1 Scope
This standard provides notes on the use of the company designation and the „Volkswagen“ Group
wordmark. It also provides an overview of the markings used for vehicle parts.

2 Company designation, wordmark

2.1 Company designation

Company designations, such as „Volkswagen AG“, are registered and legally protected company
identifiers.
In general, they identify factories, services, objects, information, memos, etc., as belonging to a
certain company.

2.2 Wordmark of the Volkswagen Group – „Volkswagen“

The „Volkswagen“ wordmark is the exclusive wordmark of the Group. This identifier is a registered
trademark of Volkswagen AG and legally protected as such. It identifies products and services

produced by Volkswagen AG as such. In addition, it aims to symbolize both the unobtrusive self-
image and the international importance of Volkswagen AG.
Information on the valid version of the corporate design of the Volkswagen Group is provided in the
Group-specific guidelines.

3 Overview of markings for vehicle parts

3.1 Logos – Volkswagen standard VW 10514

Logos in accordance with this standard are used to identify original parts and to exclude unjustified
claims in the event of product liability claims.

3.2 Country of origin – VW 10550

The "country of origin" marking (currently also manufacturer's name) must adhere to existing laws
and customs regulations.

3.3 Manufacturer's code – VW 10540-1, VW 10540-7

The manufacturer's code marking is used for traceability back to the production location.

3.4 Part number (drawing number) – VW 01098

Marking a vehicle part with the part number links this part to the drawing and makes it is easier to
locate parts in the spare-parts storage facilities and repair shops. The part number must be applied
to the component as per the example and figure 1.

3.5 Date marking – VW 10560

The date marking is required to meet official requirements, to sort parts according to their start
date, and to ensure that the parts can be traced in the case of warranty claims.

3.6 Materials marking – VDA 260

All plastic vehicle components (including textiles) must be marked as per German Association of
the Automotive Industry (VDA) publication VDA 260.

If an assembly (ASSY) comprises parts that are permanently attached to one another – such as a
seat, a door trim panel, or a dashboard – and the materials markings of these individual parts are
no longer visible after installation, then the ASSY must be marked with the material specifications
of these individual parts.
Vehicle components made from different materials must be marked; see VDA 260.

4 Requirements
All vehicle parts that are from third-party and in-house component production and are production
parts, genuine parts, or accessories of the Volkswagen Group and its brands must be marked us-
ing the types of marking specified in section 3. The marking must be designed to be durable and
legible throughout the duration of the part's service life. Parts must be marked using suitable man-
ufacturing methods (e.g., embossing, etching, electrical discharge machining). Downstream work
processes must not degrade the legibility of the marking. The markings must not be applied to
functional surfaces of vehicle parts. The marking types must be applied together in one position on
the component. The position of the marking types must always be defined in the drawing.
NOTE 1: Preferably, the marking must be applied by incorporating it into the manufacturing tool.
The marking must be defined in drawings, as described in VW 01058, using the text macro NO-E2
as per VW 01014, and in Performance Specifications.
Figure 2 shows the text macro for parts marking, see VW 01014 (NO-E2) which must be applied to
all drawings.
Figure 3 shows the required marking types (drawing entry) using examples of defined logos,
sizes, font sizes, typefaces (referred to as shape fonts in the figures), type, and materials.
Additionally, the explanations are provided in brackets. These explanations are not part of the
drawing entry.
Figure 4 shows the generally required marking types as they must be applied to the component,
using examples of defined logos, sizes, font sizes, typefaces, type, and materials.
The marking must be applied to an appropriate location where the quality and appearance of the
product is not negatively affected. Markings must not be applied to functional surfaces.
Vehicle parts from third-party manufacturers and from in-house component production, as well as
Volkswagen Group production parts, genuine parts, and accessory parts sold exclusively as AS-
SYs, have to be marked only once. If the parts of an ASSY are also sold individually, then these
parts must also be marked.
For vehicle components/vehicle assembly kits that are available on the accessories market
and that have their own part number or a new part number, these new part numbers do not
necessarily have to be applied to the vehicle component. In such cases, marking on the
packaging is also suitable.
It is permissible to omit a marking only if
– It is technically impossible to apply (e.g., the part is too small)
– It would negatively affect the road safety and operational safety of the vehicle
– Carry-over parts (COPs) from Group brands, which are marketed by Volkswagen Zubehör
with a VWZ part number on the packaging (the previous marking of production parts is main-
tained in this case)

