An assassination-for-hire scheme backed by the Iranian government to bomb the US Embassy in D.C. targeting the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States was disrupted Tuesday, Oct. 11. Rep. Ted Poe Republican-Texas told Fox News that the plot was, an act of war and an ofcial from the State Department called the situation, a agrant violation of international law. The rst diplomatic shot was red Tuesday afternoon when the State Department imposed sanctions on ve people that were allegedly linked to the plot. Four of those individuals are members of the Islamic special operations Revolutionary Guard Corps, Quds Force. Two of the ve, Gholum Shakuri, a member of the revolutionary guard in Iran, and naturalized US citizen Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, were charged in a New York federal court Tuesday. An FBI agents afdavit released Tuesday alleged that both Shakuri and Arbabsiar were charged with, conspiracy to murder a foreign ofcial, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, said cnn.com While Shakuri still remains at large, Arbabsiar was arrested in September after an undercover informant posed as a Mexican drug cartel associate and gathered information. The same FBI afdavit stated that, Arbabsiar and the undercover informant allegedly discussed using explosives to kill the ambassador and possibly attacking a crowded restaurant. Arbabsiar is alleged to have made a $100,000 down payment toward the informants $1.5 million price for the

In addition to holding these individual conspirators accountable for their alleged role in this plot, the United States is committed to holding Iran accountable for its actions, said US Attorney General, Eric Holder. While in the midst of awaiting further details about the accusations, A spokesperson for Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that the accusations were a fabrication. According to US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, there is much consideration toward taking action to further the isolation of the Iranian regime.

English Club presents Horror Story Contest

The English Club at Radford University is proud to present their fth annual Horror Story Contest. Story submissions are open to all who apply in or outside of the university. Prizes are awarded to the winner, as well as, those who come in close second and third. Stories have ranged from scary to humorous throughout the years. The English club is honored to have RHW Dillard as their contest judge this year. In the past, the English Club judged entries themselves or asked for volunteers from the English department, April Asbury, English Club advisor said. This year marks the rst time we have a guest judge someone off campus which makes the judging more fair and consistent, as well as allowing more people in the club and department to participate. Dillard, born in Roanoke, Virginia, is known widely as a ction writer and screenwriter for the 1965 cult classic Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster. Dillard received his Bachelor of Arts from Roanoke College and his Master of Arts and Ph. D.

Dr. Virginia Burggraf, a highly respected nursing professor of 11 years at Radford University, is well-known for many things other than teaching. Among university students, she is a gerontological nursing professor, but among those who know of her accomplishments, she is a woman with a passion for helping the older population. Her most recent, a $140,000 elder-care research grant, was awarded this year through the Health Resources and Services Administration. Helms tackles duties as new Dean of McConnell

Steven Helms is the new Dean of McConnell Library. Dean Helms summed up his duties into four categories: leadership, advocacy, personnel administration, and budgeting. (My duties are to) provide strong intellectual leadership and articulate a creative vision for McConnell Library, Helms said. Dean Helms added that maintaining continuous improvements and evaluate library services, collections, and technology to ensure that the teaching, learning, and research needs of Radford University community are met. His duties also include fund raising, development, public relations, and ensure compliance with university, state and federal policies and practices. Dean Helms was appointed Dean of McConnell Library after going through a lengthy selection process. First, Dean Helms went through the application process, then through telephone interviews. Afterward, he was invited to RUs campus for a two day interview including: dinner with the search committee, interviews with all library employees, two presentations, lunch with the deans, interview with the Provost, and nally an interview with the search committee. Dean Helms commented, my favorite part of the day was giving my two presentations. The two presentations were What are the major challenges facing universities today, and what are the best ways academic libraries can meet these challenges? and How might we ensure that McConnell Library remains essential to all of its constituents? In these presentation, Helms focused on keeping the cost of higher education in check by outsourcing cataloging and physical processing, strategic planning and budgeting, using open-source soft-
