We like to think that every one of our cover
cars is special, but this month’s is particularly
so. Any Mini built by Vortz Racing Cars is an
exclusive offering, after all. And even though
these machines have a following in Japan,
they’re still rare by Mini standards… and are
positively scarce here in the UK. So, when we heard that the first example
of the Vortz Formula ‘R’ (the company’s model for the 1980s) was
heading to market, having never been registered and with just a few
hundred miles under its wheels, we couldn’t resist taking a closer look.

Mini), enabling the car’s famously
sharp handling to remain intact.
Like all Mini Remastereds, Cowell’s car
was hand-built over hundreds of hours
using a brand new strengthened and
de-seamed BMH bodyshell that was
luxuriously equipped inside and out –
and he became a big fan: “I have to say,
of all the cars I’ve ever had in my life,
this is my favourite… this is a keeper.”

Cooper Register’s 2024 plans
With the Mini Cooper Register planning
a busy 2024, it has already confirmed
the date of its flagship event – the
National Mini Day at the National
Motor Museum, Beaulieu, which next
year takes place on Sunday, June 9.
David Hucker, the Register’s public
relations officer, told MiniWorld: “This

the artwork design completed, featuring
an array of different Minis that will include
a 1960s Cooper S and a 1971 Clubman,
set against the backdrop of Minimine’s
Staffordshire headquarters. Then for the
second stage, Bex will use acrylic paints
and a touch of three-dimensional magic
to bring the whole creation to ‘life’.

the latest recreation of the iconic Mini
Moke, says the Electric Moke is the only
vehicle with no roof and no doors to have
achieved European certification as a road-

Produced over a period of 20 years, Vortz
Minis are somewhat mysterious but still
very sought-after by those in the know,
particularly in Japan. We catch
up with a highly significant
UK-based example…

W
hen British Leyland pulled
the plug on the original
Mini Cooper S back in
1971, it left a sizeable
void. If you wanted a Cooper in the
1970s or ’80s, you needed to source an
ageing original or soup-up a more basic
model yourself. However, something
else was afoot in a small village
just north of Romsey in Hampshire,
masterminded by a somewhat
mysterious self-taught engineer with
a remarkably keen eye for detail.
Nick Vrotsos is a name that will
probably be unfamiliar to a large
proportion of Mini fans, but his story
is a fascinating one. Having set up his
Vortz company while still a teenager
in the mid-1960s, he turned his hand
to virtually anything – automotive
and beyond – with big Jaguars and
diminutive ‘Spridgets’ among the early
cars given hefty performance hikes.
Minis were increasingly involved from
1974, though, and Nick would go into
production with his own take on the
Mini Cooper from ’77 – a move that »

would see several different retro-styled
models hand-built over the following
20 years. Nick became synonymous
with Vortz, to the extent that most
people knew him simply as Nick Vortz.
It would be wholly unfair to label
Nick’s Minis as mere replicas, because
they were so much more. Brand new
cars were stripped, repainted, retrimmed
and re-engineered with a whole host of
unique Vortz-made goodies, with only
around 20 per cent of the original parts
remaining. This meant the appropriate
authorities could be persuaded these
were new, Vortz-produced cars with
their own model type, albeit still under
the original manufacturer banner on the
registration document. Outside the UK,
Nick was even able to establish Vortz
as the vehicle manufacturer. Most of
the 340 cars built in total across the
various different models went to Japan,
but not all – as this very significant and
incredibly special example proves.
Bold move
Nick’s first production Minis were known
as the Vortz Mini Cooper S MkIV and
were similar in appearance to the factory
MkII S, but with wind-up windows and a
modified 1293cc engine. However, a new,
racier model would appear for the 1980s

in the shape of the 100bhp Cooper
Formula ‘R’, which would go on to be a
mainstay and really ramp things up to
the next level. Chassis records indicate
that 18 were produced prior to 1984,
but the example you see on these pages
is the car that started it off – chassis
number one, the very first Formula ‘R’
built. Never registered for the road,
as discoveries go it’s off the scale.
Nick’s Minis really got noticed in the
UK towards the end of the ’80s, just
prior to Rover’s own Cooper relaunch,
but the wheels were in motion long
before. And even then, they were still
rather mysterious to mainstream Mini
fans. In the beginning, Vortz Minis
were sold only through word of mouth
and returning customers. At that point
the classic car scene had yet to reach
its boom, and the Mini itself was in a
period of decline. It's been said that
Nick wasn't in it as a businessman
anyway, but had a fondness for
the Mini that meant he wanted to
produce his own version regardless.
Incredibly, virtually everything was
made, designed or commissioned in-
house – and it’s worth remembering
this was long before computers or
3D printing. Tooling had to be made,
adapted or tracked down from the
original BMC suppliers. For example,
the ’60s Cooper-style interior trim
was produced using the same coarse-
grain rollers that had been used to
make the original material for BMC,
which were rescued after being found
rusty and abandoned outside the
old ICI Paint division in Cheshire.
Parts made by Vortz included the
famous Vortz CR Rose Petal wheel –
Nick was part-owner of a foundry, and
had been producing them since the
'60s – plus the instruments, the cylinder
heads, camshafts, unique air boxes,
manifolds, exhaust systems… you name
it. Even the rear light castings were
made by Vortz, and Nick managed to
adapt the four-pot AP brake calipers
that BL was about to fit to the incoming

even considered making his own tyres.
Unique survivor
Formula ‘R’ number one is a remarkable
vehicle, and the time has now come
for it to be offered for sale for the first
time. Nick is a man who keeps himself to
himself, so the car is being looked after
by his friend, Dave Boswell, ahead of
being auctioned online by Evoke Classics.
Dave’s collection of rare and significant
Minis is nothing short of staggering,
but even he is hugely impressed by

the standard of Nick’s work. “He’s a
perfectionist,” says Dave. “Whatever he
does, it has to be 110 per cent. I don’t
think anyone else built cars like he
did – everything was brand new. A lot
went to Japan, or Taiwan… all over the
world. They were the next best thing to
a genuine MkI or MkII Cooper, and the
engines he built were better than those
fitted to the ’60s cars because they were
stronger and much more advanced.”
Although the car remains
unregistered, it’s not always been sat
idle. As well as being displayed in a
Rover dealership around 20 years ago,
it’s been used occasionally on trade
plates and has covered some 976 miles.
That’s not many in 43 years, but the
car is on the button and ready to go.
“It’s got a 648 cam in it [the only
design that wasn’t Nick’s own], and
I’ve got it ticking over like a watch,”
says Dave. “It sounds beautiful and it
revs straight from cold. I’ve got some
fast Minis, including the Arden 8-port
car that’s probably one of the fastest
Minis I’ve ever driven, and it seems to
be quicker off the mark than that.”
The Formula ‘R’ Minis featured 1293cc
engines, with numerous upgrades.

