The Artistry of Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson is a photographer whose work has been outstanding. Crewdson was

born in 1962 in Brooklyn (Özbek 6). He earned his Master's in Fine Arts from Yale University

and his Bachelor's in Fine Arts from the school of design at Rhodes. His work has been

recognized both locally and globally and most of his collections are on display in various

museums like the Guggenheim Museum (Özbek 7). He is recognized for his use of both natural

and artificial light to produce elegantly staged shots about the American lifestyle (Shaygan et al.

26). He skillfully uses light in his photography to create a sixth sense of apprehension. Crewdson

managed to create a sense of suspense in one of his most famous photographs titled “Untitled

Twilight.” He set it up at dusk, with his source of light being the street lights (Shaygan et al. 27).

The light from the lamps radiated long shadows to the other side of the street.

Crewdson has won many awards and received an exclusive membership in the American

Academy of Art. Crewdson’s mastery use of light in his photography is exemplary. He often

uses backlights, and chiaroscuro and strategically places artificial lights to create pure artistry in

his work. He essentially uses light to stow bizarre atmospheres in his photography to create

surrealistic quality. To capture all preeminent details in large photographs, Crewdson primarily

uses his camera which is capable of capturing a large format view of up to 4×5 inches (Özbek 9).

To achieve the desired lighting effects in his photography, Crewdson uses a blend of artificial

light and flashlights.

Crewdson is commonly known as a typical fine arts photographer who specializes in

splendidly staged large-scale photographs of the American lifestyle (Shaygan et al. 26). In his

work, he often blurs the lines between fiction and reality, creating narratives that viewers have to

interpret. I like Crewdson’s ability to creatively use light to storytelling in his artistic work. His

photography crafts scenes that meticulously draw viewers and always elicit a horizon of fieriness

and narratives. I specifically admire his use of light to create a sense of mystery and suspense

that adds depth to his work. If interested to know more about Gregory Crewdson, you can gain
