TOMCAT DECALS
www.furballaero-design.com
Following the release of Tamiya’s superb 1:48 Tomcats we have seen some equally superb sets of decals, the latest from Furball is reviewed below. Furball and Fightertown have both issued comprehensive sets.
There is however a snag with these. Several of these sets are selling for upwards of £20 each. While being good value for money when looking at the contents of each set we ask how many modellers, no matter
how much they love the F-14, will be building ten models? Others such as MilSpec and CAM go to the other extreme and release decal sets with only one or two sets of markings. These are still between £10
and £15 each so not such good value per scheme and generally lack comprehensive sets of stencilling.
So, ‘you pays your money and takes your choice’. A good compromise is if two or three Tomcat modellers at your model club pool resources and buy a good set and then maybe draw straws or arm-wrestle
for who gets first dibs at the schemes on the sheet. It’s good to share.

This set of sixteen markings arrives on two A5-sized sheets and one small sheet carrying some white
markings. Both sets 1 and 2 are reissues, originally designed to fit the aged Testors kit. We don’t see any
reason why, with maybe the odd small adjustment, these will not apply equally well to the recent Revell kit.
Having compared the tail fins, not yet added to the progressing kit build, the NASA insignia fit properly and
if the long red NO STEP demarcation lines that run along the upper fuselage needs adjusting there are some

FINAL VERDICT
We’ve waited a long time for a new 1:48 Bronco, so I’m pleased to say that is kit was more than worth the time it has
taken to get here! Simply opening the box reveals the lengths that ICM have gone to, to create as detailed a model as
possible, with levels of accuracy and ease of assembly that match the very best.
It is of course not entirely perfect, this weapons brackets being a drain to deal with, but as a project to encore

this kit retails for (I grabbed mine from Jadlam) it’s an absolute steal.

FINAL VERDICT
This was my first 1:32 scale kit ever, and I really enjoyed the change from my usual 1:144 and 1:72! - ICM’s kit was
straightforward to build and held enough detail to be interesting, - it would make a great introduction to larger
scale for the less experienced modeller, although there’s no doubt that the added finesse of the Eduard and AIMS PE is
worthwhile. Perhaps I’ll start looking at those other ICM 1:32 biplanes like the Cr42 and the Gladiator....

Primed and pre-shaded, the model is ready for its camouflage. With most of the model being painted RLM65 blue its quite a quick job to paint a 109 like this. The
splinter camouflage was all applied freehand.
After masking the wing walkways and trim tabs, these were painted RLM23 Red. At this point the basic paintwork is done, there is more work to be done after the decals have been
applied.
After a gloss coat I applied the decals, these were a mix of Xtradecals and the kit’s own decals. After sealing the decals with another gloss coat was applied to bring out the surface detail. Note
the slats have now been fitted.

FINAL VERDICT
Wingsy Kit’s Bf 109 E-1 is a delightful kit, however it may be a little over complicated in parts with the photo
etch provided and we have the issue of the cutting re uired to fit the radiators and this is why I rated this as an
‘intermediate’ build rather than being suitable for beginners. The hints and tips Wingsy has provided online should
help modellers with the trickier elements of the build, in particular fitting the radiators. These don’t detract from
what is a simply superbly detailed model with mostly excellent fit. I liked it so much I have already bought a second
one, I think that says it all really.
