50th anniversary
SUPERFAST
SPENDING SPREE
WITH the 50th anniversary of the launch of Matchbox Superfast
occurring in 2019, it seems to have heightened interest and
values seem to be creeping upwards. This was reflected in a
recent Vectis auction (6th December 2018) when two examples
fetched £1,100 each!
CORGI’S 2019 RANGE The Specialist & Tin Plate Toy Sale featured a substantial
quantity of Matchbox models, much of which was Superfast.

Matchbox Superfast No 64 MG 1100 (lot 2418) features the
usual metallic blue body, clear windows, ivory interior and
bare metal base but comes with 5-spoke wide wheels, which is
exceptionally rare, in fact the Vectis auctioneers noted that it
was the first one that they had ever seen! Also unboxed, overall
its condition is near mint but the interior is a little dusty/dirty
from display thanks to the open side windows. The pre-auction
estimate reflected its rarity at £400-£500 but this was still
substantially exceeded. ■

ollecting military models has always
interested me and quite a few were
in my childhood collection. As the
Dinky Toys military models were
released in the 1950s, I was eager
to obtain them. There was plenty of action in our
playroom campaigns and models were ‘damaged’
in action portraying real life situations. The tanks
could be recovered with a tank transporter, but other
vehicles needed to be rescued and towed with a
recovery vehicle.
The Dinky Supertoys Recovery Tractor (No
661) was released in June 1957 and was reviewed
in the Meccano Magazine of that month. In the
Dinky News the Toyman says “In every line its
appearance suggests power and strength, and the new
Dinky Supertoy has captured the impression of its
prototype exactly. The model is fully detailed, with
a working crane controlled by a neat handle that
projects from one side of the body. A simple ratchet
device is fitted to the winding shaft to prevent the
hoisting cord from unwinding when the ratchet is
engaged. The ratchet can be released to allow the
load hook to be lowered.”

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
A VW Beetle
from Argentina
Andrew Ralston checks out a South American rarity.
C
onsidering that the histories of
Argentina and Spain have been closely
linked since the sixteenth century, it’s
not surprising to find that similar close
connections exist between the toy
industries in the two countries.
One of the more obscure companies to
make diecast toys in Argentina was Aguti that,
confusingly, also used two other names: Rapitoy
and Loden. It was around 1974 that this company
brought out some Matchbox-sized cars. The
first two, and the most collectable today, were a
Volkswagen Beetle and a Ford F100 pick-up,
clearly taking their cue from Matchbox, though
quality wasn’t quite so good. On the Beetle, for
example, the base is often badly attached to the
body, leaving a gap showing. Unlike Matchbox,
these models – the Beetle in particular – can be
found in a wide range of colours.
It could be said that right from the very start
that Aguti was behind the times, as the arrival
of Hot Wheels a few years earlier had given
other manufacturers a fright, leading it to fit to local enthusiast Hernán Martínez,

Late Brian. Not so. At ten you don’t dwell on such
things when you have the delights of the open road
to consider. I liked my bike so much that I bought
a chrome-plated bell, shaped like a jet turbine, and
white handlebar grips to enhance its beauty.
The best pair of shoes ever to encase my unworthy
feet were found in a charity shop. Soft Italian leather
brogues that had been worn, at most, once; enough
to mark the smooth soles. I didn’t wonder at the
time but I do now, what happened to their original
owner? Did he emerge from a Bond Street shoe shop
to drop dead as he waved down a taxi? Or, more
dramatically, was he cut to shreds by the ever-popular
hail of bullets as he stepped lightly out of his Soho
club towards his white Lancia? Those shoes lasted me
almost thirty years and it was my feet that gave up on
their slender elegance, not the shoes wearing out that
forced us to part company. I hope they walk on.
I believe I mentioned once that that a gentleman
had built a replica of the Jaguar saloon in which Mike
Hawthorn had died; a tribute of a sort but isn’t it
a touch morbid or even tasteless? The original car,
a Mark I 3.4-litre, was nothing out of the ordinary
at the time and nice examples still exist, some
with significance in motor racing history. I am not
superstitious but I would not be at ease in that replica.
However, shortly after the accident, having seen
newspaper photos of the wreck (before anyone could
hide them from me), I did think about constructing
a mock-up of the scene using my Spot-On Jaguar.
Little boys are fascinated by crashes. A new model
