STANDARD NOMENCLATURE

If people who read and write for the Bulletin are to understand each
other, they must all use the same notation, or difficulties will arise. This
problem was discussed at the Business Meeting. Every scientific publication
has its own style and its own system of abbreviations, and every science tries
to standardize its nomenclature to avoid confusion.
A · standard nomenclature will now be required for all reports published
in the Bulletin in regard to structural analysis, positions, and game moves.
The nomenclature to be used in second and third order structural an-
alysis is shown in the diagram below, which is self-explanatory. Starting
with P0 A 0 and C at birth, the individual progresses to P1 A 1 and C 1 to
comple te the Child ego•state. He then moves on to P2 A2 and C2; The var-
ious subdivisions of these are explained in the legend.

MP Mother Parent
FP Father Parent
FP pp = Parent in the Parent
AP Adult in the Parent
CP = Child in the Parent
All parts of P2

PC = Parent in the Child (P1 ) The "electrode"

AC = Adult in the Child (A, ) The "Professor"
CC = Child in the Child (C1 ) The "infant"

C2 P0 , a
, C = State at birth

For intermediata states, P1 a , P1 b , P1 c , etc.

STANDARD STRUCTURAL NOMENCLATURE

In regard to positions, a logical sequence rather than one based on clini-

cal theory is preferable, because not everyone might agree on the same
theory. The nomenclature and sequence w_hich should be used in all reports
submitted to the Bulletin is as follows:
(a) Pronouns should be capitalized, and contractions used. E.g.,
"I'm," "You're."
(b) The following notation should be used for predicates: "OK,"
"not-OK." (Note hyphen in not-OK).
111
(c) The positions should be numbered or named as follows:
1. or the First Position. "I'm OK, You're OK."
2. or the Second or Projective Position. "I'm OK , You're not-OK. "
3. or the Third or Introjective Position. "I'm not-OK, you're OK."
4. or the Fourth or Futility Position. "I'm not-OK, You're not-OK. "
In regard to games, the term "game" will not be acceptable unless the
transactional sequence is really a game and not merely a pastime, an opera-
tion or a maneuver.
In regard to scripts, our knowledge of this subject is still in such a fluid
state that it is not possible to construct a standard nomenclature at present.
All of this nomenclature is subject to change if it can be demonstrated
to the Editor through discussion or correspondence that there is a better RQH
for the purpose in hand, which is mutual understanding of terminology be-
tween members of the ITAA and other readers of the Bulletin.

TAB BACK ISSUES

In response to a great number of requests for back issues of the
TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS BULLETIN , the ITAA is making these
available. The original issues ( 1962 through 1968) have been microfilmed
and photocopies have been made from this film.
One volume is published each year, beginning with Volume 1 in 1962.
Each , volume contains four numbers: January, April, July, October. Back
issues from 1962 through 1968 are not available individually, but only by
volume. Individual copies of 1969 issues, however, are still in stock. A list
