An Excerpt from The Tell Tale Heart

by Edgar Allan Poe

“...How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how
healthily — how calmly, I can tell you the whole story.

It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my

brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.
Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved
the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given
me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his
eye! Yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a
vulture — a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it
fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees — very
gradually — I made up my mind to take the life of the old
man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.”
I Had A Bad Day
John: Hi, Mary…
Mary: Hey, John! You look down. How was your day yesterday?
John: Honestly, it was terrible.
L A T E Mary: Oh no, what happened?
John: Here’s why. First, I woke up late, so I missed my breakfast.
Mary: That's not a good start to the day. Did you have time for
lunch at least?
John: No, I didn’t. I forgot my lunch money, so I had to skip lunch too.
Mary: That was rough. Did anything else go wrong?
John: Yeah, on top of all that, I did not realize that I dropped my
HUNGRY phone on the train on my way to school. I was so sleepy all day.
Mary: Oh dear! Did you manage to find it?
John: Yes, I did. I found it before I went back home.
Mary: Where did you find it?
John: When I arrived at the station, I hurriedly asked one of the
attendants. He helped me. Luckily, it was at the ‘Lost and Found’.
Mary: That’s great! Well, I hope today will be better for you.
John: Yeah, fingers crossed!
Hellen Keller lived quite an extraordinary
life. When she was two years old, she had a
serious fever. It made her deaf and blind.
Because she could not hear or see, it was almost
impossible for her to communicate. When she was
seven years old, her parents hired Annie Sullivan
to teach Helen. Although it was difficult at first,
Sullivan finally taught Helen to communicate with
sign language. This achievement opened a new
world to Keller. When Helen was 20 years old, she
began taking college courses. After her
graduation, she wrote 13 books and traveled
around the world to talk about her life. Helen
Keller was an amazing person. Hellen Keller
