“Brain Drain” Not yet terrified

By : Ferisman Tindaon

Some time ago, this daily opinion article discussed the internationalization of higher
education. Internationalization is also one of the reasons that allows the movement of
educated and trained workers between countries. Primarily the movement of professional
workers from one country to another to obtain a better life. Migration of educated workers is
indeed a new phenomenon, complex, difficult to stop and commonly called 'brain drain"

Brain drain is defined as the departure of trained and educated experts from one country to
another. This has long been a serious concern of our government. Moreover, AFTA and
MEA (Asean Economic Community 2015) have come into effect and opened.

Many are worried that Indonesia will be flooded with foreign workers (expatriates), while
other thoughts exist. We will actually experience a loss of professional workers (rain drain).
Or both can occur at once.

Brain drain, meaning that scientists, educated and professional workers from their own
country, from the economic sector, or from one field move to another sector, usually for
income and a better life. In the context of a state, this means the migration of workers abroad
and then spreading throughout the world. This condition is of course very undesirable for the
country concerned because the important human resources we have actually advance other
countries, not their country of origin.

Still remember, in the 1970s, this country was an oil producing country In that period until
now, of course there are many educated, trained and skilled workers professionals produced.
There are even some that are specifically sent to and from schools overseas. The question
arises, now economic activities and drilling activities and Petroleum mining has experienced
a drastic decline. So where does it go?educated experts? Even though some have reached
retirement age or maybe it's old.

Another story for example. In 1976, the Nurtanio Aircraft Industry (IPTN) was established in
Bandung and it was developed until we were able to export CESSNA aircraft abroad. Then
IPTN was restructured and changed its name to PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) in 2000). Of
course also over such a long period of time. Many workers have been educated and trained
for the needs of developing the aircraft industry. So where does this trained workforce go
after aircraft industry activity declines? You can imagine that at that time (read: 2000),
around 16,000 PT Dirgantara Indonesia workers were laid off.
