FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all, this bike has been lots of
fun to work on. It holds some super

and seems carefully thought out.
The profile on this GSX-RR just
looks super cool. Watch out for the

knowing when to stop before they

model once built up that’s worthy of
anybody’s work bench. l

DECALS
Prior to making a start with
the decals I decided to put
down a barrier coat of some

a few smaller decals that
had white writing I wanted
to reduce the risk of the red

I’ve seen this done on other

had, to my eye, yellowed
slightly (it’s an older kit so
not unexpected), they were
placed in a window and left

work and they don't look too
bad against the white paint.
The one thing that did cause
issues was rather fragile
decals. They had a habit of
splitting when picked up off
the backing paper, so those
that split were patched
up as best as I could and
thankfully, overall, it's not
that noticeable.
The big question with
the decals was how did my
masking work out? It went
very well, the demarcation

TAMIYA 1:35 BRITISH SELF-PROPELLED ANTI-TANK GUN ARCHER l KIT NO.35356
BOW-HEMIAN RHAPSO
T
hough there were
plenty of tank
destroyers on the
battlefields of WW2,
none was quite as distinctive
as the Archer, the Valentine
variant that boasted a
17-Pdr gun as its main
armament. What set this
machine apart was not that
weapon, but the fact that it
was designed backwards, the
barrel of the gun pointing
towards the vehicle’s rear
end, its extended barrel
sitting neatly over the
machine’s redesigned engine
deck. This meant that the
vehicle could engage an
enemy and then, without
any need to turn around,
scoot off, ready to tackle
another foe should the
need arise. It was a bizarre
design that offered plenty of
punch in one very unusual,
though to my eyes at least,
attractive package.
Having chosen this kit,
I also decided that I would
approach the build and
especially the finishing in
a very different way. Over
the last few months I’ve
spent a lot of time watching
‘how-to’ videos from other
genres such as fantasy and
Warhammer 40K and that
has lead me to wonder if
those ideas and techniques
would transfer over into our
world. That being so, I spent
time on this model pushing
the finish to accentuate
it more, make everything
more definite and then
apply the colours in a way
that made them brighter
than normal. I wanted it
to looked less ‘weathered’
and more ‘painted’ if that
makes sense. It’s not gone
as far as I wanted it to, but
I hope that you will see that
sometimes you can shift
gears and still come up with
something exciting and
pleasing to look at!U

markings looked to be part of the finish, rather than a last-minute addition!

This set of five figures – three
British and two German –
depicts a scene from the ill-fated
'Operation Market Garden', the
1944 attempt to bypass German
forces in the Netherlands and
cross the Rhein at Arnhem.
Here, we are treated to the
scene of three British Paras
being marched and examined
by German troops. The poses
are extremely well done and
the surface detail is immaculate,
all topped off by a set of five

