Universality- In the story “Little Red Riding Hood” a girl goes on a walk through the forest to her
grandmother’s house. On her way, she meets a wolf who appears to be nice. She tell the wolf where
she,s going, which later heads to the downfall of her grandmother. The overall.

The Romeo and Juliet for example.

 Main theme is tension between two groups, while another person would say it’s cause and
effect at rebellious behavior.

Example:

Serenity

When my mind is troubled

You are there to support

When my heart is in pain

You are there to remain

My love you were my sweet serenity

The one who can please me, peacefully

Time goes by, but you never deny

Love is mysterious, but also dangerous

Non-Triviality- In the case of COVID-19, this could be a non-triviality difference

Personal Relevance- Analysis or reading group discourse, also at least to the salience of relating fiction
stories, characters and situations to one’s past and present personal life. For instance, when discussing
looks, reading group members draw extensively on their direct experiences of the period time and
places rendered in the story.

Example: To the movie “me before you” Young and quirky Louisa "Lou" Clark (Emilia Clarke)
moves from one job to the next to help her family make ends meet. Her cheerful attitude is put to the
test when she becomes a caregiver for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a wealthy young banker left paralyzed
from an accident two years earlier. Will's cynical outlook starts to change when Louisa shows him that
life is worth living. As their bond deepens, their lives and hearts change in ways neither one could have
imagined.
Variety- one of the defining feature of literature is its special use of language. In many and short stories,
in drama and especially in verse and poetry, language is itself foregrounded or “made strange’ its style is
different from that of other everyday uses.

Example: In the movie “God’s no dead” Freshman university student Josh Wheaton
attends a philosophy class, where Professor Radisson requires all students to submit a
signed statement staying "God is dead" and never existed. When Josh refuses because of
his own beliefs, the professor challenges him to defend his position, which leads to a series
of confrontational presentations between himself and the professor, with the class as jury.

Interest- engage theorists, literary critics in all fields & philosophies. Addressing issues of aesthetics and
language. Formalist theorist has maintained that the uniqueness of the literary lies in the special nature
of literary language.

Example: The film “black hawk down” takes place in 1993 when the U.S. sent special forces into
Somalia to destabilize the government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population.
Using Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground, an unexpected attack by Somalian
forces brings two of the helicopters down immediately. From there, the U.S. soldiers must struggle to
regain their balance while enduring heavy gunfire.

Economy and suggestive power- literature indeed reflects the society, its good values and its ills. In the
connective function, literature mirrors the ill of the society with a making to society realize its mistakes
and make amends. It also projects the virtues or good values in the society to the people to emulate.

Example: Rand, Ayn, Atlas Shrugged.

This novel has probably done more to get young people enthusiastic about freedom and responsibility
as fostered and protected by the discipline of the free market than any book ever written.
Unfortunately, this enthusiasm is commonly extinguished by the first course in economics. The novel
celebrates the heroism of individuals who mount a crusade against the evils of statist privilege and
plunder and who triumph on the basis of principle, perseverance and competence. As commonly taught,
economics downplays the importance of any individual, pointing to the social benefits achieved by
ordinary people, pursuing mundane objectives by making marginal adjustments to market prices. It is
clearly important to understand how the market can transform the behavior of ordinary people into an
extraordinary pattern of cooperation and accomplishment, but beginning economics could be made
much more appealing to young people, without reducing its intellectual integrity, by doing more to
stress the importance of entrepreneurs and visionaries who have made nonmarginal (“creative
destruction”) contributions to society through their efforts. Such a course would be a fabulous follow up
for the student who has been energized by Atlas Shrugged. Difficulty Level 1: College

Ambiguity- is when the meaning of a word, phase or sentence is uncertain.

Ambiguous words or statement leads to vagueness and confusion, and shape the basis for instance and
unintentional humor

Common examples of Ambiguity

 A good life depends on a liver

Liver may be an organ or simply a living person
 Foreigners are hunting dogs
It is unclear whether dogs were being haunted or foreigners are being spoken of as dogs
 Each of us saw her duck
It is not clear if whether the word “duck” refers to an action of ducking or a duck that is a bird.
 The passerby helps dog bite victim

clear

Examples of Ambiguity in literature

Example #1

“The Catcher in the Rye” J.D. Salinger

“I ran all the way to the main gate, and the I waited a second ‘till I got my breath. I have no
weird, if you want to know the Truth. I quite a heavy smoker, for one thing-that is , I used to be. They
make me cut it out, another thing, I grew six and a half inches last year. That’s also how I practically got
T.B and came out here for all these goddamn check ups and stuffs. I’m pretty healthy though”

 The words “they” and “here’ used by the speaker are ambiguous. But the readers are allowed to
presume from the context that “they” might be the professionals helping out holden and “here”
might be a rehabilitation center.
