Answer the following questions about evaluations, a specific form of opinion:

1) Share TWO examples of situations in which you changed your initial evaluation from positive to

negative or vice versa. Explain how this occurred.

2) Explain, in your own words, why it is challenging for us to make fair evaluations.

Part 1:

My first situation happened after the university entrance, when I was signed up in the major

Finance Administrator of Banking Academy, collaborating to City University of Seattle. At first, I think

collaborating program like this did not have a good quality and students in this major would receive

such a high grades easily just because they have to pay a higher tuition fee, compared to the other

majors. However, since I actually studied here, my evaluation has completely changed. The program

is really created by both university with the necessary knowledge base for students, the lecturers are

professions in their subject, and the infrastructure is deserved to student’s tuition fee. And the largest

surprise to me here is that student would not receive the high grade because of the tuition fee, but by

the try they used to study. All examination and results are graded fairly, without bias. At the end, I

completely satisfy with the educational quality here, and, if someone asked me for the suggestion

about studying finance, this program was absolutely one of my first recommendations.

My second situation is also about study, and particularly is the IELTS certificate. In the

beginning, I think that 6.5 IELTS is really hard and individuals who want to achieve it have to master

the English’s grammar. However, when I actually started studying IELTS, I realized that evaluation is

not true. IELTS is just a language test for your English skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

As a result, the priority of studying for this certificate is not mastering the grammar like the traditional

method of Viet Nam, but how to practice English in the real life thoroughly. After four months of

studying hardly and try to practice as much as possible, I got the 7.0 IELTS. In the end, I do believe

that 6.5 IELTS is not as hard as how I used to think in the past.

Part 2:

In my opinions, there are so many reasons lead to our unfair evaluations. These justifications

might come from the opinions from surrounded people like our families or friends, from the influence

of nation or religion traditional belief, or even from our personal bias (which is the result of or previous

experience). Because of having accessed to these factors for such a long time, we tend to make an
unconscious assumption for something from the beginning, which leads to the unfair evaluation. In

addition, believing in rumors takes shorter time than doing a research about one issue. That is

also the reason why we tend to use evaluation from other people, instead of confirming information by

ourselves and making a fair evaluation.