include lightened rods, Vortz’s own

steel centre main, a balanced Cooper S
pre-Verto clutch assembly and Duplex
timing gear. On top sat a gas-flowed
Cooper R-stamped head featuring
35.6/31 valves and – famously – Nick’s
own design of round exhaust ports,
which were found to give the best
power results. A matching Vortz
round-port exhaust manifold is also
fitted, as is a custom Vortz exhaust.
The inlet manifold was also made in-
house and joins two HS4 carbs, and
they are topped off with an example
of the now legendary Vortz airbox.
The gearbox, meanwhile, has also
been built with great care and runs
a 3.44 final drive. “The gearbox is
absolutely stunning on this car,” Dave
tells us. “It’s an early Jack Knight
gearset, and you know the gasket
between the clutch housing and the »

block? It hasn’t got one, and there are
no leaks. One of the things I’ve found
with these cars is they never leak oil.
To get the right pressure on the idler
gears, he never used a gasket. He just
made sure the two faces were brand
new. With the engine and gearbox,
he just ironed out the ‘faults’.”
Exterior-wise, the car harks back
to the race cars of the ’60s, with its
Almond Green paint, white roof and
Cooper Car Co decals, which would’ve
been hand cut. The cars were only
Cooper (and later Downton) striped
to attract nostalgic customers in the
Formula ‘R’ Minis featured
1293cc engines with
numerous upgrades,
pushing out 100bhp.

now buy. The idea was the dealer
would remove the stickers on sale, but
everybody seem to want to keep them
on, so that’s why most still have them.
The car also sports a right-hand
fuel tank (also made in-house) and a
set of those stunning 10in CR wheels
wrapped in Goodyear rubber. The rear
light units and grille are Vortz specials
too, the latter featuring neat cut-down
slats to allow air to the oil cooler. Nick
painstakingly made his own grilles at
first, but then managed to get original
manufacturer Piano Forte to make
them again. That tooling would’ve been
dumped otherwise, but would come
in handy – it was used to make the
grilles for Rover Coopers in the ’90s.
The interior is similarly special. The
extended dash pod was another
desirable in-house item, as were the
instruments and that coarse-grain
Cooper-style interior trim. The rear
seat still has its protective cover on,
and the front recliners have – perhaps
uniquely – been cut-down to provide
more room in the cabin. Later Formula
‘R’s have a leather-rimmed Moto-Lita
steering wheel, but number one has
an in-house item with a solid wooden
rim, which is a real work of art.

Big in Japan
Of course, this car is the genesis of
the Formula ‘R’, which would continue
to be produced for the next 16 years
with an increasingly global following.
Alongside the Vortz side of the business,
Nick was also selling new-old-stock
and reproduction Cooper parts under
the name Cooper Carponents. One
of his customers from Japan thought
the Formula ‘R’ Minis would go down
rather well in his homeland, and so
Nichioh Trade Services became the
Japanese agent for the cars, which
were sold under the newly-created
Cooper Car Co 84 Ltd brand (1984
being the year it was established).

Historics’ Mini duo
Two cars at opposite ends of the Mini
price scale found new homes in late
September, when the latest sale from
Historics Auctioneers (www.historics.
co.uk) took place at Bicester Heritage.
Most affordable of the two was a
1988 Mini City Automatic, a two-owner
example that had last changed hands
when it was only a year old. With just
33,000 miles under its wheels, the

impressive looking survivor – which
had been garaged from new – came
with a comprehensive history and
original paperwork. With a final sale
price of £6944 including fees, it
came close to hitting its pre-auction
estimate of £7000-£10,000.

restoration by a marque specialist, this
superb example came complete with
Group 2 wheelarches, a 1310cc fully
rebuilt powerplant, adjustable dampers,
vented front discs and much more. If

 Last of the Estates
A late-model example of the Mini HL
Estate, registered in May 1982 and
described by its specialist vendor
as “probably the best available in
the UK”, is now for sale. The car
was fully restored to a concours
standard in 2009 and has been
cherished ever since, winning
multiple awards at some of the
biggest Mini events in the process.
This matching-numbers Mini comes
with three large folders of history,
including its original handbooks,
Supercover paperwork, service
receipts and previous MoTs. The
comprehensive restoration was fully
photographed, showing just how
much time and expense went in to
creating this one-off load lugger.
This HL Estate also benefits from
numerous upgrades, including a
coil spring conversion and Cooper
S-spec disc brakes. The car sits on

Low-mileage LE 40
A superb looking John Cooper LE 40
that’s covered just 21,000 miles from
new and has been owned by the same
family for the last 17 years is now on the
market, with an asking price of £19,995.
According to Phil Mires, the Mini
specialist who’s selling the car, this
particular LE 40 is a “fantastic example”
that he describes as “one of the best
Minis I have driven”. The panels are
all thought to be original apart from
the outer door skins, with the correct
vented sills on both sides and the
original factory spotwelds visible
on the inner wings. The interior is in
the sort of excellent condition you’d
expect from such a low-mileage Mini.
Launched in 1999 to mark the 40th
anniversary of Cooper’s first Formula
One World Championship, the LE 40
remains one of the rarest Mini limited
editions, with just 300 units built.
Each car, which came as standard
with Sportspack wheelarches, was
sold in Brooklands Green with an Old
English White roof, while inside was
unique Grenadine Red leather trim.
This particular example, which
features a Maniflow exhaust, front
Hi-Los and fresh tyres all round,
was supplied new by Dixon Rover in
November 1999, since when it has
had various periods of careful dry
storage. Everything works as it should,
with the engine “pulling well through
all four gears”. The car will be sold
newly serviced and has an advisory-
free MoT through to May 2024. It also
comes with its original (stamped)
service book and a history file.

Northampton-based Turn Two Classics
has a number of Minis in stock at the
time of writing, most expensive of
which is a late-model Morris Cooper S
MkI priced at £49,995. The subject of a
thorough restoration in the early 2000s,
this S is finished in the handsome
combination of Island Blue with an Old
English White roof, and has recently
emerged from a private collection.
It might not be mint but
this ’64 Cooper S MkI is
remarkably original.

a Platinum Silver roof, it first hit the
road in November 2000 and has
covered just 21,000 miles since. The
paintwork is said to have a “beautiful
lustre” and the interior is unmarked,
with the car being impressively original
throughout. A new set of tyres was
recently fitted, and the Sport will
come fully prepared and with a fresh
MoT at its asking price of £19,995.

of time styling-wise, but this one continues to turn
as many heads now as it did in the 1990s.

ack in the late ’80s, Martin
Hadland came up with his
concept of how a turbocharged,
MG-branded Mini could have
been built by Rover. The completed
car went on to be shortlisted for a
competition in Fast Car magazine to
find its ‘Best Modified Mini of the Year’,
with the winner being decided via a
vote by the readers. They ended up
choosing Martin’s Mini as the stand-out
contender, and it went on to be the
cover star of the November 1991 issue,
with a full five-page feature inside.
Martin’s creation had even managed to
beat a Mini (powered by a 1750cc Maxi
engine) built by Andy Saunders, one of
the best known names when it comes to
custom vehicles in the UK. A competent
and highly creative car modifier, Andy
is well respected and has written books
on his often weird and wonderful
creations. The fact that Saunders was
beaten in the contest shows just how
impressive Martin’s handiwork was.
Indeed, Fast Car went on to describe
Martin as a true Mini enthusiast, which
he confirmed: “Since passing my driving
test, I’ve always had a Mini around me.”
And it transpired that this was not his
first MG Metro Turbo conversion.
Tough start
This particular Mini started off as a
1988 Designer limited edition, which
was re-shelled due to accident damage
in ’89. Martin added a LAMM body kit,
costing the then hefty price of £500,
which he imported from Germany. He
had to modify the kit and bumpers to
fit those chunky 6x13in 100+ Bavarian
alloys. Mini enthusiasts will know the
LAMM Autohaus name, a company that
teamed up with Rover to sell a total
of 75 body-kitted convertible Minis,
inspiring Rover to create and produce
its own version in 1993. The bodyshell
of Martin’s Mini was then painted in
MG metallic British Racing Green.
An ERA bonnet bulge was fitted to
help cool the Garrett T3 turbocharger
from the MG Metro Turbo engine,
and decals featuring the iconic MG
octagon were applied. The head was
ported and, running a 10psi boost,
the engine produced 92bhp. Martin
said he had plans to install Metro
Turbo Challenge pistons to lower the
compression, fit sodium-filled exhaust »

valves, and replace the head.

