Question 1

a) Explain the operation of a step-up double wound transformer.

b) A double wound transformer is used to change a 120 V, 3.0 A current to 2500 V. What:

i) kind of transformer is this?

ii) is the ratio of secondary turns to primary turns?
iii) current would be developed in the secondary coil?

Question 2

An ideal double wound transformer has 5000 turns on its primary winding which is connected
across a 240V AC supply. If the output terminals of the transformer is connected to a computer
adapter rated at 24 V, 15 W
Calculate the:
i) number of turns on the secondary winding.
ii) current in the primary winding.
iii) current in the secondary winding.

Question 3

A transformer is used to change a 120 V, 0.25 A current to 12 V.

i) What kind of transformer is this?
ii) What is the ratio of secondary turns to primary turns?
iii) What current would be developed in the secondary coil?

Question 4

A step-up transformer has 100 turns on the primary coil and 500 turns on the secondary coil. If
this transformer is to produce an output of 4300 V with a 12 mA current, what input current and
voltage are needed?
