Punctuation marks are symbols
that are used to aid the clarity and
comprehension of written
language.
 Use a period at the end of a declarative
sentence and in abbreviations.
PERIOD

Use a question mark after an

QUESTION MARK interrogative sentence .
 Use quotation marks for direct
quotations .
QUOTATION MARKS

Use a comma to separate items in a

series to set off an appositive, or before
COMMA the conjunction in a compound sentence.
Pause between parts in a sentence.
 Use hyphen to join words serving as a
single adjective before a noun, in number
HYPHEN words, and to divide words into syllables.

Use an exclamation point to show strong

EXCLAMATION POINT emotion or to give a command.
 Use a colon to introduce a list and before
a final clause that explains something in
the sentence.
COLON

It is a punctuation mark ( ’ ) used to

APOSTROPHE indicate either possession.
 Use parentheses around extra non-
essential information that is too
important to omit. Two marks used to
enclose words.
PARANTHESES

Use a semicolon to join two independent

clauses that are no connected that a
coordinate conjunction.

 Punctuation marks are symbols that help
interpret and define expressions in a text;
they facilitate reading and help to
understand the direction of words.

 The purpose of the punctuation marks is

that the ideas expressed contain structure
and an order that distinguishes the main
ideas from the secondary ones without
losing their relationship.
A written message from
one person to another,
usually put in an envelope
and sent by post.