The suspension featured Hi-Los and
adjustable gas dampers and the servo-
assisted brakes were upgraded with
Metro Turbo vented front discs and four-
pot calipers. Inside the car, meanwhile,
Martin fitted retrimmed Recaro front
seats from an Escort RS Turbo.
This is where Steve Saunders (no
relation to the aforementioned Andy)
comes into the story. His first car had
been a Hillman Imp but he soon saw the
light: “My second car was a modified
Mini”, he recalls. Then in November 1994,
Steve became the third owner of this

special example: “I saw it advertised
in Exchange & Mart,” explains Steve,
“and I purchased it the same day. It
was in superb condition. Unfortunately,
though, the head gasket went after
running 1.5 bar [21.76psi] pressure.”
January 1996 saw Steve sending
the car to a Mini specialist for repairs,
but it wasn’t a happy outcome: “The
work carried out was shocking and
the head gasket lasted fewer than
200 miles,” he recalls. “The turbo »

off for more mods and a full engine
rebuild by Neil Roper Developments.”
Remember those fancy pistons
Martin wanted to fit? Steve decided
to get them fitted: “It took over nine
months to get the pistons made, which
were only available to RAC race licence
holders,” he explains. “So, after sending
off a few copies of my karting licence,
they eventually made me a set.”
The Mini has a Jack Knight five-speed
close-ratio straight-cut gearbox with
a centre oil pick-up pipe. An ultra-
lightweight Verto flywheel has been
fitted, mated to a Turbo clutch.
Unfortunately, the project then
went on hold for several years when
Steve’s parents suffered a serious
accident. “The Mini was finally passed
to someone who promised to finish it
off for me in 2003, but he had the car
for over 15 years,” says Steve. “It was
apparently moved to several different
workshops, but after a while he refused
to answer my calls. I didn’t know where
the car was being kept until 2020.”
Thankfully, Steve located the Mini
and the project was taken on by
Automotive Sporting Heritage (ASH)
in Suffolk: “ASH finished it all off to
its current high standard. They are
well known for restoring cars to full
concours quality as well as building
racing cars, including some touring
cars, and providing trackside support.
They even have an in-house body shop.

ASH added some modern technology
to the car, as they manufacture
dry sump systems, aluminium fuel
tanks and charge coolers.”
The Mini’s bodywork was still in good
condition: “It hasn’t been resprayed,
but a few blisters on an A-panel
were addressed. It was mopped and
polished and new pin stripes were
applied. I also had new decals made.”
The engine needed a bit of attention,
though: “This was probably due to the
car sitting around. It was felt that the
piston rings may have lost some of their
tension, so a new set was purchased.
The crank and flywheel were rebalanced
and new big end and main shells fitted.”
Engine spec
The current engine specification is rather
special, as Steve has respected the vision
that Martin came up with all those years
ago: “The 1293cc A-plus Metro Turbo
engine still has those +0.020in Metro
Turbo Challenge forged pistons with
lightened and polished conrods. The

Garrett T3 turbo has been replaced with
a T2.5 turbo with a 360-degree thrust
bearing, and the boost is adjustable
from inside the car.” The 12G940 Metro
Turbo head has been gas-flowed, ported
and polished. There’s a Kent turbo
camshaft, Mini Spares aluminium high-
lift rockers and a wedged, balanced,
cross-drilled and tufftrided crank.
“The 2.9:1 diff was way too long in
fifth gear,” says Steve, “so we decided
to remove the engine and replace
the final drive with 3.44:1 ratio, with
a twin-pin diff that is more suited
to motorway driving.” A short-shift
gearchange kit has been fitted, too.
Steve tells us more about the car’s
adoption of modern-day technology:
“It was previously fitted with a large
intercooler, but ASH recommended
making a new modern and very efficient
charge cooler, complete with its own
water supply, and a cooling system for
the charge cooler that has a separate
cooling radiator with electric fans. It now
enjoys 26-28°C intake temperatures.
It’s all monitored by digital gauges.” »

The Mini was
recommissioned and given
modern tech by Automotive
Sporting Heritage.
The decision was made to also update
the ignition using a mappable system
from Polestar: “It has a crank sensor
and there’s a coil pack from a Ford
Fiesta. It runs a motorsport alternator
and refurbished HIF44 Turbo SU, and a
12-row oil cooler with remote oil filter.”
A modified MGMT plenum connects
stainless ducting with a Green cotton
air filter, mounted in the nearside
wing. A four-core aluminium radiator,
with a thermostatically-controlled
electric fan, provides cooling, plus
two extra fans for the charge cooler’s
radiator. Oh, and check out that
impressive custom stainless-steel
exhaust with oval centre-exit tailpipe.
Legendary Mini racer, the late
Peter Baldwin, tuned the Mini on
the rollers of Regency Autos in
Cambridge. “It was for running-in
purposes,” says Steve. It achieved an
impressive 101bhp at 5135rpm.
The interior was also refurbished:
“DS Thompsett retrimmed the Recaro
seats and door cards in half leather

with red piping.” It has new deep red
woven carpets, new red seatbelts,
new headlining, a walnut dash, walnut
centre console and wood-rimmed
steering wheel. Mod cons include
electric windows, a brace of LED gauges,
JBL speakers and a DAB head unit
with sat-nav and a flip-out screen.
“In March 2022, the Mini went for some
other modifications, just to iron out a
couple of issues, and was finally finished
in August of that year,” recalls Steve.
This latest work included a conversion
to P&L coil spring suspension. Since
then, he has spent many happy hours
polishing the Mini, which has covered
fewer than 3000 miles since Martin
Hadland built it all those years ago.
Sadly though, Steve has now decided
to part company with his Mini: “After
owning the car for 29 years, it’s time
to let someone else enjoy my hard
work and the car will be up for sale.”

