Assembly started with the legs, lower body, and torso. ICM moulded parts of
the shirt/tunic as separate parts as this allowed for convincing undercut, and the
joins around these needed treatment with filler and sanding stick.
The head and gripping hands were glued next and needed just careful scraping with a hobby knife. The sword was
chosen as main weapon, as although the hand axe was well rendered, it lacked impact/presence, so was used on the base
instead. The shield handle was mostly made of justa wooden rod, and the metal version provided in the kit would later
obstruct painting of the face.
A lt was decided to paint the figure the bottom up, starting with the shoes,
leggings, and trousers. The shoes were painted using Scale75 Brown Leather,
Orange Leather and lroko, the linen leggings with Vallejo Khaki, adding Black
for shading and Deck Tan for highlights. The trousers were painted lighter, using
German Camouflage Beige and with Black and Deck Tan again for shading/
highlighting. Pure Deck Tan was used to stipple the weaved texture on both the
trousers and leggings.
~ On to the hauberk. Some research went into this to find out whether to paint
it as stuffed leather or cloth (both were used commonly but the latter was more
for high-ranked warriors). Leather is more visually interesting, so on it went. As
the belts, dagger, pouch, and scabbard would also be painted in leather tones,
different mixes were used. The hauberk was first painted with Black Leather
and Brown Leather for the shaded areas. Mid tones were added using Orange
Leather and lroko, and then highlights - sometimes stippled - with Sandalwood
and Birch mixed with Brown Leather. Most highlights were added to the upper
parts of the figure using pure Birch as this drew the viewer's attention to the face.
