SURGICAL RETRACTOR SYSTEM AND
CLIP-ON JOINT CLAMP
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
‘The present invention rolates to retractor systems used
during surgical procedures.
‘During surgical procedures, a surgeon typically makes an
incision in a patient to access a site of interest for the
particular surgical procedure. To maintain clear access to the
site of interest, a surgical retractor system is typically
utilized. A surgical reactor system typically inchndes a rail
lamp, frame connected tothe ral clamp by joint clamp,
and retractor blades that are connected to the frame by
‘ditional joint clamps. The rail clamp is commonly secured
to. operating table and provides fixed and study support
forthe frame and the retractor blades. Each of the compo-
nents in atypical surgical retractor system is conventionally
‘mal of stainless stel. Other materials soch as aluminum
ang titanium have also been wsed

to closely mate withthe frustoconical recess 326 in the upper
surface of the ciele clamp 300. As shown, the washer 370,
‘may further include a cam bolt hole tht extends through the
planar upper surface and the frustoconical lower suriae,
‘The cam bolt hole may have a diameter greater than a
diameter of the cam bolt 610 so as to permit passage ofthe
‘eam bolt 610 through the washer 370,
A second washer 380 may be positioned between the first
washer 37 and the cam head S10 ofthe cam lever $00, The
second washer 380 may have a generally eylindrical-shape

circle clamp 300 and tighten a grip oa the object passing
through the clamping passage 390. In particular, the clamp
ing force may move the upper portion 320 and the lower
portion 340 toward one another, thus reducing a circumfer-
fence or diameter ofthe clamping passage 390 and constrct-
ing the area within clamping passage 390,
‘A third washer 382 may be positioned in the gap 350,
between the loser surface of the upper portion 320 and the
‘upper surface of the lower portion 340, The washer 352 may

through the planar upper surfice and the planar lower
surface. The cam bolt hole may havea diameter greater than
‘adiameter of the cam bolt 610 to permit passage through the
‘washer 32. The washer 352 may prevent the clamping force
from reducing the gap 380 beyond the thickness of the
‘washer 352. In this manner, the washer 382 may operate as
‘8 governor so to prevent an application of an excessive
ripping force that could potentislly damage the object
passing through the elamping passage 390 andlor cirele
clamp 300.
As shovin in FIGS. 446, the joint clamp 100 may further
include a bushing 400 betwoen the scissors clamp 200 and
the citele clamp 300. In particular, the bushing 400 may
include a frustoconical upper surface 410, a frustoconical
lower surface 420, and a cam bolt hole 480. The upper
surface 410 may be configured to engage the ress 346 in
the lower potion 340 ofthe circle clamp 300. Similarly, the
lower surface 420 may be configured to engage a recess ofUS 11,633,180 B2

‘vray though the bushing 400 and may have a diameter
sreterthan diameter ofthe cam bot 610 to permit passage
‘ofthe cam bolt 610 through the bushing 400. longitadinal
‘axis ofthe bushing 400 may bo coaial wih the loogitinal
axis ofthe cam bolt 610 andthe longitudinal axis of the ear
bolt hole 430.
The cam lever $00 may include a cam head $10 and a
hhandle $30 connect to the cam head $10. The cam head
10 may be couples an upper end 612 ofthe eam Bolt 610
‘ia pivot pia 08 tat passes trough pvr holes S12 the
«am head 510 and a pivot hole 614 in an upper end 612 of
the cam bolt 610. In panicular, the cam head S10 may
include two side members $16, 818 that for an interposed
chanel cootigured to receive the upper end 612 ofthe cam
bolt 610. Each side member 816, 818 may include a pivot
hoe S12 thats coaialy aligned with the corresponding
pivot hole 812 ofthe other side member $16, §18. The cam
pin $08 may passes trough pivot holes $12 in the side
‘member $16, $18 and a pivot hole 614 in an upper end 612
‘ofthe eam bolt 610, hus coupling the cam bolt assembly
G0 to the cam lever 600,
