If you had not worked out by now,
this is a superb kit with so much
to implore me to tell you to go
out and buy one immediately if
you are in the market for a newly
tooled 1/48 F-4B Phantom. There
is a reason Tamiya has a stellar
reputation in this industry and this
kit just further endorses that – the
offering is pretty much faultless,
but if one were to nit-pick, the
intakes could fit slightly better
and the tyres could feature better
tread detail.
Having built Hasegawa, Academy
and Zoukei-Mura 1/48 Phantom kits
in recent times, I can conclude that
“Tamiya’s for ease of building, this tops the
separate cockpit lot. For me, it just edges the last

therefore fit.

FIRST-AID LIVERIES
Being a test-shot, the kit to hand had no box, and initially lacked decals or
detailed painting schemes, as neither were finalised when the build was started.
In the absence of any kit scheme, and in a nod to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee,
it was decided to finish the model as the well-documented A1212251, in all
green, as photographed with the then HRH Princess Elizabeth while in the
Auxiliary Territorial Service as a 2nd Subaltern in 1945. Note that as the build
progressed, the proposed schemes and decals for the kit’s release were set
and a pre-production sheet of decals arrived during the final stages. The four
schemes offered are:
• Austin K2/Y Ambulance, 30 Corps, Motor Ambulance Convoy, Royal Army
Service Corps, Northwest Europe, 1944
• Austin K2/Y Ambulance, British Army, North Africa, 1940
• Austin K2/Y Ambulance, British Army, Alexandria, Egypt, 1942
Austin’s K2/Y ambulances had prominent red crosses on all sides, so
the external body parts and cab roof were first painted white, and masks • Austin K2/Y Ambulance, A1212251, Auxiliary Territorial Service, England, 1944

developed in conjunction with the Royal Army Medical Corps and therefore proved to be highly
functional. Able to carry either four stretcher cases or ten seated casualties, one of the main reasons
