There are various techniques employed by figure painters to recreate shading
and highlights on both skin and fabric surfaces with acrylics:
Wet palette – a means of preventing the paint from drying out too quickly
Layering/glazing – diluted paint or tinted water respectively, applied as a filter
to vary shades
Stippling – adding colour in a dabbing/dotting movement with a paintbrush

Wet blending – merging two areas of paint while still wet via a zig-zag motion

rose to become one of the best-

aviators of the Allied nations
during and after the conflict.
He was born on December
6, 1920, in Piqua, Ohio. His
parents were Italian immigrants
who moved to the US prior to
World War One. During his early
years, Gentile developed a
love of aviation, resulting in his
building many model aircraft.

Fighting proficiency
Gentile’s first claims came during
Operation Jubilee, the ill-fated
Dieppe raid of August 1942. His
squadron was one of several that
provided air cover for the Allied
amphibious attack, and he was
credited with a Focke-Wulf Fw

Junkers Ju 88. At that time, his
rank was Pilot Officer.
A major change took place
with the fortunes of the US
fliers in the Eagle Squadrons
later in 1942, when these units
were officially transferred to the
USAAF and became the three
combat squadrons within the
nascent 4th Fighter Group (FG).
Gentile’s 133 (Eagle) Squadron

Mudded areas were then treated with the same mixture as on the model for continuity; once this was

Still Water (www.creativemodels.co.uk) and Aurea Domus C-02-A Compliments (no longer in production),
which creates a greyer ‘sludge’ effect. This was applied to the scene edges and centre of the road. As it was
drying, boot prints were added with a 1/48 figure. The main snow effect was created by mixing the Still Water
with Deluxe Materials BD-26 Shovelled Snow (www.deluxematerials.co.uk). This was built up in several layers,
paying attention to how it was applied to the grass, and creating larger accumulations on flat surfaces. This
thicker snow effect was ‘dry-brushed’ onto the lower hull, tracks and running gear, to simulate hard snow
thrown up by the tracks. On the upper surfaces, some areas then received small build-ups of snow, with Wet
Effects Fluid placed around them to imitate water from melted ice.

Hawker Tempest Mk.V
One of the finest aeroplanes of the Second World
War, the Hawker Tempest V could trace its design
lineage back to the Hurricane fighters. The plane
entered Royal Air Force service in early 1944.
Although this was still a big aeroplane
for a single engined fighter, its
airframe was light and it was
powered by the massively
powerful 24 cylinder
Napier Sabre engine,
giving the new
fighter spectacular
performance.
Making its first
flight on 2nd September 1942, the Hawker
Tempest featured a newly designed laminar
flow wing, much thinner than the wing used on
its predecessor, allowing the new fighter to slip
through the air at incredible speed.