Bonnet
not secure
I am having some issues with the
bonnet lock on my 1978 Mini. I
have fitted a new bonnet after
something fell on the original
and dented it. The fit of the new
bonnet is good – quite a bit better
than the original, but I am now
finding that the bonnet will not
stay latched. It actually opens
and shuts okay, but if I push it
down slightly or move it sideways
a little after it has latched, the
bonnet pops open again. I have
adjusted and readjusted the lock
on the slam panel but it seems
to make no difference. Do you
have any suggestions before I
give up and fit bonnet straps?
Trevor Avery
I take it that the bonnet
catch had been operating
normally before you fitted the
replacement bonnet? Also, you
do not say whether you fitted
the bonnet pin, spring and so
on from your original bonnet
or if the pin was already fitted
to the new bonnet. Either way,
I think that your problem is
likely be the bonnet pin.
You will need to note the height
of the pin. Assuming it’s correctly
adjusted and the closed bonnet
height looks right, remove it
from the bonnet and clean the
pin, cup, spring and locknut with
solvent. Then examine the pin;
you will most likely find that it
has some damage or mis-shaping
present. Usually, any damage
can be filed smooth; if this is not
the case, you should fit a new
pin (they’re inexpensive and
readily available). Reassemble the
components and then fit to the
bonnet. You can then try shutting
the bonnet and adjusting as
needed, as you did before, until
everything is working as it should.
Always remove the radiator
grille in the case of MkIII-
on grilles before adjusting
the catch mechanism.
New
clutch issue
I have recently installed a complete
rebuilt and upgraded 1293cc fast
road engine and gearbox unit into
my Mini. The unit was bought from
a reputable engine supplier. I am
noticing that when starting off,
the clutch (which is a diaphragm
unit) is not very smooth. It’s not so
bad that I would class it as clutch
judder but there is a slight shake,
and it’s certainly not the smooth
clutch that the old engine had.
The engine supplier tells me this
is normal and it will settle in. Do
you think this sounds reasonable
and do you have any suggestions?
Simon Haines
I think you have to consider it
to be judder even if it’s not very
bad at the moment. There are
two causes of judder, the most
common being a fault with the
clutch plate/pressure plate/
flywheel assembly; the other
is broken or very worn engine
mounts. I assume that you fitted
new engine mounts and this
can be discarded as a cause, but
from your description it sounds
like the judder likely originates
from the clutch assembly.
The first thing to do is check
the adjustment as described in
the Haynes manual. Vary the
adjustment slightly from the
recommendations if necessary.
If that makes no difference, try
pulling away a few times from
rest slipping the clutch a little
more than usual. This will help
the surfaces to bed in
– and it has worked on
numerous occasions
for me, both with new
clutches and old ones
when the car has

been the victim of a very jerky
driver with poor clutch control!
Don’t overdo it, though. If there’s
no improvement, I think you
should go back to your supplier
and ask them to sort it out.
Rusty
scuttle panel
I own a 1989 Mini that’s in very
reasonable condition apart from
some very bad rusting on the
windscreen wiper panel. The rust
is mainly at the base of the screen
and on the edge of the gutter at
the back of the bonnet. The screen
is not leaking but the water is
coming through at the back of the
bonnet and finding its way down
onto the floor on both driver and
passenger sides. How difficult is
replacement? Do I have to replace
the whole panel or can I just
replace the rusty centre section?
Pete Phillips
When you say “the whole panel”,
I take it you mean the whole
lower panel as shown in the
Heritage diagram and not the
entire windscreen surround.
You will only need to replace
the complete surround if there
is serious rusting at gutter level.
The windscreen scuttle panel is
difficult to replace as it must be
done very accurately to ensure
that the windscreen will both
fit and seal and will not have
any pressure points that might
cause the screen to crack.
The other issue is that unless, as
you suggest, you just replace the
centre section, the front wings
will also need to be replaced. The
interior trim at the front of the car
will need to be largely stripped
out, too. Unless you are very
competent with body repairs,
this is a job for a bodywork
expert with Mini experience.
Detail parts replacement, such as the rubber sleeves that protect
brake and fuel lines at the clamping points, are the finishing
touches that set a really good resto apart.
RESTORATION CORNER
BRAKE PIPE SLEEVES
Restoring a Mini (or any car), whether it be
ground-up or running, requires a huge amount
of effort, time and, of course, money. Costs in
all areas can usually be multiplied by three over
what was originally envisaged. And putting the
car back together is where the extra money
particularly comes into play. It’s at this point
that all the small items that had been put to
one side and left now need to be fitted up –
and it’s also when the realisation that most of
these parts are not good enough to be bolted
onto a freshly painted shell normally occurs.
How this is dealt with will make a huge
difference to the quality of the finished result;
many will have seen this on some of the
restoration shows on TV, particularly when it
comes to interior components. Those scruff y
switches or missing door handle gaskets
really do detract from the finished result.
The answer is not to rush the project,
and to seek out all of the detail parts from
wherever possible. Your usual Mini parts
supplier may not have the small items that
you need, but another specialist might – or
perhaps an autojumble will provide the answer.
Searching may take a while, partly because of
availability but also because of not knowing
what to call the part when searching online.
An example of detail parts that many restorers
will leave out are the small split rubber sleeves
that fit over the brake and fuel pipes under
the floor of a Mini to protect the pipe from
chafing against the welded-on clips securing
said pipes to the body. These, it would seem,
are available only from Somerford Mini (part
number 6K751) at £1.15 each including VAT. Not
cheap, but it’s great to actually be able to find
them. I’m fitting new sleeves all along on my
current project, although it’s worth noting that
sometimes a few of the old ones survive okay

calipers. Will this be an easy conversion,
and what wheels would you suggest?
Rob Hayter
Downsizing the front brakes is a fairly
straightforward conversion, although
I wouldn’t class it as a ‘downgrade’ as Mini Spares alloy calipers for 7.5in discs
your Mini will look great and you’ll still are a great lightweight replacement
have excellent brakes, especially with
the alloy calipers that are much better
than the standard 8.4 items. I would
definitely suggest using S discs and down the 8.4in discs) and either Mini
drive flanges (rather than machining Spares or Mini Sport 7.5in alloy calipers.

You are right, and it is indeed
for the standard AP caliper.
good news that reverse rims
and standard Minifin type
drums are again available. What
you want to do sounds good,
but unfortunately there is an
issue with the idea. Reverse
rims will not fit over standard
Minifin drums – the inside of
the wheel fouls on the fins of
the drum. The same happens
with standard 3.5in Mini
wheels. It might be possible to
machine or grind off the fins
for clearance but this partly
defeats the object of the drums,
which is to improve cooling –
and I would not recommend
modifying the drums.
You have three options: first,
to fit the reverse rims to the
standard cast drums; second, to
fit the standard Minifins with Mini
offset alloys, such as genuine
Minilite or Dunlop alloy replicas;
or third, to fit Superfin alloy
spacer drums and longer studs
front and rear, and fit Cooper
S offset 4.5in steel wheels or S
offset Minilites, etc. The latter
option would be good if you
think that you might want to
upgrade to S discs in the future.
As for performance
improvements, definitely
yes with the wider wheels –
especially if you fit 165 section
tyres, but alloy drums will
only show benefit if you are
braking repeatedly from higher
speeds, in which case brake
fade will be reduced slightly.
998 head
choice
I am currently rebuilding a 998
engine to replace my rather tired
original. I plan to tune it lightly
to give a bit more power, mainly
to improve acceleration. I have a
12G202 cylinder head, and twin
1¼ SUs, which I am told came
from an MG 1100 engine. Can
you tell me what sort of power
increase this set-up will achieve?
Sandy Baker
The 12G202 head was fitted
to the standard single-carb
1098cc engine, not the MG
1100; although better than the
standard 998 head, it still has
shrouded valves. The 12G206 or
12G295 heads are much better,
and these heads were fitted to
the MG 1100. They would be a
better choice of head if you
can find one, but the problem
is that they’re fairly thin on
the ground these days.
You can have the 202 head
or your existing head modified,
but much of the work is already
done for you on a 206 or 295,
which will provide a significant
improvement in standard
form. Whatever head you
fit, ensure that you
have it machined
to give a suitable A 12G295

around in the late
JENNINGS PRECISION ’60s and early
’70s, and small
ENGINEERING ads like this were
common.
Looking back through old motoring magazines and
books can be a really pleasant pastime, especially on
a winter evening when it might not be possible to
work on your car. Titles like Cars & Car Conversions
and Hot Car frequently have Mini-related articles,
but it’s also worth obtaining and looking through
books relating to Mini tuning in the 1960s and
’70s. The tuning info is usually still highly relevant
today, and as a bonus a lot of the books of the
time had adverts from tuning part suppliers.
This is particularly so with Speedsport
publications, which were linked to Cars & Car
Conversions magazine. You’ll come across tuning
companies that you never knew existed, unless
perhaps you were around at the time and local to
the particular area. An example of such a firm is
Jennings Precision Engineering of Surbiton, Surrey.
Its cylinder head modifications advertised in the back of Clive Trickey’s
Tuning the Mini (third edition) look to be not only interesting but ridiculously good value now, although
£5 would have been a fair amount back in the day. Jennings, like so many others, is no longer in existence
but it looks like the premises are still there. Anyone know of them or recall having dealings with them?