If there is not enough space on the part to apply all the markings, the following order of priority
must be observed (1 = highest priority level). On the drawings, the markings that are not to be add-
ed must be struck out, starting from the bottom (see example figure 5). Limited marking on the
component; for example see figure 6.
1. Logo as per VW 10514
2. Country of origin as per VW 10550
3. Manufacturer's code as per VW 10540-1, VW 10540-7
Irrespective of this order of priority, it must be ensured that for components subject to
obligatory marking as per VW 10511, the manufacturer's code as per VW 10540-1 must
not be omitted.
4. Part number in typeface DIN 1451-4 - H
5. Date marking as per VW 10560
6. Material code as per VDA 260.
Irrespective of this order of priority, it must be ensured that polymer components
> 100 g and elastomer components > 200 g are marked with a material code as per
VDA 260.

5 Further types of markings

5.1 Marking required by law or authorities

All legal regulations/requirements for the marking of vehicle parts must be observed and do not
therefore need to be listed separately in this standard.

5.1.1 China Compulsory Certification (CCC) marking

Vehicle parts intended for the Chinese market that require the CCC or CCC Self-Declaration must
be marked with the appropriate symbol (for an example, see figure 7).
Recommended size: The size, type, and position of the CCC marking must be designed before the
tool release, as part of the supplier's responsibility, corresponding to the valid specifications, and
agreed upon with the authorities.
CCC and CCC Self-Declaration are legally required certification and type-approval processes for
the Chinese market. The supplier is responsible for their implementation. Parts that are not proper-
ly certified and marked are not permitted to be introduced into the People's Republic of China. The
CCC-marked component may be used only after consulting with the part owner at the appropriate
Development department. An agreement on the start date must be reached with Homologation.
More information can be taken from VW 10511.
If modules and ASSYs contain parts that are subject to CCC, then these parts must bear the CCC
marking. Section 5.2 „Type-approval name – VW 10511“ must additionally be observed.

5.1.2 UKCA marking

Components to be marketed in Great Britain must meet the requirements as per UKCA (United
Kingdom Conformity Assessed) and marked accordingly; see table 1.
A parallel marking directly next to the UKCA marking is not permitted.
Before being applied, it must be checked whether a marking is required. For required external cer-
tification, e.g., for pyrotechnics, the certificate of the testing office must be available.
If the type or size of the product does not permit application of one or several of the listed mark-
ings, the markings must be applied on the packaging or entered into the enclosed documents.

5.1.3 Marking for electrical and electronic devices1)

Parts which fall under the scope of Directive 2012/19/EU on electrical and electronic equipment
(VW 91102) must be marked with a crossed-out trash can on wheels. The marking must be applied
so it is visible, discernible, and permanent. In addition to this, other applicable national and interna-
tional regulations on the marking of electrical and electronic devices must be applied accordingly.
For a sample marking, see figure 8.

5.1.4 Marking for batteries and accumulators (rechargeable batteries)2)

Manufacturers are obligated to mark batteries and accumulators according to the relevant guide-
lines and laws which are applicable in the market in which the battery or accumulator is sold.
When the batteries or accumulators are first placed on the market as per the requirements of the
Directive 2006/66/EC and the national implementations, they must be marked with a crossed-out
trash can on wheels and capacity information as per Commission Regulation (EU) No. 1103/2010.
The marking must be applied so it is visible, discernible, and permanent. If the limits for mercury,
cadmium, or lead are exceeded, the battery must be marked with the respective chemical symbol
(Hg, Cd, Pb) as per Directive 2006/66/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. For a
sample marking, see figure 9.

