love for technology and my desire to meet the
needs of people by providing value while engaging my interpersonal, communication and
business management skills. My eight (8) years work experience in business development roles
shared between Management Consulting and Telecommunications industries has given me the
opportunity to sharpen my networking and communication skills.
Asides my leadership and influence at work, I identify with social and religious organizations
where I have made and keep making contributions. I am part of the leadership of Export Alliance
MCS, a group formed by alumni of Export Management Programme (EMP) course of Lagos
Business School. As a leader in my local church, I work with professionals in several fields to
organize capacity building programs for the youths in the wider church. Presently, I am working
with Google and Livity Africa to put up digital skills training for about 500 youths within our
church population.
I belong to organizations like Young Africa Leaders Initiative, Men of purpose network, and a
host of others. I lend my voice on issues through my write ups on social media and
magazine/newspaper publications. Here is an example https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/climate-
change-required-action-sustainability-part-2-john-igwebuike?trk=prof-post. I believe that I will
be a great asset with the capability to interact and make meaningful contributions to the
Chevening community while leading and influencing others in my profession.
