Remarks: 1. In principle, the tolerance shall be used for cold-rolled steel sheets with a width of 500 mm
min.
2. For specially required steels such as shims or steels with a width of less than 500 mm,
special tolerances can be determined by agreement between the concerned parties.
3. The tolerance shall not be used for abnormal areas of the coil.
4. Tolerance of thickness for steel types with “Q” shown in Table 8 shall be controlled so that
the lower tolerance is more strict (tolerance shown in Table 8 - nominal thickness × 0.02),
and upper tolerance (tolerance shown in Table 8 + nominal thickness × 0.02) is within the
upper limits. Therefore, total tolerance range for steel types with Q is the same as that of
steel types without Q.

ANNEX
Points of partial revision in March 2009
Based on the revision of Standard of Japan Iron and Steel Federation, “Cold rolled steel sheet and strips for
automobiles” (JFS A2001) in April 2008, the mechanical characteristics (YP, TS, EL) were revised according
to JFS standard. In addition, the SP125 that was small use amount and was quested for abolition by Stan-
dard of Japan Iron and Steel Federation was tentatively standardized and the new adoption was prohibited.

Points of partial revision in March 2006

Description of “Materials specified in this NES must conform to NES M0301 “Substance Use Restrictions””
was added at the beginning of the text.
Normative Reference NES M0301-2005-1

Purpose of revision in July 2005

Additional establishment of the cold rolled low carbon steel sheets grade (SP128) for a limited time only
along with a request to stop the manufacture of the thin hot rolled low carbon steel sheets.
Reduction of the steel type whose productivity is low is requested by each company with blast furnaces in
Japan to improve the recent condition of a lack of steel sheets. The thin hot rolled steel sheets have been
studied as a subject of reduction because their productivity is especially low and it is also difficult to obtain
them abroad. The grade of the cold rolled low carbon steel sheets having the range of mechanical charac-
teristics (TS, YP, EL) equivalent to SP221, which is proposed by JFE Steel, is additionally established this
time for a limited time only. Sheet thickness was limited to less than 1.6 mm in consideration of cost. Char-
acteristic value comparison of RP/SP221, 222 and SP128 is shown below for reference.

Tentative standardization of current NES standard steel type
Partial steel types of current NES steel types are decided as “tentative standard”, and use from the initial
setting phase in development is limited from the viewpoint of reduction of steel types and cost. The steel
types that are subjects for study at the moment are as follows.

Cold rolled steel sheet GA steel sheet

M 2020 SP124 (Tentative standardization) M 2027 SP784 (Tentative standardization)
SP125 (Under study) SP785 (Under study)
M 2032 SP131-340 (Tentative standardization) SP781-340 (Tentative standardization)
SP132-340 (Tentative standardization) SP782-340 (Tentative standardization)
SP135-340 (Tentative standardization)

- 10 -
M2020 [2009-N]
The reasons for tentative standardization are as follows.
Steel sheet tentatively standardized Reason
SP124 - They are standardized for only Nissan.
SP784 - Reduction of the grade to SP123, SP783 or SP122, SP782 is be-
ing conducted by utilizing high-lubrication antirust oil (L), inorganic
lubricating film (J) from the viewpoint of cost reduction. Therefore,
the use amount is expected to be reduced further in the future.
SP131-340, SP781-340, - There is hardly an actual result of usage.
SP132-340, SP782-340 (SP131-370 and SP132-370 are applied from the viewpoint of
characteristic values.)
SP135-340 - Adoption is only for service parts at the moment.
- Although this was conventionally adopted for T/LID OTR, herein-
after GA material (SP785-340) is used for the part, therefore the
use amount is expected to be reduced further.

Purpose of revision in April 2001

0.95 mm and 1.1 mm were added as standard thickness for the purpose of thickness optimization of body
parts.

Purpose of revision in May 2000

(1) The hardness test for which the tension test was able to be substituted was abolished.
(2) The lower limit of r value for SP121 and SP122 were abolished according to actual values of manufactur-
ing and actual results of delivery.
(3) The single-side designation classification of the strictness application surface is notated for the order
code by newly setting the symbol of “U” in strict appearance materials.

Purpose of revision in March 2000

The following items were reviewed at the same time along with transition of the SI 3rd phase.
(1) Deletion of conventional units (SI 3rd phase; description of only SI)
(2) Revision of classification by usage and classification by appearance
(3) Addition of high lubricating rust preventive oil (L) to classification by oil application
(4) Addition of classification (Q) by sheet thickness control to classification by dimension

Supplementary explanation about revised items

(1) Regarding deletion of conventional units
The conventional units that were described with the SI units in this Standard as reference were deleted
because description of the unit system was changed from “description of conventional units with SI units
as reference” to “description of SI units only” along with transition of the SI 3rd phase.

