The Laboratory

INT. OFFICE WORKPLACE – DAY
The sun is shining in from the windows with birds chirping and a warm
breeze blowing through the trees. Peace and serenity hug the city
outside of the building.
AGATHA, the head manager of the finance department of the city
laboratory, looks out of his office window.
AGATHA
Such a warm, sunny day. Ugh, it’s terrible.
AGATHA shuts the blinds and starts walking around the office.
AGATHA
Don’t worry, my lovely little henchmen. And henchwomen! I will shield
ourselves from the ghastly burning star in the sky.
He walks past JOHN sitting at his work desk, who turns and looks into
the camera with a goofy smile.
CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM
John sits in a chair against a wall, facing the camera to record his
confessional style interview. He sits in a relaxed manner.
JOHN
I’ve only been working here in the financing department for a few
months and I can tell you that this is the weirdest workplace I’ve
ever been in.
CUT TO:
INT. OFFICE
As he continues speaking, B-Roll clips taken of the employees during
their daily work routines are voiced over by John.
JOHN (V.O.)
Take my boss, for example. He’s just, kooky.
A series of clips play of AGATHA going around and shutting blinds,
standing behind employees in complete silence until they turn around,
peering around corners to discretely watch them work.
CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM
John sighs and nods.
JOHN
Yeah, interesting guy. But an effective manager! Then there’s
HENRIETTE. Definitely a creepy lady but I learned that pushing her
buttons a little can really make things fun.
CUT TO:
INT. OFFICE
HENRIETTE is standing by the printer waiting for it to print some
documents when John walks up to her casually, hands in his pockets.
JOHN
Ya know, I’ve heard talk around the lab, especially from the
experimenting department, that they think HENRIETTE is a boy’s name.
HENRIETTE
Pfff, typical. You people wouldn’t understand honor and significance
behind names as boring as John.
JOHN
I’m pretty sure HENRIETTE is a derivative of a boy’s name.
HENRIETTE
It’s Victorian… it runs in the family.
JOHN (glances at camera)
Oh! A family name, lemme guess, those earrings are family too?
HENRIETTE
Yes, actually, they belonged to my great, great grandmother.
JOHN
The earrings or the eyes?
HENRIETTE
Both.
When John turns his back and walks away, making eye contact with the
camera, HENRIETTE throws his hands forwards like claws and hisses
quietly.
HENRIETTE (calling out)
I will send my bats onto you!
CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM
John shrugs, throwing his hands up in a defensive manner while
chuckling to himself and the camera.
JOHN
Pretty funny, ay? But I do actually get along with my coworkers. Like
Clarissa!
CUT TO:
INT. OFFICE
John sits at his work desk typing on his computer when a gloomy, all
black wearing, pale woman walks over with a folder in hand.
CLARISSA (monotonously)
I need you to look over this report.
JOHN
Oh, sure! Lemme see here…
He grabs the folder she was holding and flips through the papers,
reading over the information. As he does so, Clarissa stands there
like a statue, staring openly at John.
CLARISSA
You are not very pale, and that color you’re wearing is very bright.
JOHN (hesitantly)
Is that a bad thing?
CLARISSA
No. I was stating facts.
John finishes looking at the report and shuts the folder. He leans
back in his chair and hands her work back to her before pausing. He
tilts his head and squints his eyes as he looks at Clarissa, who looks
at the camera in confusion.
CLARISSA (startled)
What? Are you having a vision and seeing my future? Do I get cursed or
chased by a mad murderer or fall into a giant pit of chocolate and
suffocate?
JOHN
No, no! I just thought I saw you blush. I don’t think I’ve ever seen
anything other than black and white on you.
Clarissa touches her face with her hands, trying to feel for any
unfamiliar warmth or coloration.
Hastily and without finishing their conversation, she runs away from
the desk, leaving John to sit and look into the camera confused.
CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM
Clarissa sits in the same chair where John was previously when having
his confessional recorded. She is holding a mirror and patting her
face with white makeup powder before setting the mirror down.
CLARISSA
I have never experienced such a torturous moment before. Me? Blushing?
She hold her hand to her chest and scoffs, taking a second to inhale.
CLARISSA
I mean, have I taken a liking to John and written him heartfelt poems
that proclaim the fire of passion has melted my cold soul? Maybe…

CUT TO:
INT. OFFICE
A clip plays Clarissa walking by John’s desk when he wasn’t there and
placing a neatly folded note in the middle of it before scurrying
away. John is then seen returning to his seat, opening the note
curiously, his eyes scanning the poem, and smiling to himself. The
camera zooms in on Clarissa watching from around the corner.
CUT TO:
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM
Clarissa stares into the camera with a Kubrick stare.
CLARISSA
If you tell John that I am his secret admirer, I will hire the
horseman to find you.
CUT TO:
Now in the chair sat their boss Agatha, who noticed the actions of
John and Clarissa, as well as Henriette.
AGATHA
Ah, young love. So twisted and lugubrious when they cannot yet be
together. I wonder if our dear employee of the month, HENRIETTE, knows
of their yearning!
CUT TO:
The infamous coworker sits in the interview chair, his hands held in
front of him, splayed and fingertips touching like a villain would
sit. He smirks menacingly at the camera.
HENRIETTE
Little do my coworkers know that I am a vampire from the 15th century
who is destined to be betrothed to the beauty of someone whose name
rhymes with Marissa.
He begins to dramatically cackle like an evil villain before stopping
in an awkward silence.
HENRIETTE
It’s Clarissa, I’m talking about Clarissa if your tiny imbecile brain
couldn’t figure out my master plan.
CUT TO:
The scene cuts away from the interview room and begins playing what is
supposed to be the spooky, gothic theme song, followed by the
participants’ names and the film tiles at the very end when the music
fades out.
