1 Scope
This Technical Supply Specification (TL) defines the requirements for lubricants on electrolytically
produced zinc and zinc alloy systems – Cr(VI)-free – for metric threaded elements with surface pro‐
tection types as per Volkswagen standard VW 13750 and for threaded fasteners made of stainless,
high-alloyed chromium steel.
For limitations to the selection of lubricants, see section 3.4.

2 Designation
Lubricant as per TL 52132

3 Requirements

3.1 Basic requirements

Approval of first supply and changes as per VW 01155.
Process release as per VW 50156.
Avoidance of hazardous substances as per VW 91101.
The lubricant coating must
– reduce the coefficient of friction (total friction coefficient range µtot = 0.09 to 0.15;
see VW 01129) and
– narrow the scatter range
in the threaded connection as compared to untreated threaded elements.
The lubricant coating must be suitable for Cr(VI)-free zinc coatings and must not contain Cr(VI).
For examination purposes (Yes/No statement), the coating must contain an ultraviolet (UV) inhibi‐
tor as an indicator.

3.3 Type
Water-dispersed synthetic polymers (PE suspension) that yield a touch-dry lubricant film/lubricant
layer after application and drying (commercially available products are listed in section 3.2).
NOTE 1: The properties of the products differ in part and must be tested for the respective use
case with respect to the coefficients of friction to be achieved. Particular influences such as fasten‐
ing speeds, mating surfaces, and operational temperatures of the threaded fasteners used must be
taken into consideration.

So, for example, the products from section 3.2 Table 1 are particularly suited for coating electrolyti‐
cally zinc-coated threaded fasteners. The products from section 3.2 Table 2 are preferred for stain‐
less steel threaded fasteners; the effect of reducing the coefficient of friction is particularly strong
here.
Lubricants from section 3.2 Table 3 can be used for metric thread-forming tapping screws, in order
to fulfill the specifications regarding the maximum screw-in torques as per VW 60424.
As an alternative to re-lubrication, products containing solvents (sprays) from section 3.2 Table 4
can also be used for stainless steel threaded fasteners, while observing the limitations on electro‐
plated coatings mentioned in Note 3.
The coating agent must be silicone-free and must not contain any substances necessitating a
marking as being hazardous to health (Xn) as per the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance.

3.4 Requirements for the lubricant application process

– It must be ensured that no residues of chromic acid, chromic solutions, or other acid residues
can enter into the lubricant coating bath.
– The chosen process must guarantee reliable and even wetting of the surface with lubricant.
Prior to application of the lubricant, the parts to be coated must be dry and slightly heated (ob‐
ject temperature approx. 40 °C to 50 °C, not exceeding 75 °C). The temperature of the coating
agent must not fall below 20 °C during coating (optimum: 25 °C to 35 °C, not exceed‐
ing 45 °C).
– The coating agent is usually supplied as a concentrate. The mixing ratio of coating agent con‐
centrate and, preferably, demineralized water must be chosen in such a way as to achieve and
maintain the desired coefficients of friction. Empirical reference value: 1 part coating agent,
3 parts water (e.g., for microGLEIT DF 911, gleitmo 605, Torque'N'Tension 11, or Tor‐
que'N'Tension Control Fluid (Blue/Green/Clear UV).
– The bath concentration must be tested by determining the dry residue or using a refractome‐
ter, and documented.
Page 4
TL 52132: 2014-08

– The bath (pH value) must be checked based on the specifications of the coating agent manu‐
facturer (frequency: at least once per shift/day, taking into account the specified limits).
– Coated threaded parts are preferably dried in a tunnel-type system, but a centrifugal system is
also possible. Drying must be performed at a speed suited to the parts spectrum and with the
application of heat. The precise setting parameters (rotational speed, temperature, filling quan‐
tity) must be determined and documented by the coating company in collaboration with the
coating agent manufacturer. The maximum permissible temperature for the coating system
must be observed, e.g., max. 90 °C for Cr(VI)-free passivation treatments.
– In order to avoid the risk of condensation, the parts must be packaged dry and only after
reaching ambient (room) temperature.
– Check the efficiency of the lubricant coating with respect to the coefficients of friction of the
threaded elements in coordination with the receiving plant.
NOTE 2: If threaded fasteners that have already been coated with lubricant are coated once
again, this can yield different coefficients of friction than for the first coating.
NOTE 3: The reason for re-lubricating with microGLEIT DF 977S (spray) could be components
that cannot be coated as per section 3.4, or cannot be not coated in a reliable process, but this
also includes any rework on improperly lubricated components that do not achieve the required co‐
efficients of friction as per VW 01129. Prerequisite for the use of sprays is a release based on the
respective use case by means of a deviation permit (AWE), because they contain substances that
impair the paint wetting ability.
The parts to be coated must be free of oil and grease, and the solvent of the spray must be evapo‐
rated before further processing. Cleanliness, avoidance of contaminants, uniform wetting, and ef‐
fectiveness of the lubricant coating must also be observed. The processes of pre-heating and dry‐
ing are omitted in this procedure.
