On the face of It

The play "On the Face of It" explores the theme of loneliness and
mental pain experienced by individuals with physical impairments.
Derry, who has a half-burnt face, enters Lamb's Garden and is
surprised to find Lamb there. Derry is used to people avoiding him
and calling him names because of his appearance. However, Lamb
does not show any interest in Derry's face and instead draws his
attention to his own tin leg, which he lost in the war. Lamb lives alone
in a house without curtains and embraces the world around him. He
loves reading, picking crab apples, and making toffees for children.
Lamb advises Derry to focus on others who are in pain and worse off
than him, and to avoid bitterness and hatred. Derry is impressed by
Lamb's positive attitude and promises to come back to visit him.
Despite his mother's objections, Derry goes to see Lamb again and
finds him lying on the grass after falling from a ladder. Through Lamb,
Derry learns to discover beauty and lead a happy life.
