I.

Nguyen Du
1. Brief personal information
 Date of birth: 3/1/1766
 Hometown: Tien Dien village, Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province.
 Nguyen Du is an outstanding humanitarian poet with a deep and tolerant heart. At the
same time, he used his pen to criticize reality strongly and sharply.
2. Life and career
 Nguyen Du came from a noble family and served as a mandarin for many generations
under the reign of King Le and Lord Trinh. It is a family with a tradition of loving
literature and art.
 Nguyen Du's childhood was spent in luxury. He followed his father to study at Quoc Tu
Giam
 The violent events of the times and of the family threw the life of the young mandarin
Nguyen Du out into the storm of life, pushing him into a life of hardship.
 In 2013 he was recognized by the General Conference’s 37th session in Paris as a cultural
world-honored figure.
 Nguyen Du holds the following positions in turn:
 Year 1803: Arrived at Nam Quan gate to receive envoys from Qing Dynasty, China.
 In 1805: promoted to the rank of Eastern Academician.
 In 1807: became an examiner at the Huong Exam School in Hai Duong.
 In 1809: became the Governor of Quang Binh Palace.
 In 1813: promoted to Can Chanh Dien scholar and held the position of Chief Envoy to
China.
 After returning from the mission in 1814, he was promoted to the Ministry of Rites.
3. Influence
 Nguyen Du lived as an ordinary person in the world and thanks to that, he deeply
sympathized with all lives of tormented people. Nguyen Du looks at life with the eyes of
a person standing in the midst of life's storms, and that makes his work contain a depth
unprecedented in medieval Vietnamese literature.
 Nguyen Du left behind a huge literary legacy with outstanding works, in every genre he
achieved perfection at the classical level.
 For example: The Tale of Kieu, Thanh Hien from the beginning to the end, Nam Trung
Hoa Dao, Ten years of wind and dust, The phoenix emerges from the sky.
 His most famous work, the Tale of Kieu is filled with the pains of human life and the
desire for happiness, freedom and justice, while denouncing the atrocity of the regime.
The story is viewed as the pinnacle of Vietnamese literature because of its humanity and
the perfect beauty of its language.
 Nguyen Du's compositions are the crystallization of the nation's achievements in Chinese
and Nom, synthesizing the quintessence of many literary genres to compose. Nguyen Du
has made great contributions in bringing the Vietnamese literary language to a skillful,
classic level.

II. Pham Nhat Vuong


1. Brief personal information
 Date of birth: 5/8/1968
 Original homeland: Loc Ha, Ha Tinh
 Place of birth and upbringing: HaNoi
 He is an entrepreneur, the founder of Vingroup and has been the richest VietNamese for
over a decade.
2. Life and career
 In 1993, after the Soviet Union disintegrated with many implications and new
opportunities, Vuong began his business career in Moscow before moving to Ukraine,
where he opened a restaurant and established Technocom company in Kharkov.
 From 1993 to 1999, as the director, Vuong turned this small company into a strong group
with the popular brand of Mivina
 After spreading the influence of the Technocom brand throughout Europe through food
products, Vuong decided to invest in his homeland - Vietnam. Since 2000, Vuong’s
Vingroup has participated in the high-end tourism and real estate market with two
strategic brands of Vinpearl and Vincom. These brands have gained quick success with a
series of prestigious projects
 Since 2010, Vuong has been living in Vietnam to focus his effort in the domestic market
through the development of large estate projects.
III. Tran Phu
1. Brief personal information
 Date of birth: May 1, 1904,
 Hometown: An Thổ, Tuy An, Phú Yên (today An Dân, Tuy An District, Phú Yên
Province)
 Trần Phú was a Vietnamese revolutionary and the first general secretary of the
Indochinese Communist Party, later renamed the Communist Party of Vietnam.
2. Life and career
 In 1926, he went to Canton (Guangzhou), China, to arrange the merger of his
organization with the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth League. In 1928, he attended the
sixth session of Communist International. On 11 October 1929, the court of Nam triều in
Nghệ An conducted the trial in absentia of some members of the Indochinese Communist
Party; Trần Phú was one of those accused
 In April 1930, he came back to Vietnam and joined the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of Vietnam. He was given the work of editing Theses on the bourgeois
revolution of civil rights.
 On 19 April 1931, he was arrested by the French. He died on 6 September 1931 due to
torture by the French.
3. Influence, ideology
 Comrade Tran Phu upheld a shining example of absolute loyalty to the Party and
revolution, of indomitable spirit to the enemy.
 Many resolutions and documents on building revolutionary mass organizations such as
the Agrarian Society, the Women's Union, the Red Salvation Society, etc. has been
drafted and approved by Comrade Tran Phu and the Party Central Committee, making an
important contribution to improving the quality of Party building and revolutionary
organizations in the early years of our Party's establishment.

IV. The 10 girls at Dong Loc Junction


Dong Loc Intersection is a historical site closely associated with the sacrifice of 10 young female
soldiers from the People's Army of Vietnam during the Vietnam War in a US Air Force bombing
raid. These 10 young women, aging 17-24, belonged to squad 4, Unit 552

 The squad leader: Vo Thi Tan - 22 years old
 The squad deputy: Ho Thi Cuc - 21 years old.
 8 soldiers including:
 Nguyen Thi Nho - 19 years old
 Tran Thi Rang - 19 years old
 Vo Thi Hoi - 20 years old
 Duong Thi Xuan - 19 years old
 Vo Thi Tan - 22 years old - squad leader
 Ha Thi Xanh - 18 years old
 Nguyen Thi Xuan - 20 years old
 Vo Thi Ha - 19 years old
 Tran Thi Huong - 17 years old
 At 4:30 PM on 24/7/1968, the 15th bomb of the day hit Dong Loc. One bomb landed near
the entrance of the shelter where the 10 girls of Squad 4, Unit 552, were taking cover. All
the sisters sacrificed themselves at the ages of eighteen, twenty, and still unmarried.
 On June 7, 1972, the contemporary Vietnam’s President awarded the 10 girls the title of
Labor Hero to commemorate their sacrifice . Dong Loc Junction has also been
recognized as a National Historical Site.
 Today, the tomb of the 10 female soldiers of Squad 4 has been elegantly constructed,
