Application software can be classified into the several major types. Describe any TWO (2)
types of application software by giving its type, purpose and example.

A general-purpose software application is software which has been designed to solve user's
common or general tasks using a computer system. Examples include
 Word processor programs
 Spreadsheet programs
 Presentation graphics programs
 Database management systems (DBMS)
 Browser
 Communication software
Specialized Applications is software that more narrowly focused on specific disciplines and
occupations, for examples: -
 Graphics Programs
 Video Game Design Software
 Web Authoring Programs
 Artificial Intelligence
 Virtual Reality
 Other Specialized Applications
Mobile Applications or Mobile Apps is Add-on programs or software for a variety of mobile
devices such as Smartphones or tablets. Example applications: -

b) Describe the following terms:

i) Cloud Computing

Cloud computing uses the Internet and the web to shift many computer activities
from a user’s computer to computers on the Internet. Rather than relying solely on
their computer, users can now use the Internet to connect to the cloud and access
more powerful computers, software, and storage.

Shifts computing activities from users’ computers to computers on the Internet


Frees end-users from owning, maintaining, and storing software programs and
data
Three basic components:
 Clients (end-users)
 Service providers
 The Internet

ii) Internet of Things (IoT)


The Internet of Things (IoT) is the continuing development of the Internet that
allows everyday objects embedded with electronic devices to send and receive
data over the Internet. It promises to connect all types of devices, from computers
to cell phones, to watches, to any number of everyday devices. These everyday
objects include cell phones, wearable devices, and even coffeemakers. For
example, the Fitbit is a bracelet that monitors health data and sends that data to
your cell phone or personal web page. Uses Web 3.0 Applications

QUESTION 1

Computer addiction occurs when the computer consumes someone’s entire social life.
Discuss any THREE (3) common symptoms of people suffering from computer addiction and
explain how to prevent it.

Symptoms: -
 Craves computer time
 Overjoyed when at the computer
 Unable to stop computer activity
 Irritable when not at the computer
 Neglects family and friends
 Problems at work or school
 Any relevant issues

Prevention: -
 Limit your time on the computer (no more than 1.5 - 2 hours daily, with the exception
of weekends).
 Only use the computer for necessary tasks
 Place the computer in a common site in the home, like the living room.
 Get social support and promote social activities.
 Encourage interests like sports, reading, or the cinema.
 Create a plan for modifying your behaviour
 Seeking treatment by counselling or join support group
 Any relevant suggestion
