Changes
The following changes have been made to TL 52132: 2019-12:
a) Section 3.5 „Re-lubrication“ revised
b) Appendix „Material release list“ deleted
c) Standard edited

1 Scope
This standard defines the requirements for lubricants for threaded fasteners.
Surface protection types with lubricants as per Technical Supply Specification TL 52132 are listed
in Volkswagen standard VW 13750.
TL 52502 applies to aluminum threaded fasteners.

2 Designation
Lubricant as per TL 52132

3 Requirements

3.1 General requirements

Approval of first supply and changes as per Volkswagen standard VW 01155.
Chemical safety evaluation as per VW 50156.
Material conformity as per Volkswagen standard VW 91101.

Always use the latest version of this standard.

This electronically generated standard is authentic and valid without signature. A comma is used as the decimal sign. Page 1 of 3

TL 52132: 2021-11

If a fastener with a surface protection described in a specific TL is used and this fastener is coated
with lubricant as per TL 52132, the coefficients of friction required by the TL describing the surface
protection must be adhered to.
For all fasteners without additional surface coating or with a surface protection that is not described
via a TL in VW 13750 and that use a lubricant coating as per TL 52132, the coefficients of friction
required as per VW 01129 apply.
Parts coated with a lubricant as per this TL must meet the S3 cleanliness requirements as per
VW 01134, if applicable.
The properties of the products differ and must be tested for the respective use case with respect to
the coefficients of friction to be achieved. Particular influences such as fastening speeds or mating
surfaces at the threaded connection points must be considered.
For examination purposes (Yes/No statement), the coating must contain an ultraviolet (UV) inhibi-
tor as an indicator.
For Ofl-t615 as per TL 245, a green color (color similar to RAL 6000) must be used.

3.2 Class
Water-dispersed synthetic polymers that yield a touch-dry lubricant film/lubricant layer after appli-
cation and drying and do not contain hazardous substances. The coating agent must be silicone-
free.

3.3 Requirements for the lubricant application process

It must be ensured that no residues of chromic acid, chromic solutions, or other acid residues can
enter into the lubricant coating bath.
In order to avoid the risk of condensation, the parts must be packaged dry and only after reaching
ambient (room) temperature.
Check the efficiency of the lubricant coating with respect to the coefficients of friction of the threa-
ded elements in coordination with the receiving plant.
NOTE : If threaded fasteners that have already been coated with lubricant are coated once again,
this can yield different coefficients of friction than for the first coating.

3.4 Notes on the lubricant application process

The chosen process must guarantee reliable and even wetting of the surface with lubricant. Prior to
application of the lubricant, the parts to be coated must be dry and slightly heated (object temper-
ature approx. 40 °C to 50 °C, not exceeding 75 °C). The temperature of the coating agent must not
fall below 20 °C during coating (optimum: 25 °C to 35 °C, not exceeding 45 °C).
The coating agent is usually supplied as a concentrate. The mixing ratio of coating agent concen-
trate and, preferably, demineralized water must be chosen in such a way as to achieve and main-
tain the desired coefficients of friction over the overall layer structure.
The bath concentration must be checked by determining the dry residue or using a refractometer,
and documented.
The bath (pH value) must be checked based on the specifications of the coating agent manufactur-
er (frequency: at least once per shift/day, taking into account the specified limits).
Coated threaded parts are preferably dried in a tunnel-type system, but a centrifugal system is also
possible. Drying must be performed at a speed suited to the parts spectrum and with the

application of heat. The precise setting parameters (rotational speed, temperature, filling quantity)
must be determined and documented by the coating company in collaboration with the coating
agent manufacturer. The maximum permissible temperature for the coating system must be ob-
served, e.g., max. 90 °C for Cr(VI)-free passivation treatments.

3.5 Re-lubrication
The reason for re-lubrication may be threaded fasteners that cannot be (reliably) coated. Rework-
ing of improperly lubricated parts that do not achieve the required coefficients of friction as per
VW 01129 for the respective use case is permissible with a release based on the respective use
case (deviation permit).
The parts to be coated must be free of oil and grease, and the solvent must be evaporated before
further processing. Cleanliness, avoidance of contaminants, uniform wetting, and effectiveness of
the lubricant coating must also be observed. The processes of pre-heating and drying are omitted
in this procedure.
The release based on the respective use case is mandatory because the commonly used re-lubri-
cation solutions (sprays) may contain hazardous substances (propellants) as well as substances
impairing paint wetting ability. The respective safety data sheet by the European Community must
be considered.
