PURPOSE
This standard defines the apparatus to be used and the test methods to be followed to determine the
resistance to combustion of the non-metallic materials used inside the passenger compartment which
must conform to Federal Standard 302 and International Standard ISO 3795.
PRINTED COPY IS TO BE DEEMED AS UNCHECKED; THEREFORE THE UPDATED COPY MUST BE CHECKED THE APPROPRIATE WEB SITE
The standard is aimed at determining the resistance to combustion of the non-metallic materials used
inside the passenger compartment in agreement with the international standards Fed. Std. 302 and
ISO 3795.
The international standardisation is based on the principle that the greater the resistance to
combustion of the materials used, the lower the risk of a fire developing.
The evaluation of the inflammability is based on the determination of the speed of horizontal
combustion of a test sample exposed to a small flame for a certain period of time.
The speed of combustion is defined a the ratio between the distance burned and the time necessary
for the flame to cover this distance.
The standard is applied to materials and elements covering the inside of the passenger compartments
individually or in combination up to a thickness of 13 mm. The use of samples with a thickness of over
13 mm constitutes a violation in all cases.

TESTING
For materials with plush or furry surfaces, position the samples on a Test tech. [ ]
level surface and comb them twice against the lay of the hairs.
Secure each sample between the two U frames so that the side [H2] Test tech. [ ]
exposed to the flame is level with the open part of the frames and that
the exposed face faces downwards.
Light the burner and adjust the flame keeping the air inlet closed so that Test tech. [ ]
the constant height of 38 mm is reached; allow it tot stabilise for 1 to 3
minutes.
Introduce the sample carrier in the cabinet so that the centre of the Test tech. [ ]
edge of the free end of the sample is 19 mm above the centre of the
nozzle of the burner.
Leave to burn for 15 seconds, switching off the burner immediately Test tech. [ ]
afterwards.
Begin timing when the flame reaches the first reference (notch or pin)
located 38 mm from the free end of the sample.
If the flame goes out before reaching the reference mark, the material
must be classified fire resistant or self-extinguishing on the basis if the
specifications given in the “ Data processing” module.
Stop timing when the flame reaches the other notch or pin located at Test tech. [ ]
254 mm from the first; if the flame does not reach this point, time its
advance until it goes out.
With a test sample of < 356 mm in length, the time employed by the
flame to travel its entire length must be taken.

On the basis of the results of the test, the material can be classified in the following categories:
• Self-extinguishing [H4]

HELP 1
COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The combustion chamber (see fig. 1) is a cabinet preferably made of stainless steel, with the
dimensions indicated in fig. 2.
The front part is fitted with a window which may cover the entire surface and may be used as an
access door.
The base of the chamber is fitted with ventilation holes and on the upper part air hoses are present.
The side walls have to openings in them, one to introduce the sample carriers and the other, on the
other side, for the gas pipe and the burner ignition. Any melted material is collected in a tray in the
base of the chamber so that it does not block the ventilation hoses (see fig. 3).
Four feet 10 mm in height raise the cabinet above the support surface.
Figure 1
EXTRACTION HOOD
The combustion chamber must be located inside a hood which is closed on all four sides and fitted
with an aspirator with an air suction speed, measures 100 mm above and below the area occupied by
the sample-carrier support, of 0.10to0.30 m/s.
The hood must have an internal volume of 20 to 110 times that of the combustion chamber.
COMB
The comb to be used must be metal, with a length of at least 110 mm and have seven or eight teeth
with rounded points spaced every 25 mm.
HELP 2
DEFINITION OF TEST MATERIALS
The exposed side of a sample is the surface of the material which is in direct contact with the
passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Simple material is that composed of a single layer which is macroscopically homogeneous in
thickness. Simple materials are therefore textiles or plastic composites (e.g. bare Woodstock).
If the material being tested is composed of different layers which can easily be separated this is
termed simple overlaid material and must therefore be tested separately.
Composite material is composed of many layers of material joined across the whole contact surface
by bonding, gluing, winding or welding etc.
When the assembly is uneven (for example belts, welding points, riveting etc.) which enable single
samples to be taken, the material cannot be considered composite and must be regarded as being
overlaying of simple materials.
An isotropic material has the same physical-mechanical properties whatever the direction of the
materials.
An anisotropic material has a structure oriented in preferential directions which condition the
physical properties (e.g. weft-warm textiles, laminates etc.). For material with a flame propagation rate
which differ depending on the direction examined, the sample must be obtained in order to measure
the greatest speed of combustion.
The presence of directional effects on the speed of combustion is measured by carrying out
preliminary tests.
Some materials with age, tend to increase their speed of combustion due tot the environment with
which they are in contact; the specific standards, unless otherwise specified, may specify a speed of
combustion of the material conditioned to:
• aged after 100 hrs of Fade – Ometer (resistance to light) in accordance with Standard LP.7M005
• aged after 100 hrs in an oven at 80 ± 2 °C
• aged in CTUS (Static damp heat chamber) for 100 hrs. at 40 °C and 80 % R.H.

identify the layers of the material.
Fire resistant
The material only burns in the area in contact with the flame from the burner and, when the flame is
extinguished, combustion does not continue.
Self-extinguishing
When the flame from the burner is extinguished, combustion proceeds but propagates only in the area
adjacent to that touched by the flame and does not reach the first reference mark located 38 mm from
the end of the sample.
