Egg-cellent Fractions
We count eggs in groups of one dozen. One dozen eggs = 12 eggs. This means we can evenly
divide eggs into groups. A fraction would tell someone how many eggs you have out of the
total dozen. When we use fractions, we use the total number of groups as the bottom
number, or the denominator. The top number, or the amount of those groups you have, is
the top number, or the numerator.

? numerator

12 denominator

Practice the concept: Color in some of the eggs, not all. Write the number you colored
in into the empty box. Then, read the fraction correctly! To read fractions we use
ordinal numbers for the denominator. For example: I have 3/12ths of a dozen eggs.

Drawing Bar Graphs
The table below will allow you to enter your data for a bar graph . Once you have entered
the data, draw your graph. Depending how many eggs you find, you may need to label the
vertical side with a skip counting quantity like 2s or 5s. Title your graph across the bottom
and draw the color of each egg under the column for that type of egg.

Create a Pie Chart
A pie chart (or circle chart) is a graph where a circle is divided into
sectors that each represent a portion of the whole.
Follow the instructions to create a pie chart to show the types of
eggs you found on your scavenger hunt.

The Whole: How many eggs total did you find?

How many different colors of eggs did you find?

Percentages
Determine the percentage of the whole for each color of egg you collected.
Formula: # of one species divided by the whole x 100 = percent %

E.g. 5 eggs out of 20 eggs total is 5 divided by 20 x 100 = 25%

Degrees
Determine the degrees out of 360 that each type of egg will take up on the pie chart.

Formula: # of one species divided by the whole x 360 = degrees of the pie chart

E.g. 5 eggs out of 20 eggs total is 5 divided by 20 x 360 = 90°

Use the formulas and your data to fill out the following chart.
