copious amounts of carbon fibre that is
synonymous with these kinds of vehicles. So
here I painted the main internal parts with a
mixture of Tamiya Gun Metal and Black mixed
to give the impression that carbon fibre was
present. Following on from that I carefully
painted all the various smaller details found
on the interior. The seat, steering wheel
and dashboard were also given the same
treatment to replicate the carbon fibre also
there were a handful of decals that I added
onto the dashboard and steering wheel.
These settled nicely with the aid of some
decal solution. I then put this to one side and
started to work on the engine block.
This was relatively straightforward
with the engine consisting of two halves,
and both cylinder heads were quickly
glued into position. With the main engine
block assembled I painted it using Tamiya
Aluminium, and the smaller details like the
cylinder head covers were painted Titanium

were then painted in their respective colours
as per the instructions. With both the engine
sub-assemblies and the interior all complete,
it was time to start work on the chassis, but
not before repeating the carbon fibre painting
technique over the chassis in any visible
areas. With that all done it was time to glue
the previously assembled engine and interior
onto the chassis.
Once that had all dried it was time to get
the roll cage installed, and this consisted
of several parts, so I deviated from the
instructions slightly and assembled the entire
roll cage onto the dashboard, which was
then glued into position on the chassis
floor. With the interior pretty much
complete I turned my attention to
the wheels and tyres. These were
just a matter of painting up the rims
and picking out the centre nut with
a fine tipped brush loaded with
Titanium Gold.
Once wheels were dry, on
the rubber tyres. There were
also some branding name
decals to apply here and
once set, I brushed over
a coat of matt varnish
for some added rigidity.
On first impression you
would think looking at the
box art are that painting the
bodywork would be a nightmare, with
all the unusual lines and contours present.
However, Revell has been quite ingenious
here by splicing the body into two separate

he Land Rover Series III

T succeeded its predecessor,

the Series II, in 1971.
Initially, this newer
generation vehicle was very similar to its
predecessor, but as the years went by a
number of changes were made, which
opened up the Series III to leisure users as
well as commercial use. It was available
in three body styles, a two-door off-road
vehicle, a four-door off-road vehicle and two-
door pickup. Regarding its interior design,

more advanced materials were used to boost

the safety of the vehicle as well as enhance
its appearance. The older metal dashboard
was switched out for a moulded one, and a
string of new trim options were ushered in
for the Series III. This was in a bid to make
the interior of the vehicle more comfortable.
Given that these vehicles began life in the
utility and agricultural role, the addition of
comfier interiors very much signalled plans
for the Land Rover to transition to the brand
we know today.

INSIDE THE BOX

On opening the box, you are greeted by a
large number of sprues, which contain a
very well represented one-piece body shell.
Additionally, there is a separate roof section,
and a separately moulded bonnet that can
be posed in the open position when finished

to show off the fully detailed engine bay. At

this point I would start things off by saying
‘stage one of the instructions tells you to...’,
followed by a detailed run through of the
build process. However, with this build as
you can see from the photographs it was not
going to be a normal project. Any seasoned
car modeller will know just how much detail
that goes unnoticed when building models
like this, are there is sometimes just as much
detail on the interior portions of a vehicle
model as the exterior, and it’s almost a
shame to hide the internal details like the
engine and all those wonderful interiors, that
many modern car kits have. So, with that in
mind, I wanted to find a way to showcase all
of the above, without losing the noticeably
recognisable features that the iconic Land
Rover has. I then hit upon the idea of cutting
away portions of the bodywork to show
the detail inside, and then spent a few
hours trying to figure out the best way to
remove portions of the bodywork to reveal and chose Pastel Green. Once all the parts was no going back! After a few minutes of
the interior, but still but keeping the body had been primed, I then painted the interior sawing, I had a perfectly cut the Land Rover
structurally rigid. I decided a straightforward parts to match the exterior colour. Once in half and also still had all my fingers. The
cut right down the centre was the best that had dried, I masked up certain areas separate roof and bonnet parts were also
option, so the model could be viewed with and painted those Semi-Gloss Black. The measured up and cut accordingly. I then test

fit was great.
THE ENGINE BLOCK
Firstly, I started to assemble the engine block THE BODYWORK

Although this was relatively straightforward, a little time to pluck up the courage to

Following on from that I also painted and
attached the rear differential, the leaf springs
and dampers, followed by the exhaust and
radiator, which were all painted up as per the
instructions. All of the sub-assemblies were
then brought together, and the wheels and
tyres were placed into position without glue
for the time being, just to ensure the chassis
was true and perpendicular to the road
surface and that all four wheels made contact
with the ground.

