4 Blood detection unit

4.1 Purpose of the module

The Blood detection BD20 is a detection module which can be placed on the Omnia Egg Grader. The
module inspects the egg for the presence of blood in brown as well as in white eggs. If blood eggs are
detected, they can be send to a conveyor assigned for offgrade eggs or for example to the end of the
machine.

Blood detection BD20 17

4.3 Operating principle
The system works by means of spectral analysis. When blood particles are within an egg, a chemical
substance called haemoglobin (the chemical that gives blood the red color) will penetrate the egg liquids
(albumen and yolk). This will result in a diffused presence (dispersion invisible to the human eye) of
haemoglobin throughout the egg. The dispersion will deform the spectrum of light if send trough the egg.
This is detectable by electronics.

4.4 Description of the module

The Blood detection BD20 has 3 functions:
- Begincheck.
- Blood detection.
- Brown detection (option, software licence required).

Fig. 3 - Blood detection unit detail

1- Begincheck LED’s
2- Color detection sensor
3- Blooddetection LED’s
4- Lens
5- Mirror
6- Fibre

Begincheck LED’s
The Begincheck LED’s flashes with each carrier. It is checked whether an egg is in the carrier. A part of the
light is reflected from the shell and is received by a sensor-system that is able to tell the shade of brown of
the shell. This information is used by the algorithm that tells whether an eggs contains blood yes/no for
eliminating influences of brown shells. This information can also be used by the Omnia grading computer if
this is equipped with the optional brown-detection software for sorting eggs on the color of the shell.

Blooddetection LED’s
The Blood detection LED’s flashes only when an egg is in the carrier. The light will enter the egg and either
be absorbed or passes the egg. On the opposite side of the Blooddetection LED’s, a optical system

18 14011470-002-GB Service manual

receives the light that passes trough the egg and analyses the possible spectrum deformation by
haemoglobin. Since the dispersion effect is noticed, traces of blood will influence the spectrum no matter
where the bloodspot is located within the egg. The result of this way of working is that eggs where some
blood traces are fully solved in the egg liquids (invisible to the human eye) can still create this dispersion.

and the calibration wizard.

Blood detection BD20 21

5.2.2 Start to adjust the system
Sequence of calibration and how to setup the system:
1 See paragraph 5.4, ’Height adjustment BD20’ on page 23
2 See paragraph 5.5, ’Run Breakpoint set wizard’ on page 24.
3 See paragraph 5.6, ’Run Calibration wizard’ on page 25.
4 See paragraph 5.7, ’Setup Begincheck threshold’ on page 27.
5 See paragraph 5.8, ’Setup Blood detection level’ on page 29.
6 See paragraph 5.9, ’Setup the White / Brown scanner settings’ on page 33.
7 See paragraph 5.10, ’Check the blood detection performance’ on page 34.

5.3 General breakpoint

The breakpoint value is a moment an action takes place. You have to determine the breakpoints
mentioned in paragraph 5.3.1 before you can use the Blood detection unit.

NOTE
To determine the breakpoints you have to run the Breakpoint wizard. (See paragraph 5.5)

5.3.1 Breakpoints
The distance between two track carriers is 82 mm, this distance is divided into 90 pulses. Each pulse
position (breakpoint) can be linked to an action. E.g. the begincheck LED’s is on another position than the
Blooddetection LED’s, thus the moment of flashing of the begincheck LED’s is different of the moment of
flashing the Blooddetection LED’s etc.
- Begincheck breakpoint
This is the moment the Begincheck LED’s are flashing. This is when the track carrier is exactly in the
middle of the “White light”.
- Flash breakpoint
The data is send for which Orange / Green LED’s need to be flashed.
- Start read Bl Rf breakpoint
This is the moment the Orange / Green LED’s are flashing. This is a fixed value due to the
mechanical distance between the begincheck LED’s and the Blooddetection LED’s.
- Copy from Can
Before the Blooddetection LED’s are flashing the egg information is received from the Omnia Master
Control. This action is called “Copy from Can”.
- Copy to Can
After the Blooddetection LED’s have flashed, all the blood information is collected and returned to
the Omnia Master Control. This action is called “Copy to Can”.

6 Troubleshooting

6.1 General diagnostic overview

The Diagnose page is used to check the hardware.
- Go to Setup - Hardware - Diagnose Info

Fig. 19 - Diagnose info

The machine-speed
- The machine-speed is calculated from the frequency of encoder pulses.

Encoder-pulses / track carrier

- The number of encoder pulses between each track carrier. The maximum can fluctuate between 85
and 95. The number is usually above 90.

The actual encoder-value

- This is the encoder-value read from the hardware.
- When the machine is running, the encoder value run from 0 to 90, and start again at 0.
- This number increases very fast so it is hard to see.

Warnings and errors

No IO-card found
- The Blood camera could not make a connection with the internal I/O card.
- Switch off the power of the Blood detection unit, wait a minute and switch on the power.
- Change Blood camera when the I/O card is still not available.
- Switch off the communication with the Omnia Master Control, so you still can grade without the
Blood detection unit.

Machine is starting / stopping

- The Blood camera received a running signal from the Omnia Master Control via CAN, but the
encoder tells the Blood camera the machine is stopped.
- This message is only visible during the start / stop of the machine.
- When the message appears during a running machine, there are two error possibilities:
a. The encoder signal from the main-timing towards the Blood detection unit is corrupted.

Blood detection BD20 35

Machine is running without start signal
- This message only appears when the Blood camera received a machine stop signal from the Omnia
Master Control via CAN, but the encoder tells the Blood camera the machine is running.
- Check if the communication with the Omnia Master Control is active.

Timing error
- Timing error appears when the sequence of actions is not right.
- Run the Breakpoint wizard (See paragraph 5.5) to setup the timing. This error could appear once in
a while.

6.2 Where to check the Hardware