5.1.5 European Conformity (CE) marking

Manufacturers are obligated to apply a CE marking3) to products before they are first placed on the
market in the European Economic Area, if this marking is required by one or several applicable EU
Directives (cf. Figure 10). The manufacturer is solely responsible for verifying which directives are
applicable for the respective product. Which directives are applicable depends on the type and
function of the product.
The CE marking must be applied to the product so that it is clearly visible, legible, unambiguous,
and permanent. If the CE marking is increased or reduced in size, the proportions resulting from
the grid shown must be retained (cf. Table 2). A minimum height of 5 mm always applies to the CE
marking.
Depending on the requirements of the applicable compliance evaluation method, the marking may
require attributes, e.g., as per module H the ID of the notified body (cf. Table 2).
As per Directive (EC) No. 765/2008 in connection with Resolution No. 768/2008/EC, the product
must additionally be marked with the name, registered product name/trademark, and the manufac-
turer's contact address and, if required, the importer's address, to ensure traceability (cf. Table 2).
For clear identification, a type, batch, serial, or model number must additionally be applied to the
product.
If the type or size of the product does not permit application of one or several of the listed mark-
ings, the markings must be applied on the packaging or entered into the enclosed documents. The
application of the CE marking to products for which a marking is not explicitly required is not per-
missible.

5.1.6 Marking for packaging (environmental marking)

All types of packaging (also transport packaging in particular) as per EU Packaging Guide-
line 94/62/EC must be marked with the type of material. For this purpose, the alphanumeric codes
(numbers and abbreviations) as per Commission Decision 97/129/EC must be used to define a
marking system for packaging materials.
The voluntary application of the following standards is recommended:
– ISO 14021
– CEN CR 14311
Examples for a „Polypropylene“ marking:

For packaging made out of multiple components that can be separated by hand, each component
must be marked. If this is not possible for technical reasons, all materials specifications are permit-
ted to be applied on the main packaging body.

5.1.7 Manufacturer's marking for emission-related components (ERCs)

Based on existing certification guidelines, the manufacturers of primary systems that are important
for emissions type approval (emission-related components) must be reported in South Korea. This
information must be verifiably indicated on the component and it must match the information in the
drawing. Here, the information must reference the official abbreviation of the manufacturing plant
registered with DUN & BRADSTREET (D-U-N-S number).
Variant 1
– The marking entry in the drawing for the actual manufacturer must be identifiable unambigu-
ously and in plain text for the sample-inspection process.
Variant 2
– The marking entry/requirement in the drawing for the actual manufacturer must be made us-
ing the text macro NO-E3 as per VW 01014; see figure 12 (with the addendum „ERC“).

5.2 Type-approval name – VW 10511

For the components defined in VW 10511, a marking with the type-approval name is required to
ensure that the part marking conforms to the type-approval contents (homologation description
sheet; if applicable, component certificates). The marking entry/requirement in the drawing for the
type-approval name must be made using the text macro NO-E6 as per VW 01014, see figure 13.
Preferably underneath the text macro (VW 01014, NO-E2, see figure 3).

5.3 Marking of vehicle parts subject to build status documentation (BZD) – VW 01064
In addition to the markings described in section 3.1 to section 3.6, vehicle parts or ASSYs whose
data is recorded and long-term archived for each vehicle to ensure traceability must be marked
with a bar code or a 2D code as per VW 01064. For an example of a part marking, see VW 01064.
The marking entry/requirement in the drawing for vehicle parts subject to BZD must be made using
the text macro NO-E9 as per VW 01014; see figure 14. Preferably underneath the text macro
(VW 01014, NO-E2, see figure 3).

5.4 Use of AutoID for unique object marking – VW 01067

As an another option for the marking of parts, VW 01067 describes RFID (Radio Frequency Identi-
fication). This marking type primarily applies to test parts, but it is also used for production parts in
individual cases. For an example of a part marking, see VW 01067. The marking entry/requirement
in the drawing for RFID must be made using the text macro NO-E4 as per VW 01014, see
figure 15. Preferably underneath the text macro (VW 01014, NO-E2, see figure 3).

5.5 Communications media marking

The logos for the communications media marking serve to illustrate the corporate strategy. They
serve as graphic identification symbols for the Group brands and are used on advertising materi-
als, forms, company stationary, packaging, and similar items.
They comply with the fundamental separation within the scope of the multi-brand strategy. Brand
logos are not combined. If the sender consists of several brands, these are combined under the
umbrella of the Volkswagen Group (see section 2.2, Wordmark of the Volkswagen Group).
Notes on the application as well as the respective current version of the corporate design for the
individual logos must be taken from the brand-specific guidelines of the Group brands.

6 Vehicle product names

Product names, e.g., Golf, Sharan, TT, Fabia, Ibiza, are sales designations stipulated by the Mar-
keting department and are registered wordmarks of Volkswagen AG or one of its subsidiaries. The
spelling of these wordmarks must be uniform.