THE INTERIOR
With the chassis complete it was put aside
and work commenced on the interior.
Before you I got started on this I had
to decide on a right- or left-hand drive
as you get a choice and also have two
different types of seating. The floor
pan comes as one-piece with separate
side and rear paneling that represents
the interior trim. All this is designed
in a way that will help with painting,
and it’s at this stage I had the most
important choice to make, what colour
was I going to paint the main bodywork
in? Traditionally there are only a
handful of colours I could use to keep
the vehicle true to its history. So, chose
to paint it with the correct shade of paint
using the official Land Rover paint codes,

AUTO MILITARY AIRCRAFT FIGURES SCI-FI MARITIME 15

THE PAINTWORK
With all the hard work behind it was now
time to start applying the paintwork. So, after
coat of Halfords Grey Primer, I left the model
for a few hours and then flattened the primer
to a smooth finish. Now it was time to apply
the Pastel Green to the bodywork.
With that all complete I then gave the
entire body a coat of clear lacquer and left it to
harden for a few days. Following that I polished
it up using an automotive polishing compound.

I could now see the finish line and was eager

to see if my vision of a cutaway model had been
a success. It was time to start adding the lights,
grille roof bars and spare roof tyre. Then with
all of the main components installed, it was
time to fit the glazing to the front and back of
the model. These parts also had to be cut and
some little care was needed not to break them.
Then with glazing glued in place and the floor
pan attached to the upper portion, I painted the
cut edges red to accentuate the look. With all
those tiny parts that generally get knocked of
the model while handling glued into place and
the wheels and tyres were finally secured, the
model was complete.
Revell has really smashed this one out
the park. The overall look really does have
‘Land Rover’ written all over it. I must say I
was pleased with the outcome and taking the
extra time to modify the bodywork to enable
the interior to be exposed really worked!

CONSTRUCTION
Construction began with the rear panel of

the bogeys, two for each side along with
the rest of the wheels, including the small

bogeys are designed to be moveable, but

Before installing the cockpit into the fuselage,
you need to affix the front wheel bay to the
underside of the cockpit floor. Also, there is a
small blank section for the inner engine intake
that also needs glueing behind the cockpit
area. A little test fitting was done prior to
closing up the two halves of the fuselage,
and these were then joined using a couple
of clamps.
Moving onto the wing section, and
here the kit doesn’t offer the option of
dropped ailerons, so the wing assembly
was straightforward. The lower wing is
one-piece with the two upper sections of
the wing dropping into place. While the glue
was still drying the fuselage was then fitted
into the wings, and this had a nice positive
fit. The next thing was to install the engine
intakes, and each consists of three parts, the
outer cowling, the inner lining and the intake
surround. Again, the fit was excellent. There
were a few lumps and bumps to attach in
various places around the airframe, and there
was also the spine ‘hump’ to fix into place.

me serves two purposes, firstly it
protects the paintwork, secondly it
gives good base for the decals.

corresponding positions and I then attached
the fuel tanks along with the Sidewinders
along with the undercarriage bay doors, the

were all set in place with CA glue. I then
installed the pre-built and painted ejector
seat. The canopy was also attached at this
point using Deluxe Materials Glue n’ Glaze.
All that was left to do then was to add what
I think is the one thing that really sets this
model of a treat, and that was the kit supplied
access ladder.
As Hobby Boss kits go this was a very
enjoyable build. Granted that there might be
a few features that are lacking compared to
kits like Hasagawa or Fujimi like the option
to have dropped flaps and such. But for me
HobbyBoss really delivers in terms of value
for money, and if you are like me and you can
let a few inaccuracies go, and you are looking
for a kit that isn’t going to break the bank,
then I can’t recommend this enough.

