Course Code: MAT120, Title: Calculus and Analytical Geometry I
Submission Due: 25 March 2024

1. Determine the domain and range of the following functions.

i. f ( x)  x 2  4
1
ii. g ( x) 
( x  1)( x  2.5)( x  3)( x  3.5)

2. An open box is to be made from a 6-inch by 16-inch piece of cardboard by cutting out squares of
equal size from the four corners and bending up the sides, as shown in the following figure. Let V
be the volume of the box that results when the squares have sides of length x. Write a formula for
V as a function of x and find the domain of V.

3. Sketch the graph of the following equations by translating and reflecting the graph of y  x
and y  x ,

i. y  3 x  4
ii. y  4 x 3

4. Evaluate the inverse of the functions, f ( x)  5

4x  1

5. Find formulas for f ◦g and g◦f , and state the domains of the compositions.
6. Solve the equations without using a calculating utility. Use the natural logarithm anywhere that
logarithms are needed.
i. e x  2 xe x  0
ii. 3e 2 x  5

7. Evaluate the following limits.

t 3  t 2  5t  3
i. lim
t 1 t 3  3t  2
2  3x  5 x 2
ii. lim
x  1  8x2

8. Find values of x, if any, at which f is not continuous.

f(x) = (2x + 1)/(4x2 + 4x + 5)

9. Check the continuity of the function f given by f(x) = 4x -3 at x = 2.

10. Determine whether the function is continuous on the interval [-5, 5].
f ( x)  (25  x 2 )
