CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

The literature review for the research on “Innovations in Poultry Healthcare Products: A Case Study on Poshak
Medicines Pvt Ltd” involves a comprehensive analysis of published information in the field of poultry
healthcare innovations.

1) Innovation in managing health of broiler, breeders and broiler progeny by John Brake (2015):
John Brake explores paradigms and paradoxes in the poultry industry, notably the dilemma of
stimulating immunity versus feed-efficient growth with antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). The
discussion emphasises the need to strategically manage gastrointestinal tract (GIT) function in broiler
breeders and progeny without compromising immunity. A paradigm related to feed particle size is
identified. While pelleting aims for feed sanitation and increased intake efficiency, an oversight arises
from ignoring the avian species’ evolved stomach compartments. Cloacal contamination emerges as a
critical concern linked to broiler health issues. Theorised factors include feed particle size, dietary
elements, and acid-base balance.

2) How improving animal welfare standards can benefit poultry industry and consumers by Michael
Appleby (2018): In contemplating the future of poultry farming, a multitude of factors must be
weighed, encompassing local and global dimensions. Among these factors, animal welfare emerges as a
pivotal consideration, influencing the industry, consumers, and the well-being of the birds themselves.
Achieving sustainability, often deemed humanity’s primary challenge, demands a delicate balance
between environmental, economic, and ethical aspects. While environmental and economic
considerations have traditionally taken precedence, ethical aspects, encompassing both human and
animal welfare, are integral for policy acceptability and applicability. In the context of egg and poultry
meat production, the trinity of environmental, economic, and ethical factors directs attention towards

8
BM310.3 - EXECUTIVE TRAINING PROJECT REPORT – PART 2 2024
animal management and welfare. Scientific research in this domain addresses pressing issues such as
bone breakage, injurious pecking, breast blisters, and foot pad dermatitis. The outcome of this research
has led to shifts in policies and standards adopted by producers, retailers, national governments, and
intergovernmental organisations.

3) Impact of genetic diversity of IBV on vaccine selection and efficacy by J.J De Wit (2016):
Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) poses a significant threat to chickens, impacting respiratory, renal, and
reproductive systems with economic and welfare implications. Effective control of IBV necessitates

vaccination in both broilers and laying birds, given the virus’s ability to infect chickens of all ages and
types. IBV presents a challenge due to its diverse variants, outnumbering available vaccines in the field.

Homologous vaccines, when appropriately applied, offer high protection levels, but cross-protection by
heterologous vaccines varies widely. Combining different vaccines can enhance cross-protection,
providing a more comprehensive defence against various field strains. For vaccine producers,
understanding the prevalent strains aids in selecting the most effective combination to induce broad
cross-protection against relevant field strains.

4) Infectious bronchitis: hatchery vaccination strategy against emerging against IBV variants by
Roberto Soares (2019): Infectious Bronchitis (IB) is caused by a chicken coronavirus, a member of the
family Coronaviruses. The virus, known as Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), is enveloped and carries a
single-stranded RNA genome. Its highly contagious nature allows for horizontal transmission through
aerosol inhalation, ingestion of feces, or consumption of contaminated feed or water. IBV can persist in
birds and feces for extended periods. The disease primarily manifests in the respiratory tract, replicating
in epithelial cells, but also affects various other epithelial cells, including those in the intestines,
kidneys, and oviducts. One notable characteristic of IBV is its capacity to mutate, leading to the
generation of multiple antigenic variants. This mutability poses challenges for disease control and
vaccine development. The ongoing mutations contribute to the complexity of managing and preventing
Infectious Bronchitis in poultry flocks.

5) Nanotechnology innovations for increasing the productivity of poultry and the prospective of nano
biosensors by Nima Komeli (2023): Nanotechnology emerges as an innovative and promising
technology with extensive applications and socioeconomic potential in the poultry industry.
Nanoparticles (NPs) offer advantages such as high absorption, increased bioavailability, and more
effective delivery to target tissues compared to bulk particles. Diverse nano materials with varying

9
BM310.3 - EXECUTIVE TRAINING PROJECT REPORT – PART 2 2024
forms, sizes, shapes, applications, surface modifications, charges, and natures are available.
Nanoparticles play a crucial role in medicine delivery, allowing targeted delivery to specific sites in the
body, thereby reducing toxicity and side effects. The review article explores different mechanisms
through which nanoparticles exert their actions. Despite the vast benefits, concerns about the safety and
potential hazardous effects of nanoparticles in poultry production should be acknowledged. The focus of
the review is on the types, manufacture, mechanisms of action, and applications of nanoparticles,
addressing both their positive impacts and potential risks in the context of poultry farming.

6) New technologies and products for livestock and poultry bone processing by Min Zhang (2024):
Livestock and poultry bones, often by-products of meat processing and slaughter, are valuable reservoirs
of highly nutritious natural substances. However, technological limitations have impeded their optimal
utilisation. Recognising their nutritional richness, it becomes essential to identify and explore effective
processing technologies for these bone resources. This pursuit aims to address the escalating demands of
the food industry, unlocking the potential of livestock and poultry bones as valuable and sustainable
sources of nutrition.

7) Enhancing innovative ideas implementation: a study of Finland’s poultry industry by Eric Kolog
(2017): This study delves into the factors influencing the successful implementation of innovative ideas
in Finland’s poultry industry, with a primary focus on chicken production. Conducted as qualitative
research, the study utilised interviews and surveys to gather comprehensive insights from 79 individual
respondents, including employees from a case company and academia. Key findings suggest that the

influencing the successful implementation of innovative ideas in Finland’s poultry industry, focusing
predominantly on chicken production. Employing qualitative research methods, including interviews
and surveys, data was gathered from 79 individual respondents, comprising employees from a case
company and academia. Key findings reveal that the innovation implementation process is akin,
10
BM310.3 - EXECUTIVE TRAINING PROJECT REPORT – PART 2 2024
regardless of the idea’s origin, be it from internal research or an external source. This suggests a linkage
to established innovation process model theories. Successful integration of innovative ideas hinges on
alignment with regulations, especially in animal welfare and the environment. The study underscores the
significance of extensive collaboration and partnerships in streamlining the industry’s implementation
processes.

9) Improving the quality and safety of eggs by Jesus Arango (2014): The focus on enhancing both the
quality and safety of eggs in breeding companies, particularly those producing egg-laying hens, has
intensified. Recent innovations and technological advancements have significantly contributed to
achieving this goal. Precision in measurements is now crucial for making objective assessments of egg
quality and safety. From a genetic standpoint, animals are selectively bred to possess the potential for
producing eggs with superior external and internal quality.

10) Optimising poultry production through advanced monitoring and control systems by Shai
George (2023): Poultry farming, a significant global industry producing over 120 million tons of
various poultry meats annually, faces challenges related to animal welfare, environmental impact, and
economic sustainability due to its intensive nature. This paper explores the potential of advanced
monitoring and control systems to address these challenges. Current practices involve basic regulation
of environmental conditions, feeding, and health monitoring, leading to inconsistencies in growing
