Reading Response: Hemstrom & Anders

The research community that I participate in is the hospitality industry, specifically theme

parks. Most of the time it is through online articles, but researchers working on a specific project

might only share information amongst themselves and not release it to the public until they are

done. One commonly asked question in this industry concerns the challenges companies face in

the industrial hospitality sector. Other questions include how celebrations or holidays affect the

economic state of hospitality and how to prevent the spread of viruses amongst customers. The

genre, or type of information people in the community post, would include raw data, reports,

rating websites, and articles. There are a variety of genres available to the community.

I think there are multiple genres researchers in the hospitality industry use to share

information with others. Multiple genres also mean multiple formats. A report would not be

organized the same way as data or a rating. A report would be written like an essay whereas data

would be in a chart or table and a rating would be with a score and brief reasoning why it

deserved that score. Some terminology frequently used are accommodations, attrition,

benchmarking, banquet event order (BEO), cost per occupied room (CPOR), Day guests, and

many more. I would say Robert Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, and Mark Woodbury,

CEO of Universal Parks & Resorts are the top people in my research community. They are

experts because they are the Chief Executive Officers of two very popular theme park

companies. Guest satisfaction, innovation, and adaptability would be very important parts of the

community’s everyday culture. There are many components to consider when looking at a

specific research community from ways of communication, sharing of information, and members

within.
