PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WOMEN IN THE FIRST STAGE OF LABOR

Several conditions can occur in mothers in labor, especially in mothers

giving birth for the first time, as follows:
• Feelings of anxiety Fear and doubt about the birth that will be faced
• Worried about whether labor is going normally
• Can the birth attendant be patient in helping her?
• Is the baby normal or not?
• Is she able to care for her baby?

Psychological changes in stage I are influenced by:

o Previous experience
o Preparation for childbirth (physical, mental, material, etc.)
o Environment
o Coping mechanisms
o Attitude towards pregnancy
BACK COURSE TOPIC 04

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WOMEN IN THE SECOND STAGE OF LABOR

1. Uncomfortable feeling. When giving birth, the mother feels pain due to
uterine contractions that are getting stronger and more frequent.
2. Sweating and heartburn also cause discomfort. The body is always
hot, because during childbirth the mother's metabolism increases, heart
rate increases, pulse, temperature and breathing increase.
3. the mother sweats more, as a result the mother feels tired and
dehydrated. Impatient, so that the harmony between mother and fetus is
disturbed. This is caused by the pain felt because the fetus has entered
the birth canal and the contractions are becoming more frequent and
stronger so that the mother can't wait to give birth immediately.
4. Tired. The effect that can occur on the mother due to pushing is
exhaustion, the mother feels tired because the pressure to push is very
strong.
5. Distress. The mother feels distressed with discomfort in the spine
because the fetus is passing through the birth canal.
6. Panic. The mother will panic if the fetus does not come out immediately
and is afraid that the labor will take a long time.
BACK COURSE TOPIC 04

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WOMEN IN THE THIRD STAGE OF LABOR

1. Happy because the moment that has been waiting for a long
time has finally come, namely the birth of the baby and the
mother feels happy because she feels she has become a
perfect woman (able to give birth, give offspring to her husband
and happy because she can see her child).
2. Anxious and afraid that there will be danger to her during
childbirth because childbirth is considered a state between life
and death. Anxiety and fear because of previous experiences,
anxiety and fear about the next birthing procedure.
BACK COURSE TOPIC 04

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WOMEN IN THE FOURTH STAGE OF LABOR

1. Honeymoon Phase. The Honeymoon Phase is the phase when
a child is born, where there is prolonged intimacy and contact
between mother – father – child. Each cares for the other's child
and creates new relationships.
2. Bounding Attachment or bond of love. Occurs in the fourth
stage, where it is held between mother-father-child, and remains
in a loving relationship, the husband's participation in the birthing
process is an effort to process this bond of love.
3. Early Postpartum Phase. Taking, Holding, and Letting Go
Phases.
BACK COURSE TOPIC 08

Unit Summary
Childbirth is a natural process, where the cervix dilates, the baby
is born, and the placenta emerges from the mother's womb. A number
of physiological and psychological changes occur in the mother during
the birth process. It is important for midwives to understand these
changes in order to interpret the signs and symptoms of normal and
abnormal labor.

A number of normal psychological changes can be seen clinically with

the aim of being able to accurately and quickly interpret certain signs
and symptoms and be able to assess whether they are normal or not
at any time.
