HOME IMPROVEMENTS

4 Arranging for somebody to do something for you

When you don’t have the skill or experience to fix or improve something in your home, you need to
arrange for a professional to do it for you. Study the box below.

We use the structure have something done when we arrange for somebody to do something for us:
The walls were very dirty so I had them painted.
My washing machine is working again. I managed to have it fixed.

In informal English, we can also use get instead of have.

The walls were very dirty so I got them painted.

5 Moving in

Complete the text below using the structure ‘have something done’:

We’ve just bought a new house. The location is perfect, but now we
need to make a lot of improvements before we can move in. Firstly, the walls are pretty
dirty so we definitely need to have them painted (paint/them). Next, we need to
2
(check/the pipes) because the walls are quite damp and I think
there might be a leak somewhere. The old door handles also need to be replaced with new
ones, but I think we can do that ourselves.
Another thing we want to do is completely remodel the kitchen – we’re thinking of putting
3
in new kitchen cabinets and we want to (install/a new cooker).
4
I think we’ll also need to (repair/the door) as it’s in pretty bad
condition.
Another thing to think about is the heat. It gets really hot in the summer so we will
5
definitely need to (install/air conditioning). That’s going to be
quite expensive but I think it’s necessary.
6
Finally, the carpets must go! We’re going to (remove/them) and
replaced with wooden floors. They’ll look much nicer!

What are some home improvements you would like to make at the place where you live? Would you
do them yourself, or have them done by a professional? Explain your reasons.