race tuning, there’s a wide array of options available to today’s
Mini owners… but where should you start?

Mini tuning options

T
he fact that it responds so well to tuning,
and that such a huge variety of parts is
available to enable such work, is surely
one of the Mini’s greatest appeals. Once
you’ve decided to uprate your Mini, however,
it’s essential that you plan what you want to
achieve from the start. Needless to say, this will
depend upon your budget, the use planned
for your Mini, and whether the tuning is to be
completed straight away or added gradually.
The popularity of Mini tuning originates with the
rallying and racing successes of the Works cars in
the 1960s, which led to BMC Special Tuning offering
a range of equipment upgrades ranging from Stage 1
kits right through to full race engines. Fast forward to

Hi-lift roller rockers are common on today’s conversions as
they are equivalent to fitting a hotter cam and can be used on
their own, perhaps in a Stage 2 engine or together with a cam
upgrade. An upgraded cam can, of course, be used with standard
ratio rockers – and if so, these 1.3:1 ratio (slightly increased over
standard) roller tip rockers from MED are an excellent choice.
Higher ratio 1.5:1 rockers are also available from MED.

arold Radford Coachbuilders
first began converting Minis
in 1963, creating the kind
of bespoke transport that
particularly appealed to the rich and
famous – including the Beatles – for
driving around London in. Tony Knight,
the proud owner of the example
featured here, has been obsessed with
coachbuilt Minis since he first saw a
Radford Mini De Ville back in the ’60s:
“My brother, John, and I used to get up
early at weekends and drive straight
to London from Christchurch, and that
was on the old roads, to spend all
day looking for Radford Mini Coopers
and Mini Cooper Ss,” he recalls.
Both brothers were ardent fans of
special Minis: “John had a blue 1963
Radford Cooper 997cc at the time. We
originally saw a black Mini, with black
windows, and I was absolutely beside
myself with excitement. After that I kept
looking, and we found places where
about nine or more interesting Radford
and Wood & Pickett Minis parked
regularly in mews houses off Sloane
Square, King’s Road in Chelsea, Belgravia
and Kensington. We spent years looking
at the Minis and I ended up getting a
Radford as soon as I could afford one.”
Tony has since gone on to own a
wide array of different Minis. “On and
off, I’ve had quite a few different types
and styles,” he explains. “I’ve had some
fast Minis and I’ve had several rally
Minis, and even a 1275cc Unipower GT.
But it’s the coachbuilt models that I’ve
always come back to.” Included in his
current collection are three Radfords
and a Wood & Pickett Margrave Mini.

“We used to drive to London to spend all
day looking for Radford Mini Coopers”
in Almond Green and in left-hand drive
spec. It was shipped to Spain in July
of that year and was delivered to the
Bilbao Trade Fair, where it was bought
by a Spanish customer. The car was then
sent back to Britain to be converted by
Hammersmith-based Radford into the
coachbuilt Mini you see here… although
it was a different colour back then.
Radford’s cars were the epitome
of Mini luxury, equipped with many
features from top-quality behemoths
produced by the likes of Rolls-
Royce and Aston Martin. Expensive
accessories were included, such as
fancy dashboards, a plethora of gauges,
cigar lighters, leather-trimmed Microcell
seats, map-reading lights, opening
quarterlights in the doors, wind-up
windows, door lights, plush carpeting,
door-cappings and radios. You can
certainly see why such opulence would
pique the interest of young Tony.
Externally, those Rolls-Royce colours
would have looked very smart. The

chrome waistline was taken from the
Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet (BMC’s
own version of a luxury Mini), and
Radfords were also often equipped
with Benelite grilles, fog and spotlights,
roof aerials, Webasto sunroofs and
expensive alloy wheels. Items supplied
by premium manufacturers, including
lights by Marchal, were also used.
This car’s original owner, who Tony
believes was called Miguel, specified
silver over Rolls-Royce Regal Red
paintwork with grey leather trim.
“As with most Radfords exported to
southern Europe, no Webasto sunroof
was ordered because of the intense
heat and sunlight in the region,”
explains Tony. “However, the usual
Mini De Ville specification of electric
windows, swivelling quarterlights,
a roof aerial, Marchal parking lights,
chrome waistline trim, Microcell reclining
seats and so on was included.”
The conversion included engine
mods by Downton Engineering Works,
but Tony is unsure of the current
specification of the 998cc powerplant:
“It’s fairly mild – it was tuned by
Downton but I’ve no indication of
exactly what was done.” He does,
however, recall visiting the legendary
tuning company, based near Salisbury
in Wiltshire, in the 1960s: “I went to
Downton in its heyday. It was a proper,
modern-looking building. When you
went through the shop door, there
was a counter with a flip-lid and there
was a green Downton badge screwed
to the counter – it was all bent up, as
when the bloke went to the stores
to get you something for your order,
everybody would try to pinch that
badge! The cylinder head man was
George, and Richard Longman also
worked there. Then when Richard
set up in Christchurch, I used to go
there. I was a right anorak and was
really impressed by the cars that were
produced. I even built my own super-
lightweight ‘pop rivet wonder’ speed »

Back to perfection
For 46 years the Radford Cooper
remained in Spain, with the odometer
suggesting it had covered just 20,000
miles in all that time. In 2012, though,
it was once again loaded onto a ship
that was headed towards the land of
its ‘birth’. And upon its arrival in the
UK, it found itself in good company,
with some world-renowned Mini
restorers and Radford experts involved
in its restoration. The colour was
changed to silver over Aston Martin
California Sage Green, complemented
by silver-grey leather upholstery.
During the process the car was also
changed to right-hand drive.
After a seven-year struggle with
the DVLA, the Radford was finally

registered in the UK in 2019 by its
then Mini-collecting owner, from
whom Tony bought the car in 2021.
Faced with minor teething troubles,
he welcomed it into his collection by
addressing some mechanical issues,
as well as tidying up a few things. He
sourced some period-correct Radford
items and added some original extras.
“It started with taking the entire
GT dash out,” says Tony. Radford
dashboards are very complicated,
with many electrical components and
switches for what were considered
‘mod-cons’ in the 1960s, such as electric
windows. Fortunately though, Tony’s
son, George, is an electrician and was
happy to help out: “The wiring was like
a bird’s nest. I felt so sorry for George’s
knees as it took him days of hard work.
He fitted a new front loom and put
new fuse boxes in, so we know what’s
what. We also fitted electric screen
washers, an original cigar lighter, new
Lucas switches and a period-spec
Motorola radio with Radiomobile aerial.” »