(2) Revision of classification by usage and classification by appearance

For “classification by usage” whose necessity conventionally decreased because of standardization of
appearance strictness, the name and concept were newly defined from the viewpoint of cost reduction,
and symbols for “classification by usage” and “classification by appearance” were revised at the same
time. Revision contents are as follows.
System Name and symbol Concept
Before revision After revision
Classification by usage Outer panel use (A) For surface defect control (G) This is the classification for the
Inner panel use (B) For general (no symbol) degree of the content of surface
defect based on classification by
appearance.
Classification by Strict (G) Strict (A) This is the classification for the
appearance Normal Normal existence of assurance of mate-
(No symbol) (Cold rolled base sheet: B) rial surface quality (scratches,
(Hot rolled base sheet: no etc.). Appearance strictness
symbol) covers even minute surface de-
fects, but appearance normality
does not cover them. However,
surface defects that cause
cracks in processing were out-
side of the standard regardless
of this classification.
Recently, it became difficult to classify part names and desired surface quality by using names of outer pan

els (generally, parts whose name includes outer) and inner panels along with diversification of vehicle struc-
tures. This Standard was decided to be matched to the standard of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation and
also unified as NES Standard in this revision.
However, a change was made because it was judged that “A” and “B” were optimum compared with the ex-
istence of “G” according to the past practice between symbols to be used and surface quality to be desired.
In addition, it was decided that for symbols used in classification by usage newly defined at this time, “G” was
carried over in order to minimize the scale of a system change, and for normal materials of classification by
appearance, cold rolled base sheets were defined as “B” and hot rolled base sheets were defined as “without
symbol”.

(3) Addition of high-lubrication antirust oil (L) to classification by lubricant

Specification of high lubricating rust- preventive oil (L) was added from the viewpoint of cost reduction.

(4) Addition of classification (Q) by sheet thickness control to classification by dimension

The specification of “Q” in which sheet thickness tolerance of the lower limit side was strict was added to
the classification by sheet thickness control from the viewpoint of optimum design.
Ex. SP121Q 1.00 x 800 x C oil
→ Sheet thickness of the lower limit is 0.93 and sheet thickness of the upper limit is 1.07 according to sheet thickness tolerance
corresponding to pertinent sheet thickness and sheet width in Table 8.
As thinner side tolerance of thickness becomes strict, it is tolerance – 0.05 (based on the formula described in remarks of Table 8)

Purpose of revision in 1997

This Standard was considerably reviewed by the revision in 1995. However, the following items were re-
viewed in this revision.
(1) Regular adoption of SP124 whose standard is tentative
(2) Revision of the allowable range of mechanical properties corresponding to revision of the standard of the
Japan Iron and Steel Federation
(3) Standardization of strict surfaces
(4) Standardization of aging characteristics

Supplementary explanation regarding revised items

(1) Regarding SP124
In the previous revision (1995), the tentative standard of SP124 was specified about the material having
formability superior to that of SP123 and was decided not to be newly adopted anymore. However, this
standard was decided to be regularly specified because the standard of the Japan Iron and Steel Federa-
tion was issued and the steel type equivalent to SP124 was regularly specified and materials till SP123
are easy to be restricted in styling and design and competitiveness may be reduced.
<Points to be noted>
1) The purpose of use shall be a measure for the request from styling section.
2) The materials shall not be used on models for overseas production as much as possible in consideration
of the ability of local procurement.

(2) Review of test values of mechanical properties

The standard range of total elongation of the mechanical property is 10%, and narrowing the range was
the big problem. Along with the decision of to narrow the range of the standard of the Japan Iron and
Steel Federation, NES was also decided to be changed this time.

(3) Regarding classification by strict appearance
Prescription of the strict appearance was added at this time (D, G) because there was no prescription in
the previous revision. The concept of classification by usage and classification by surface defect is as
follows.
Classification by usage Classification for the portions of inner or outer panels of the body for which
the materials are used. Therefore, this classification does not guarantee sur-
faces.
Classification by appearance Classification for the existence of assurance for surface quality (scratches,
etc.) of materials. Although the subject of the strict appearance also includes
fine defects of the surface, the normal appearance does not include them.
However, surface defects causing cracks in processing become out of the
standard in spite of this classification.
Although the necessity of the classification by usage was reduced due to standardization of the strict ap-
pearance, the classification was decided to be left in this revision because it was not possible to conclude
that the classification was unnecessary.

(4) Standardization of aging characteristics

The aging characteristic was incorporated because there was no description about the aging characteris-
tic of each steel type in the previous revision.

Supplementary explanation regarding each item

Item 3 Classification of mechanical properties (including prescription of mechanical properties)
1. Regarding “Target value”
(1) Change of name
Although the “target value” was established as the manufacturing target of mechanical character-
istic values of materials so far, the implication faded along with narrowing the range of mechani-
cal characteristic values in the standard of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. However, it was
decided to be left by changing the name to “Reference target value” in this revision because there
was implication as the guideline for selection of steel types at this moment.
(2) Change of target value
Conventionally, there was a difference of 1% between NES and the standard of the Japan Iron
and steel Federation (NES was higher by 1%). NES was decided to match with the standard of
the Iron and Steel Federation along with this revision of the standard of the Iron and Steel Fed-
eration.
