Roommate Roulette

Congratulations! It’s time to move out on your own and your life depends on the luck of the draw. You will
draw out your monthly rental allowance. You will also be drawing out a conflict scenario that you must
solve.

Living away from home is the first step in the launching phase of the family life cycle and one where
tons of emotions are at play. You’re probably feeling stressed out, hopeful, responsible, and most
importantly INDEPENDENT! But remember, living away from home can be frustrating and difficult so
pretend this project is REAL LIFE. You are very likely to experience some if not all of these stresses in the
future.

You will have enough time on this project and you will need to share the classroom materials and work
together responsibly. If you do not use your time wisely YOU WILL NOT FINISH!

THIS PROJECT IS DUE:

1. Housing Options: Use a computer to search for housing options. The amount
you are allotted for monthly rent is __1800_____. (luck of the draw) Don’t
forget you and your roommate are sharing the responsibilities so you should
discuss who is going to pay for what and how much. When you find your
apartment/house/townhome, please include a description of the home including
cost, description, floor plan, and a picture if available.

Be sure to:
-Include your wishlist
-Type of structure
-Why you chose the type of house/pictures
2. House Rules: Once your find your house or apartment, come up with at LEAST
10 house rules. These rules should not include chores – there is a separate section
for that. List the rules on the attached sheet. They should be detailed and cover
all possibilities.

3. Cleaning Schedule/Chore Chart: Brainstorm some chores below then

prepare a cleaning schedule for you and your roommate on the attached sheet.
Keep in mind that chores should be distributed equitably and there should be a
variety of chores included. You will need to make a daily, weekly, monthly, and
seasonally chore list and who is responsible.

4. Conflict Management: Use the conflict that you drew out of the envelope and
the attached worksheet to solve the conflict together as roommates. Moving out is
not an option. You are STUCK with each other so compromise!

5. Furnishing an Apartment on a Budget: You can’t have an apartment

without a bed! Luckily, Roommate 1 has been gifted 1,000 from that rich uncle
and Roommate 2 just got $500 on their tax return. You need to spend that
$1,500 to buy the essentials for your new space (and maybe some extras). Choose
how you want to split costs for the shared spaces.

6. Elements and Principles of Design: As a team you will submit 3 total design
collages. You will work together to create one for a shared space (living room,
kitchen, or dining room). You will then each create one for your individual
bedrooms. You may NOT use a picture of a room already put together. You must
show how you would select various items, fabrics, furniture, fixtures, and finishes
to create a harmonious space. The more detailed and professional the appearance
of these design collages, the better.

Be sure to:
1. Choose and create a Focal Point (area of interest)
2. Implement a color scheme
3. Include both 3 functional and 3 decorative accessories

3. Compare the rentals above. Which is the best

decision?
The second one has so much more that you can do, and
it just looks cooler, plus it has closer schools if we have
kids and a nice neighborhood.

4. Who is going to pay for what? How much? Why?

I am, as roommate 1, going to pay $900.

E. Furnishing an Apartment
You have finally gotten your first apartment on your own! To help you get started, your
parents have given you your bedroom furniture, but you have to come up with
everything else on your own. Luckily, that rich relative that we all wish that we had, has
heard that you’re just starting out and has gifted you $1,000 to furnish your new place.
And don’t forget that $500 tax return your roommate got! You can use that too for a
total of $1,500 to spend.
Looking through used furniture sources like Craigslist, Facebook, or other online stores
like IKEA or Target, show me what you would do with your money. Keep in mind that a
used item of good quality may be a better buy than a new item that will quickly fall apart.
Also, keep shipping costs in mind if you’re ordering from an online retailer that doesn’t
have a local store where you could pick up the item. Shipping costs must be included in
your totals

At a minimum, you must have:

-Couch

- Bath Towels

- Kitchen Towels

- Pots and pans

- Bedding

- 4 Cups

- Enough dishes for 4

- Silverware for 4

- Dining table that seats 2-4 people

- Either a desk or a coffee table (can do both if you wish)

These are the basics! Think hard about what other items might be useful and/or
necessary while living on your own.

- Small appliances?
- Bathroom items?
- Electronics?
- Decor?

Your total must be within $10 of $1,500. Put together a presentation on Google Slides
and share it with me. Each slide must have a screen shot of purchased items that
includes the price of the item. You can use as many slides as you need to. Make sure
the first slide has both your names on items.

Reflection Questions: Done on your own

1) Which item(s) that you purchased were your favorite?

Probably the stuffed dinos.

2) Which items(s) are you willing to spend more money on?

I think that we spent a good amount on the necessities

3) Which item(s) are you willing to buy cheaply and not concern yourself with the quality?

Most items, honestly, I don't need really good stuff I just need to get by.

4) Which item(s) surprised you at how much they cost?

I was surprised that the towels were that cheap.

5) How did you resolve one roommate having $1000 and the other $500?

Its Our money we spent it together