Tony wasn’t happy with the finish
on the dash, centre console and
door cappings, and so he decided to
fit replacement polished rosewood
veneer. New rubbers were fitted
around the electric windows and
weatherproof trims around the doors.
A few other bits and pieces were
replaced and rechromed, including
new-old-stock Radford wing badges,
a Lucas 608 dipping rear-view mirror,
colour-coded Rose Petal alloys (which
replaced the Cosmics), Riley 2.6 chrome
headlamp bezels, a stainless steel
badge bar, a Bradex fire extinguisher,
Radford door ashtrays, Lucas overhead
map lights and appropriate seatbelts.
The most conspicuous addition
that Tony has installed, however, is a
refurbished full-length Webasto sunroof,
covered in Slate Grey Everflex material.
The grey headlining was trimmed
accordingly and matching sun visors
were made. Impressively, he also painted
the two waistline pinstripes himself.
Tony doesn’t just see himself as the
owner of this Mini; instead, he feels like
the custodian of a very special piece
of Mini history. He enjoys displaying
his cars at Mini events around the
UK as well as being part of the elite
coachbuilt Mini scene. He feels it’s
important to encourage younger
people to learn about these special
versions to ensure a safe future for
them… and we couldn’t agree more. Q

I
want to begin this Logbook
with a profound apology to all of
MiniWorld’s incredible readers.
Life has taken countless turns
for me in the time since my last entry
– so many that I’ve been struggling
to get into the headspace to write
something interesting for you to read.
Losing both my grandmother and
great aunt to old age, and then my dad
to a horrific illness around 12 months
later, has been incredibly painful. And
on the opposite side of a huge cascade
of emotions, I got married to my
best friend back in April. It’s all been
happening. But enough of that… let’s
get on to the latest progress I’ve been
making with Mary, my Mini MkI.
The build process has been coming
along well following the fitment of
my beautifully powder coated front
and rear subframes, having first fitted
everything from the steering rack to
my new Hydrolastic suspension pipes.
The originals had become somewhat
brittle in places – not great for around
260psi! On from that, my main goal
was to get the car sitting on its own
wheels (which, I want to add, are now
snazzy 4.5x10in Cooper S steels), so
I knew full well that the suspension
and brakes needed to be built up.
Starting at the front with the car
raised on our ramp, I first locked the

restored Hydrolastic displacers into their
positions inside the subframe, taking
care to properly locate the supporting
brackets before screwing them in place
with four stainless self-tapping screws.
Next came the top arms, which I’d
previously renovated with new roller
bearings, shafts, grease and paint,
which slotted nicely into the fresh
subframe. For reasons unknown to
me, I somehow forgot to fit the knuckle
joint on the offside into the displacer,
meaning the arm needed to be removed
and refitted again (likely because of my
excitement at finally building the car).
The lower arms were then fitted
with new bushes before being secured
in place with new pins, washers and
nuts. Unfortunately, the original
tie-bars were in a frankly appalling
condition; they were bent and rusted
beyond any reasonable and sensible
repair, which meant placing a Mini
Spares order for a couple of new
ones. It was entirely necessary and,
considering they also came with new
bushes, it really was the best option
to enable me to make progress.
Once the arms were on the car, it
was a simple case of slotting the newly
built 7.5in Cooper S disc hubs into their
respective slots – a job, I have to say,
that’s far easier on a depressurised
Hydrolastic Mini than it is on cars

of fitting the drums and wheels
so I could have a good look at
the car coming together”
no pressure to work against on the
top arm. The front wheels temporarily
went on after this, just so I could lower
the car down and get an idea of what
it’d look like with its new wheels.
Having raised the Mini back to a
sensible height for work, my attention
turned to the rear suspension. I’d
already (perhaps foolishly) repainted
the rear radius arms; I say foolishly,
because I always intended to replace
the roller bearings and copper bushes,
which until this point I’d neglected
to do. So, despite the possibility of
ruining the paint, I began work with
my bearing puller. It took some time
to get the almost 60-year-old parts
to start moving, but thankfully, once
they’d broken free of where a BMC
worker had placed them in 1965,
they came out with relative ease.
The new items are easily fitted with
the help of a special reaming tool – a
tool I didn’t have access to. My only
option, therefore, was to go at it the
old-fashioned way using small, fine
files and emery paper, taking constant
care to ensure the surfaces remained
straight and true. The new bearings
and copper bushes were then easily
but firmly pushed in with the help of a
large vice, in place of a press that I’ve
still yet to buy. After all the rigmarole,
it was a blessed relief to be able to
simply bolt on the complete brake
drum back plate assemblies to the
refurbished arms. The paint, by some
huge miracle, somehow managed to
remain undamaged throughout it all…
Fitting the arms and back plates to
the rear subframe was simple, albeit
fiddly. It was a question of slotting the
suspension struts (with the greased
knuckles on the ends) into both their
positions on the radium arm and the
locked-in displacer units. Following
this, it didn’t take a great deal to fit
the hubs (which I’d previously fitted
new bearings to) onto the back plates,
taking care to observe that one side
has a reverse thread on the hub
nut! Of course, at this point, rather
like at the front, I couldn’t resist
the temptation of fitting the drums
and wheels so I could have a good
look at the car coming together.
Lowering the Mini down once
again, using the ramp to support it
at around the correct ride height, I
took some time to admire just how
amazing it was finally starting to
look. Mary the Mini was back – and
well on the way to being roadworthy
again for the first time in a decade. I
couldn’t have been more excited.

y 1974 Innocenti Mini
Cooper not only unites three
generations, it actually
inspired the design of our
brand new home. One of the first
memories I have from childhood is as
a four-year-old driving around with
my dad in his 1975 Authi Mini Cooper. I
can clearly remember the sound of the
engine, the sunroof, and how special
I felt turning the wheel of that little
car. I can also clearly remember the
day he sold it in 1981, after which my
only connection with Minis were the
stories that my dad would tell me.
During the 1980s and early ’90s, I filled
my bedroom walls with magazine cut-
outs of Ferraris, Bugattis, Lamborghinis,
Jaguars, Corvettes and just about
Benny and Laura made sure there was a Mini playing a role in their wedding day in 2008.

