3. PURPOSE:

The object of this method Statement is to lay down a procedure for carrying out the
confirmatory plate load test on PCC bottom level at Box Culverts to check the SBC after
ground improvement at Br. 34 as per the approved drawing and IS 1888.

PLATE LOAD TEST METHODOLOGY

Base Pressure
Ultimate Kent ledge Load
Bridge Requirement Plate Size Converted
Bearing Test Level (Hyundai 210
No. at Box (mm) Load on Plate
Capacity Excavator)
Structure

27.25
34 109 KN/Sqm 600x600 9.81 Ton PCC Bottom 21.2 Ton
Ton/Sqm

4. Reaction
The reaction shall be obtained as under –
4.1 - Kent ledge load shall be used as the dead weight of Excavator of 21.2 MT.
4.2 - The maximum ultimate load is to confirm 27.25tons/sqm (Br.34). The corresponding
ultimate load required on a plate size of 60 x 60 cm. is 9.81 tons. The thickness of plate shall
be 25mm.
4.3 - The maximum reaction to be made available for the test shall be 9.81 tons (Br.34) i.e.,
1.25 times the required loading. In our case we use 21.2 Ton. Hence it is ok.
4.4 - A typical arrangement for the test setup is shown below. The main purpose is to check
the required load and meeting the testing requirements within the allowable settlements

BY USING EXCAVATOR AS A KENTELAGE

5. Loading of Test Plate

5.1 - A bearing plate – 600 x 600 mm. shall be placed on the founding layer. It shall be
ensured that the plate is leveled on a horizontal plane and centered in the line of approx. CG
of the kentledge.
5.2 - Smooth loading hydraulic jack shall be placed on the plate and a load measuring
proving shall be fixed between the jack and kentledge Centre (refer figure). The pumping unit
of the jack shall be kept away from the testing plate through extending pressure pipes.

CONFIRMATORY PLATE LOAD

TEST AT Br. No. 34 BY M/s. S M Doc. No. ‐

5.3 - For measuring settlement of plate under loading, four dial gauges shall be placed on the
plate with magnetic base attached – one at each corner of plate. The tip of gauges shall be
resting on an independent datum bar.
5.4 - The pressure gauge for load measuring and settlement measuring gauges used shall be
calibrated with traceability to National Standards through unbroken chain of NABL accredited
laboratories. The calibration certificates shall be verified and provided during time of testing.
5.5 - A seating load of 0.07 kg/sq.cm. shall be applied using jack. The measurement applied
load shall be recorded in proving ring. Once the seating load is steady, the initial reading in
dial gauges shall be recorded.
5.6 - The test shall be carried out by applying a series of vertical downward incremental load
with each increment being of 1 kg/cm2 or 20 percent of ultimate load whichever is less. With
load 27.25tons/sqm, required allowable capacity and allowing for water table and factor of
safety, 20 % of ultimate load will be 2.18tons on plate size 600 x 600 mm. The Load
increment shall be as per the Load Chart.
5.7 - The load shall be applied without impact, fluctuation or eccentricity and the load in of
hydraulic jack shall be measured on the proving ring.

6. Settlement
6.1 - Settlement shall be recorded with 4 dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity, each positioned
at diametrically opposite corner of plate piles and shall be held by datum bars.
6.2 - For each load increment, settlements shall be recorded at 1 min. 2.25 min, 4 min, 6.25
min, 9 min, 16 min, 25 min and 1hr to the nearest 0.02 mm. Then next increment shall be
applied, and it will be continued till the required ultimate bearing capacity is reached.

7. Unloading
After the criteria as per settlement is reached, unloading shall be done in same decrements
and recovery in settlements shall be recorded after the readings become stable.

8. Report
Safe bearing capacity shall be estimated as per IS 1888.