This is a fully revised and expanded

2nd Edition of the original book first
published in 1990. This new edition has
updated general arrangement drawings,
some of which are used with permission
from Albatros Productions Ltd, where
they originally appeared in titles written
by the author. The drawings in this
book haven’t been reproduced to
scale, but that is not the purpose of this
book. The first part of the book offers
a history of the Royal Aircraft Factory,
REVELL MUSTANG
before moving on to sections covering
the airships and aircraft the company 3838 – 1:32 North American P-51D
produced. With each type having a ■ www.carerra-revell.com
section, the size of which depends on
the relative importance of the type.
The book is well illustrated throughout
with contemporary black and white
photographs of both the aircraft and the
factory. The book is rounded off with
lists of surviving airframes and engines,
as well as a separate list of replicas,
many of which have been built in the
last few years by the Vintage Aviator
Company based in New Zealand. If you
have an interest in British aircraft of the
First World War period then this book
is essential reading, and if you want to
learn more about the types covered, the
authors work with other publishers will
be well worth seeking out! My thanks to
Fonthill Media for supplying this revised
and updated title for review.

B other interests, or should I

say obsessions from an
early age, as with many of
us growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, was
the wonderful world that was Star Wars.
This is something that I have never really
grown out of and has part of my interests
from movie has been the memorabilia and
the models.
So, with the dawn of the Bandai kits being
more readably available here in the UK rather
than ordering from overseas, I have tried to
keep a few of their excellent models in my
collection. I thought I would try my hand at
one of the many kits available and attempt
a Stormtrooper. I have always had more of
an attraction to what I like to call the ‘bad
guys’ or the ‘dark side’
as they are known in
the movies and there’s
just something so
sinister about out the
Stormtrooper, I think.

These kits really

are a true dream
to build, and what
more can you ask
for and something
that helps you
relive a childhood
memory!

For anyone not familiar with these kinds

of kits, what you are presented with on
opening the box are a myriad of pre-coloured
sprues, all of which, especially the figures are
designed in a way that you don’t need to paint
anything. Bandai kits are very well known
for being a ‘snap’ or ‘push fit’ so really,
it’s just a case of cutting off the
parts from the sprue and literally
snapped fitting them together.
Firstly, you start off making the
body, arms, head and legs paying
close attention to the instructions,
as one small error can result in
you having to prise the pieces
apart and risk some damage.
Once that part is complete you
can start to add the armour, and this
is where it really starts to come
together and resemble the
character you remember.
I dare anyone not too be
transported back to their
younger selves and
pretend to make the
‘Blaster’ sound!
As with many
of these kits you
are always supplied
with extra parts to give
various poses for the hands.
For example, they can be open or
clenched to hold a pistol or a staff.
These can be assembled and kept separate
in a little bag as to not lose them for future
display purposes. The Stormtroopers staff
also needed to be assembled and is also
positionable so you can either have it the fully
extended or retracted depending how you are
displaying your figure.
That’s pretty much the build of the figure
completed! Some may just display the figure
at this point, but I decided to add that further
enhancement by adding some pin
washes to some of the areas to really
make the details pop out . I also added
a little light weathering as a personal
preference. These kits really are a true
dream to build, and what more can you ask
for and something that helps you relive a
childhood memory!

Rummaging through my

The cockpit received the most
attention, as it comes, with very little detail.
I scratch built an instrument panel and had
a spare Quinta Studio cockpit set for a 1:48
MiG-29SMT. Once that cockpit had been
painted a light grey, the Quinta set was used
for the various MFD’s and switch panels. Also,
some lead wire was used for added detail.
The cockpit cover was then fitted into place,
and black primer was sprayed on all the
components. When the primer was dry, I used
some mottling stencils from 77 Propeller, and
with some white paint, and then proceeded to
add some pre-shading.
Then, using some Hataka Light Sand, I
started to build up the colour with a number of
light coats. Finally, with some white added to
the light sand, some fading was done to give a
more weathered look. Some details were then

The Assault Amphibious Vehicle

Rebuild to Standard (AAV RAM/RS) Program
was approved in 1997. It encompassed all
AAV systems and components to return the
AAV to the original vehicle’s performance
specifications and ensure acceptable
readiness until the EFV should become
operational. The program replaced both
the AAV engine and suspension with US
Army M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV)
components modified for the AAV. Ground
clearance returned to 16 inches (40.6 cm)
and the horsepower to ton ratio increased
from 13 to 1 to its original 17 to 1. The
introduction of the BFV components and the
rebuild to standard effort was expected to
reduce maintenance costs for the expected
remaining life of the AAV through the year
2013.

as well as this there are endless tempting
special markings to add to your collection.