After 13 years and many stories, I finally
got to see a Mini once again… and I
was stunned by just how small it was.
I couldn’t picture this car winning so
many races, although it looked cool and
clean with its white paint job. I hopped
inside and was taken aback by the
wood-veneer dashboard and the smell
of leather upholstery. Its engine was
a 998cc A-series with twin SU carbs.
My father bought us the Mini and it
went on to become my high school car.
That night, though, as we drove back to
Cartagena, I couldn’t quite believe that
we were back in a Mini. All those stories
from my father finally came together and
we solidified our bond through that car.
In high school, I relieved my dad’s
teenage experiences in our latest Mini.
I remember taking drives through
the city, racing my friends, and at
one point I managed to crash it.
One day, we even fitted nine friends
(four in the front, five in the back)
inside the Mini, an achievement that
became the talk of the town. Finally,
in 1995, I drove to my high school
graduation in that much-loved car.
Innocenti quest
By 1997 I was moving to Florida, and
for the next couple of years I learned
more about the Mini’s history. I also
discovered Innocentis, which caught
my attention for being the only Cooper-
spec cars available between 1971 and
’75. What most caught my eye, however,
was the Innocenti’s dashboard. I was
hooked… and I had to have one.
I moved back to Colombia in 2005 and
a few years later met Laura, my future
wife. Following in my dad’s footsteps, we
drove off as newlyweds in a classic Mini
in 2008, and three years later we moved
to Houston, Texas. My son, Benjamin,
was born in 2012, followed a couple of

years later by my daughter, Cristina. Little

did they know at the time, but Minis
were to become engraved in their future.
I spotted an Innocenti Mini Cooper
for sale at a classic car dealership in
Atlanta, Georgia, in 2013. I told my father
about the opportunity and helped him
to buy it. The car looked okay, painted
bright white but with upholstery that
was quite beaten up. With the help of
Sergio Ochoa at Classic Mini Coopers of
Miami, my dad completely rebuilt the
engine in 2016. The restoration included
taking out the engine to replace the
pistons, bearings and so on. In addition,
the block was rebored, cleaned up
with acid solution and reassembled
with new parts. My father enjoyed
the Mini for a couple of years, but in
2017 he decided it was time to pass
it on to me so that I could enjoy the
Inno’ with his grandchildren in Texas.

I wanted to keep the Inno’ as close to

original as possible. I wasn’t too happy
with the bright white colour scheme
the car came with, and I decided to
bring it back to its original shade;
after a lot of research, we found the
correct Bianco Avorio colour code. We
took the Mini apart and repainted it
to a very high standard. I then rebuilt
the carburettors and updated the
distributor and starter to new electronic
versions. Inside, I upholstered the seats
with black leather and purchased a
brand new Innocenti carpet set from
Newton Commercial in the UK.

my children the experiences I’d had

THE SCENIC ROUTE

Earlier this year, Karen and Jim took MiniWorld’s project car,
Sheldon, on a trip to Cornwall to enjoy a Mini cruise, local
delicacies and a leisurely return journey via Devon

A
s we were unable to go to this
year’s IMM in Italy, Jim and
I decided to make the most
of our annual pilgrimage to
Cornwall for the Riviera Run, organised
as always by the Cornish Mini Club.
As it was previously supported by
MiniWorld, we’ve been visiting this
long-running event for many years.
The first Riviera Run was held way
back in 1995, and these days it’s
based in and around the Pentewan
Sands Holiday Park, near St Austell.
Our BMH-reshelled 1990 Racing
Green LE, known as Sheldon, had a
few post-winter issues to get sorted
beforehand, but we were soon on our
way… once we’d stocked up with plenty
of road trip snacks and loaded up with
some essential tools, just in case.
We left Surrey at around 8am on
the last Friday in April, our intention
being to avoid motorways as much as
we could. We also wanted to miss out
the dreaded Stonehenge bank holiday
weekend traffic on the A303, but ended
up going through Salisbury during
what was a particularly busy lunchtime,
which was unfortunate. Using a map
rather than a sat-nav, like in the ‘olden
days’, we enjoyed driving through
quaint villages and towns. We also came
across an ornate archway, which we
couldn’t resist driving through, which
led into the Fonthill Estate, a 9000-acre
area privately owned by the Morrison
family since 1830 and comprising
houses, parkland and woodland.

there are a number of areas on the
estate that are used for weddings.
Because of our non-conventional
route, we didn’t arrive at the Riviera
Run base until just before 6pm, so
we were pleased when our friends,
Sandra and Colin Wright, welcomed us
with some cold and frothy beverages
in their caravan. After a meal in the
on-site restaurant, we slept well and
were up bright and early the next
morning to wash Sheldon and take
him down to the showground to join
all the other Minis and show visitors.
By late afternoon, we were keen to
tackle the coastal path from the Holiday
Park to the scenic harbourside village of
Mevagissy. Once there, we stocked up on
pasties and had a cream tea to increase
our sugar levels for the walk back. It
was a challenging, hilly walk of around
four miles and it was a hot and muggy
day, but our adventure was well worth
it for the stunning sea views. Once

up our Mini and set off early towards
Torquay, as we had a lot to pack in
to the day. Again, we took long and
winding roads, many of which were
very narrow; quite a few even had
grass growing in the middle. These
roads are great fun to drive but you
have to keep your wits about you in
case you meet another vehicle head-
on. Before long, though, we’d crossed
the River Tamar and were in Devon.
We often break up journeys with
a visit to a garden, and this time we
stopped at Hotel Endsleigh, a Grade I

listed building in the Tamar Valley. It’s
now a grand five-star hotel, owned
by the Polizzi family. The amazing
108-acre gardens surrounding it were
designed by acclaimed landscape
designer, Humphry Repton (1752-1818).
We were amazed by the various formal
gardens, herbaceous border, rockery,
champion trees and scenic valley walk.
The hotel terrace and the incredible
shell grotto were highlights, too.
Country lanes with
grass growing in
the centre were a
common sight.
The next destination was the rugged
Dartmoor National Park, the largest
open moor in southern England. As
I looked for pretty areas to park up
Sheldon for some photos, Jim kept an
eye out for the beautiful and iconic wild
Dartmoor ponies. Previously used by
locals as working animals, they are a
very hardy breed of pony, now allowed
to roam the moorland. Many had foals
with them, so we parked up to watch

them for a while and went for a little
stroll and a sandwich stop. Dartmoor
has some cracking roads, but also a
sensible speed limit as the ponies and
sheep don’t follow the Highway Code.
Seaside fun
We finally headed to Torquay, and it was
great to be back at the seaside with the

priced room, which we booked a couple
of months in advance, even had a view
of the harbour. We headed straight
out for a coastal stroll, with a slight
deviation through the formal Princess
Gardens that were named after Queen
Victoria’s fourth daughter, Princess
Louise, who laid the foundation stone
for a pleasure ground in May 1890.
On to the marina in search of food
and refreshment, we opted for pizza
and local ales. After walking further
round to the sea wall, we went back
via the impressive Royal Terrace
Gardens (aka Rock Walk) to the
Beefeater restaurant below the hotel
for delicious ice cream sundaes.

The next morning saw us driving a
short distance to Cockington, a scenic
village and country park with pretty
thatched cottages, a Manor House,
parkland, woodland, an 11th century
church, a craft centre and ornamental
lakes. We paid for parking for a couple
of hours but there was so much to see
that we soon went back to top it up.
Jim has always been fascinated by
glass blowing and absolutely loved
seeing sister and brother, Patricia
and Mark Tranter, of Our Glass in
Cockington Court, making a stunning
vase. The two were beautifully
synchronised and lost in their art as
the process of heating, cooling and
blowing transformed molten glass into
a thing of beauty. After that it would
have been rude not to try the delicious
cakes in the Seven Dials café. We’ll be
back at some point, as we’d love to spend
more time there and enjoy some local
walks – there’s plenty more to explore.
Somewhat later than planned, we set
Sheldon on a homeward trajectory, still
trying to avoid major roads for a while
before hopping on the motorway for our
final part of the journey. It had been a
fantastic trip: Sheldon had performed
faultlessly, the weather had been very
kind to us, and we’d thoroughly enjoyed
driving a Mini on so many of the south-
west’s fi nest winding country lanes. All
we need to do now is work out where
our next Mini road trip will take us.