that can offer superior detail

superb and just right for an

THE BIG MACKS, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE MACK WHEELED PRIME MOVERS IN US ARMY SERVICE 1940-1958
DAVID DOYLE, DAVID DOYLE BOOKS
www.daviddoylebooks.com
The Mack NO series of 7½ ton, 6x6 trucks were monsters, primarily designed as tractors for
heavy artillery pieces such as the ‘Long Tom’. The prime movers featured lifting hoists and
special towing hitches to allow them to haul the artillery, and they took this role until replaced
by tracked vehicles. The Macks were produced in significant numbers for this function,
and very few were used in other ways. When we eventually get a Mack NO-2 in 1:35, it
will be an impressive model! This landscape A4 book has 120 pages packed with very
clear factory photos and a large number of in-action shots, plus some detail pictures
of preserved examples. Overall, this book is a goldmine of information for anyone
interested in this important WW2 truck and particularly for anyone wanting to make a
detailed model. The trucks remained in service until the 1960s and this book will be
vital reference material for a wide range of readers. CLS
TANKS IN THE EASTER OFFENSIVE 1972, THE VIETNAM WAR’S GREAT CONVENTIONAL CLASH
WILLIAM HIESTAND, OSPREY PUBLISHING
www.ospreypublishing.com
This new book is No.303 in the New Vanguard series from Osprey, the prolific publisher of
all things military. This latest volume, in the usual style of 50-page softback book, covers the
first and possibly only major use of armour by the North Vietnamese Army and the Easter ’72
offensive involved attacks from the Quang Tri province in the north, the Dak To area in the centre,
to the An Loc area close to Saigon. The book reveals that the NVA , more used to a guerrilla
war, struggled to organise large armoured formations, and missed many opportunities, while the
ARVN forces were better organised but sometimes withdrew too easily. The intervention of US
aircraft was often decisive, but the battles were closely matched with heavy losses on both sides.
This book describes the vehicles in use, which ranged from WW2-era T-34 and Chaffee tanks
through to more modern T-54 and M-48 types. The vehicles are illustrated in colour profiles, as
well as photos, giving the reader a clear view of the tanks and APCs used on both sides. The
numbers of vehicles and the unit organisations are described, but the most readable part is the
account of the key engagements, and the outcomes. The significant factors were often the ability
of the ARVN to out-range the NVA tanks, the use of USAF Skyraiders and increasing use of anti-
tank missiles on both sides. The quality of leadership was often a significant factor in stiffening
resistance, but the end of this brutal war was already in sight, and this fabulous little book is a
great summary of how the final stages of the war played out. CLS
Within this hefty tome’s 240+ pages, we are treated to some inspiring work from the author,
well known Barcelonian modeller Chema Cabrero; more specifically, no less than eight full-
build chapters on the Soviet/Russian ‘T’ tanks of the post-war era. We are presented with a
United Nations T-55, Ukrainian T-64, DDR T-72B ‘Dolly Parton’, T-72A with Ural turret, an Egyptian
T-54 from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, a 1994 Chechnyan T-80BV, a Syrian T-72AV and a T-72B
Ulan Ude 5th Independent Tank Brigade. Supplementing this extraordinary body of work are
colour illustrations by Pablo Patricio Albornoz, tank crew figures by Daniel Rivas Galindo and
photo-references by TMMI and MIM mags’ very own Zack Sex. The models are self-contained
articles in themselves, covering superdetailing, painting, weathering and, impressively, a vignette
presentation for each tank. Chema’s modelling work is superb and this book will give the reader
some useful insight into modern-era ex-Soviet and Russian main battle tanks in miniature. TMMI
The Messerschmitt Bf109 is, of course, an iconic Luftwaffe fighter aircraft of the Second World
War and in its better know ‘Emil’, ‘Friedrich’ and ‘Gustav’ incarnations it battled with Allied
fighters in the skies over Europe, Africa and the Soviet Union. Perhaps less well known is the
Bf109T ‘Toni’ variant, in reality the ‘T’ more prosaically denoting ‘Träger’ or ‘carrier’, the navalised
version of the fighter that was destined for the ill-fated Graf Zeppelin aircraft carrier. And it had
a convoluted history. In 1941, seventy examples of the Bf109T were constructed, but when the
carrier project was cancelled they were given to the Luftwaffe which deployed them in Norway.
Later however, the plan to complete the Graf Zeppelin was renewed and the Bf109Ts were recalled
from Norway and converted back to the carrier version. The final cancellation of the Kriegsmarine’s
Graf Zeppelin at the start of 1943 saw the aircraft repurposed yet again, this time to Jasta Helgoland
(Heligoland, an island in the middle of the German Bight) and given a new lease of life. Finally, a
the end of ‘43 the Bf109Ts were once again taken to Norway, finally being withdrawn from front-line
service in 1944 and the remaining aircraft transferred to training units. This magnificent new, 362-page
book from Francis L Marshall traces the Bf109T’s entire chronology, offering the reader an extremely
thorough and engaging read. For the modeller there is plenty; masses of wartime photographs (500)
of the aircraft, their crews and their Allied enemies, plus maps, sixteen colour illustrations, scale
drawings and more, completing this extraordinary production. Highly recommended. TMMI
