INSTRUCTIONS
Exam time: 4 hours.
Answer all grammar questions on this exam paper and NOT on the sheets of paper provided.
Only write your essay on the sheets of paper provided!
Write clearly (legibly) on every second line, using formal English (for the essay).
Write your Anonymous ID number and course code on the top left-hand side of each sheet of paper handed
in.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR TEXTS CAREFULLY FOR SPELLING ERRORS AND MISSED-OUT WORDS
ETC.

The exam has three parts:

1. Spot the error (15 sentences)
2. Spot the error with Error Correction and Feedback (5 sentences)
3. Writing a formal essay (U-V)

Part 1 15p.
Your task is to find what is incorrect in each sentence (it could be for instance spelling, punctuation,
grammar, vocabulary etc) and provide the correct form/word. There is one error in each sentence.
You get 1 point for identifying an error and supplying the right form (where the latter is required). However, if
you mark something that is already correct, regardless of whether what you suggest instead is correct or not,
you get 1 minus point (but you can never get less than zero for each sentence).

Part 2 14 p.
Your task is to find what is incorrect in each sentence (could be for instance spelling, punctuation,
grammar, vocabulary etc.) and provide the correct form/word/answer. You will get 1 point for
identifying the error and for providing the correct solution.
Here, you need also to explain the error in each sentence pedagogically (steered towards your
students/pupils). You will get 1 point for a suitable pedagogical explanation.

Part 3
Your task is to write an argumentative essay of approximately 350-400 words. It is assessed based on content,
organisation and linguistic level.

PASSMARKS MAX 29P.

In order to pass the exam all three parts need to be completed with a pass.

The pass mark for a G is 60% correct answers in part 1 and 2 and a G on the essay. =17p

For a VG you will need 80 % in part 1 and 2 and a VG on the essay. =23 p.
Part 1 Spot the Error
Each of the following sentences (numbers 1, 2, 3 etc.) contains ONE error. Your task is to find what is
incorrect in each sentence cross it out (could be for instance spelling, punctuation, grammar,
vocabulary etc) and provide the correct one.
You get 1 point for identifying an error and supplying the right form (where the latter is required).
However, if you mark something that is already correct, regardless of whether what you suggest
instead is correct or not, you get a minus score (but you can never get less than zero for each
sentence). This means you must be careful not to correct things you are not certain of, as you will
then perhaps lose points – better safe than sorry, so to speak.

Part 2 Spot the Error with Error Correction and Feedback

Your task is to find what is incorrect in each sentence (could be for instance spelling, punctuation,
grammar, vocabulary etc.) and provide the correct form/word/answer. You will get 1 point for
identifying the error and providing the correct one (minus if wrong). There are approximately 5-10
errors all in all.
You also need to explain the error in each sentence pedagogically (steered towards either Middle
School (4-6), Secondary School (7-9) or Upper Secondary). You will get 1 point for a suitable
pedagogical explanation.

The language level of the pupil receiving your explanations:_________________________

1. Since writing is important to me, I am really frustrated that I am having so much problems

(many problems/much difficulty) with an essay like this. (2)

The explanation:
A suitable explanation must incorporate grammatical components/terminology and examples
steered towards the chosen level. If, for instance, the level chosen is 7-9, it means that students
are not equipped with a full range of grammatical terminology, in Sweden. Instead, they will
benefit from having an explanation without too many difficult grammar words and with lots of
examples. 7-9 should know basic grammar such as nouns, verbs etc. but they are unfamiliar with
terminology such as pre-modifiers, auxiliary verbs, gerund etc. On a higher level (Upper secondary)
students should know more grammar but will still require explanations without too many
grammar components and still examples should be used.

2. I am getting used too reading books in English, with or without dictionary. (4)

3. These news may not come as a surprise to us, but the reasons has now been proved
scientifically for
the first time. (4)