the Sea, an annual charity fundraising event that’s well worth a visit

September, Mini fans were treated
to all three in Worthing, courtesy of
the West Sussex Mini Owners’ Club.

town centre shops and restaurants.
By 10.30 in the morning, all the Minis
were parked up and ready for the grand
opening of the show in the form of
a sounding of Mini horns. Glorious
weather meant there were smiles all
round, and some lovely Minis turned
up to take part in the event, which
raises funds for Chestnut Tree House
and St Barnabus House hospices.
Lots of variety on the Southern
Mini Owners' Club stand.
Participants donate via collection
buckets, a charity auction and a raffle.
This year there were autojumble
stalls, as well as stands selling toys,
cakes and refreshments, with the
addition of a bouncy castle for the
little ones. DJ Martin Black provided
the perfect soundtrack to the event,
which makes a great day out for the
whole family to enjoy. It’s also open
to the public for free, so it’s a busy »

There were numerous Mini
clubs in attendance. Sadly, a couple
couldn’t make it on the day, which
left the odd gap on The Steyne, but
we’re sure that all the Mini owners
who were there had a great time.
It’s a super show for chatting with
Mini friends old and new, while the
fantastic weather made this year’s
even more of a pleasure than usual.
WSMOC gives out prizes for stand-
out Minis taking part in Minis by the
Sea, with each winner being awarded
a beach ball and a much sought-after
rosette. The charity raffle concluded
proceedings, at which point most
of us headed for the ice cream van
to cool down via a sweet treat.

Hot new Cooper

Proudly promoting the ‘S Type’ Morris Mini Cooper
was this 1964 brochure, which insisted that the
latest Cooper was better than ever: “Now even
further enhanced by the availability of 970cc or
1275cc power units, each with a choice of two
sets of gearbox ratios and four final-drive ratios!”
Just three years on from the launch of the
original Cooper, the new Cooper S models
were the ultimate in high-performance small
saloons. And with the illustrations throughout
this brochure showing the Cooper in race
and rally guises, BMC was leaving nobody
in any doubt as to its target market.

Reduced
range
Issued by BL Cars in late
1980 was this rather
flimsy 24-page brochure
covering the company’s
extensive range, featuring
that year’s new Metro and
Ital on the front cover,
along with the Jaguar XJ6,
Rover 2600S and Triumph
TR7. The Mini, meanwhile,
was given just one page
of coverage inside, despite
the upgrade it had received
earlier in the year.
The accompanying
text boasted that “this
year, the legendary
Mini comes of age”, an event that coincided with the little
legend being given “added refinements and features”.
The basic concept of the Mini hadn’t changed, though,
as this was still a car “small enough to nip through city
traffic… large enough inside to make driving a pleasure”.
The latest three-car Mini line-up comprised the City, HL and
HL Estate, each one offering 39bhp from its 998cc engine, with
automatic transmission an extra-cost option across the range.

Italian job
British Leyland may have killed off the Mini Cooper
as early as 1971, but the company’s Italian division
still saw potential for the world-famous name, hence
the arrival of the Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300.
Although it sold well in Italy, Innocenti’s Cooper also

BL issued a new Mini brochure in July 1979, just
a month short of the car’s 20th anniversary.
This was at a time when the Mini range was
extensive, with a full line-up that comprised
the 850 City, 850 and 1000 Super, Clubman
saloon, Clubman Estate and the sporty 1275 GT.
Shown here is the mid-range 1000 Super,
a model that cost £2543 in the summer of
’79. But it faced stiff competition from newer
small-car rivals, including the Fiat 127 900L
(£2541), the base-model Ford Fiesta (£2553)
and the entry-level Renault 5 (£2497).
According to BL, however, the Mini was the
safest bet of all: “For the young couple faced
with the many problems of setting up home
together… they need a well-proven car that they
can rely on in every way.” Two decades on from
its launch, the Mini had lost none of its appeal.

France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany.
This German brochure from 1974 was determined to keep
the Cooper flag flying, describing the British Leyland and
Innocenti partnership as “British/Italienische Cooper-ation”.

RAC memories
We recently heard from MiniWorld
reader Peter Driver, who bought his
first Mini – a Clubman – way back in
1975. Peter says he particularly enjoys
the Memory Lane section of the
magazine, and has his own memories
of working for the RAC: “I’m retired
now, but back then I patrolled the
M62, Britain’s highest motorway, and
was issued with a Land Rover.”
Peter recalls, however, the arrival of
the Mini Van, which revolutionised the
RAC’s breakdown services, particularly in
rural areas. The photograph here shows
a line-up of new RAC Mini Vans about
to enter service, explains Peter: “The
wheels on some of the roofs were part
of a motorcycle trailer stored inside the
van – they were not allowed to tow cars.”
The other photo shows a rather
larger RAC van tending to a stricken
Austin Seven on the motorway. But
according to Peter, “it was a publicity
shot – it wasn’t a breakdown.”

Ultimate
performance
The fastest production Mini of all time
was the factory-approved ERA Mini Turbo,
as featured in this launch brochure. ERA
(which originally stood for English Racing
Automobiles) approached Rover in 1988 to
revive its historic name on a very special Mini
– and the result was what you see here.
ERA engineered the car using as many
standard factory components as possible,
opting for the 1275cc unit from the MG
Metro Turbo, modifying the Mini’s bulkhead
to clear the Garrett T3 turbocharger, and
tinkering with the cooling system to deal
with the extra heat. Changes to the ECU
also saw the turbo produce more boost
higher up the range. Power output was
94bhp, enough for a claimed 0-60 time of
7.8 seconds and a top speed of 110mph.
The ERA Turbo was a real head-turner, with
its chunky body kit being styled to house the
unique 6x13in wheels. And there was proper
luxury inside, with a hand-trimmed dash
sporting a big array of VDO dials, extra sound
deadening and narrowed seats from the Metro.
Such upgrades didn’t come cheap, though,
with the ERA Turbo’s £12,000 price tag putting
it in Golf GTI 16V territory. Factory records
suggest that 436 were built, comprising
99 UK-spec cars and 337 for Japan.

Quieter Minis
BL added a touch of refinement to
the Mini in 1980, as explained in this
double-page advert that boasted:
“You’ve never heard it so good”. The ad
admitted that even the Mini’s biggest
fans would struggle to call it “the
best place for a quiet conversation”,
but things were about to change.
Suddenly the Mini came complete
with “comprehensive soundproofing,
from the roof to the dash to the
floor”. And there was attention
to detail, too: “Why, we’ve even
gone so far as to line the air intake
hose to absorb wind noise”.
The Mini’s fun factor remained intact,
the only difference being that “now
you can talk about it inside the car”.

Clubman
features
September 1977 saw a new Mini brochure
being issued, inevitably featuring the
entire line-up. And in the middle of
the range could be found the Clubman
saloon shown here, a model that offered
“extra performance, extra features”.
According to the brochure, “the Mini
Clubman saloon really looks a special kind
of Mini”, a car guaranteed to turn heads
thanks to its “distinctive bonnet, coachline
and wheel trims”. It was lively, too, powered
by the 1098cc (45bhp) version of the
venerable A-series engine, whilst inside it
offered various luxuries like “cropped nylon
seat wearing surfaces”. The photograph
used in the brochure showed a two-car
couple, with the Clubman parked on the
drive and a Rover 3500 in the garage.
