Testing of Resistance to Environmental Cycle Test 2005
Konzernnorm
Descriptors: environmental cycle test, IR radiator, climatic chamber

Changes
The following changes have been made as compared to the June 1983 issue:
- Division of the test into two variants, A and B

Previous Issues
First issue: 1983-06

1 Scope
This test specification is used in sample and series monitoring tests for quality testing of vehicle
parts, in particular Group parts, in the environmental cycle test both in unused condition as well as
after component-specific pre-aging.
The behavior of the parts during environmental cycle stressing shall be assessed here (e.g. sus-
ceptibility to cracks, deformation, separation of the composite material, etc.).
PV 2005, Variant A single parts
PV 2005, Variant B complete vehicle, with IR radiator support

2 Requirements
For additional requirements see the TL and/or drawing.

3 Designation
Examples:
- Free of cracks after 100 cycles of climatic aging in an environmental cycle test acc. to PV
2005-A without pre-aging
- No deformation after 50 cycles of climatic aging in an environmental cycle test acc. to PV 2005-
B with pre-aging.

4 Test Procedure

4.1 Testing
The parts to be tested (as a single part or an ASSY) or the vehicle are placed in the prepared cli-
matic chamber and assessed after the required number of cycles.

4.1.1 Aging
According to technical supply specification or drawing (drawing entries take precedence).

4.1.2 Climatic Aging

Number of cycles according to technical supply specification or drawing (drawing entries take
precedence).
The holding times must always be maintained. The cooling-off and heating-up phases can be var-
ied according to the performance capability of the climatic chambers used, even if this extends the
cycle duration specified for both variants by max. 1/3. Deviations shall be specified in the test re-
port. The humidity must not be controlled in the cold phases (temperature < 0° C), however it
should not exceed 30 % rel. humidity.
The chambers are loaded in the holding phase at +23° C and 30 % rel. humidity.

4.1.2.1 Variant A (Single Parts)

1 cycle (see also Diagram 1) takes 12 hours and includes the following temperature and climatic
conditions:
- 40 minutes Holding time at +23° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 90 minutes Cooling-off phase from +23 to -35° C at 30 % rel. humidity
- 60 minutes Holding time at -35° C and max. 30 % rel. humidity
- 80 minutes Heating-up phase to +50° C and 80 % rel. humidity
- 120 minutes Holding time at +50° C and 80 % rel. humidity
- 30 minutes Heating-up phase to +80° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 240 minutes Holding time at +80° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 60 minutes Cooling-off phase to +23° C and 30 % rel. humidity
The actual water content of the air must not exceed 95 g/m³ during the phase of heating up to
+80° C, 30 % rel. humidity. At no time during testing of parts from the vehicle interior may the
specimen parts exhibit signs of condensation.

4.1.2.2 Variant B (Complete Vehicle, with IR Radiator Support)

1 cycle (see also Diagram 2) takes 24 hours and includes the following temperature and climatic
conditions:
- 60 minutes Holding time at +23° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 150 minutes Cooling-off phase from +23 to -35° C at 30 % rel. humidity
- 120 minutes Holding time at -35° C and max. 30 % rel. humidity
- 150 minutes Heating-up phase to +45° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 180 minutes Moistening phase to +45° C and 95 % rel. humidity
- 240 minutes Holding time at +45° C and 95 % rel. humidity
- 30 minutes Drying phase to +42° C and 30 % rel. humidity
- 450 minutes Holding time at +42° C and 30 % rel. humidity

The holding phase at +23° C and 30 % rel. humidity can be used for loading the chambers or car-
rying out servicing work.
The vehicle shall be irradiated with medium-wave infrared radiators (without radiation in the UV
range ≤ 400 nm) during the heat phase (+42° C, 30 % rel. humidity) such that an outside tem-
perature of +90° C is generated on the roof and in the vicinity of the door upper trims. The maxi-
mum temperatures established for the relevant vehicle type during open air weathering must be set
for the following components / areas in the passenger compartment:
- Dashboard, center top scoop
- Door upper trims
- Rear shelf / load compartment cover
- Headroom
The radiators can be used at a lower power setting during the heating-up phase and the moisten-
ing phase (-35 to +45° C; 30 to 95 % rel. humidity) to evenly heat the vehicle and the chambers.
