When asked at the candidate forum in Roanoke about the alignment between public investment in education and the growing needs in the business community, Langrehr suggested higher funding toward community colleges to help provide more specic programs pertaining to particular jobs. Charles Midkiff, president of the Young Democrats, has been working with Don on his campaign for ve years. We really need someone with experience that knows how the education system works in the area quotes Midkiff when relating to alignment with businesses. Midkiff said, Don believes that every American should have the right to have a livable wage and he has been trying to use the education institutions we have at Radford and Virginia Tech to bring manufacturing jobs to the area. Hes trying to help poor people and also he wants to make sure tuition rates remain low for students. He actually really does care about the students here at Radford and the people of the 12th District. Langrehrs participation within the NRV community has already resulted in major road improvements, hundreds of well-paying new jobs, years of stable town budget, advancements in RU students serving as teachers, interns, and reading specialists, and help toward reading on grade level for hundreds of K-12 students. According to Senator Mark Warner, Don Langrehr has consistently proven himself as a strong leader who stands up for his constituents. He has helped create quality, high paying jobs through smart economic incentives. At the campus forum on Tuesday, Oct. 25, Langrehr reiterated his motion toward helping education and jobs in Southwest Virginia. He suggested the ceasing of tuition increases and recommended additional funding toward schools for higher education. He said, Invest in quality to get quality. When asked what specic plans he had in direct affect with college students, he proposed the increase in internship opportunities including rewards that go beyond experience, such as salary and future job holds. Referring to a question about creating blue-collar jobs in the Southwest, Langrehr mentioned bringing jobs over from Northern Virginia. Prosperity doesnt happen by accident, said Langrehr. Bringing green jobs to the Southwest was also discussed at the forum. We must start the transition now,Langrehr said, alternative energy programs should get the same tax breaks as fossil fuels. Langrehr closed the forum saying Im not a puppet, no strings attached except from my heart to yours.
